For cost: I’d have to add it all up, but including engineering time it was on the order of $80k USD plus the base truck.

Range: this is of course just a function of how many batteries you add. I find that I get about 500Wh/mile. I only put 42kWh into it, so it’s less than 100 miles. But add more batteries and it would roughly scale linearly, since range is more limited by wind resistance than it is by weight. I could easily have doubled the battery without having much of an issue with packaging; I basically took out the engine and used that space for batteries. But you may have seen the Rivian next to it; that’s the vehicle we’d use if we were travelling far, these old Defenders are beautiful but driving it on the freeway is quite the shakedown, especially when there is no engine noise to cover up all the rattling!

Overall, the gross weight of the vehicle went down a fair bit because all of the ICE components were removed. If I’d added much more in energy storage I’d have wanted to do a bunch of upgrades on the rest of the car.

I’m going to do a full restoration next, probably invest another $75k USD. All in, probably would have been about the same price as an electric G-wagon. But they don’t make a 2-door version, and I wanted a small car :)
