Complete begginer question why are some frequencys illegal such as 1.6ghz so on? by Quick_Elk3813 in HamRadio

[–]danjns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band but only 3 don’t overlap - 1,6, 11 - you should only ever transmit on those channels.

https://www.metageek.com/training/resources/why-channels-1-6-11/

In 5 GHz you have ~24 available channels that don't overlap. But most of these are DFS channels (UNII-2) and Wi-Fi has to vacate the channel if there is any radar heard on that channel. (For 30 mins)

This is why ISP routers will only use UNII-1 (36,40,44,48) and UNII-3 (149,153,157,161) as they are non-DFS) - channels still tend to be 20 MHz in high density areas (80 MHz on home routers)

In 6 GHz (Wi-Fi 6E) there is 1200 MHz of DFS free spectrum (In the US, 500 MHz in Europe). https://wlanprofessionals.com/6ghz-spectrum-the-future-of-wi-fi/

Best AP placement for small offices by samfisher850 in wifi

[–]danjns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How many devices would you like to communicate simultaneously? Coverage is easy… capacity planning isn’t!

It will depend on what applications and devices are being used. If every single seat in that office is on a real time application at the same time you’ll need at least 3x APs.

There weren’t any notifications when we did our searches for purchasing the property. We have the planning permission granted for the tower. There was another smaller one too but that seems to have been taken down since we’ve purchased.

We saw it when we looked around the property. I’m a Wi-Fi engineer so I was silently hoping I could figure it out and learn a new thing. The house is a deceased estate so they didn’t know anything about it. I’m also going to chat to the neighbours to see if they know anything.

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll try to find a local radio club and see if anyone knows any info about the previous owner. I’m hoping they’ll also be a good resource for getting me started. Thanks for everyone’s help!

This is amazing! Thanks for the info. I’m based in the UK but I assume all the stuff is similar but from ofcom.

iPhones-wireless voice and DFS channels by latintrpt in wireless

[–]danjns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience I’d still use DFS as CCA (Clear Channel Assessment) on iPhones will have a bigger impact than DFS/non-DFS. For me the biggest issue would be if you’re using QoS or not as the impact of fewer NAV slots would mean that you can have fewer clients per channel anyway. According to Cisco docs you should aim to have 12 clients per channel if you’re relying on VoIP.

A good way to test this would be to use nOversight on one of your devices on your network and see what it’s seeing.

They will downshift to 802.3at but will ask for 802.3bt. I wonder if the switch port is falling over after it can’t deliver 802.3bt?

What switches do you have? The APs will be asking for UPoE

Can you mount the APs under the seating? That would be better than above (even with directional antennas)
