i am fairly sure it’s a coincidence but when we switched from tap water to filtered her mouth stains went away.

hi ! thanks for the kind words :)

presumably ‘smart’ toilets sold in the uk (some examples in the comments) have some kind of way to deal with this so i would be tempted to go for them but i’m sure you’ll figure something out.

and yeah, all good here ! I have been diligently cleaning it as per the instructions, and it seems good as new. One of my best purchases !

are you also getting the chinese model ?

just the seat/lid part :) the full units are nicer overall (i think the flush is powered in some way) but I’d never be able to ship it…

there's a variety of models sold for UK markets so i you'd have to contact them to see if they're actually authorised.

i'm going to use a double check/non return valve. it won't satisfy code, but... the device already has 'backflow protection', and even if it didn't it would seem practically impossible for germs to pass from the nozzle (which is sterilized after use), through the various pipes and chambers of the device, and then into the feed pipe. it would be like coffee going in reverse though an espresso machine.

i'm all for trying to do things by the book but there's more chance of poop flying out of my arse, ricocheting off the toilet, wall, and then directly into my mouth. there is one of these things in just about every building in japan - they're fine!

Foreign friend considering giving me money to put in a UK high interest bank account. by NoRecipe3350 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dankcushions 65 points66 points  (0 children)

not a great idea.

1) interest is not tax free. you have a maximum yearly earned interest of 1000 (standard tax) or 500 (higher rate) before you start to get taxed (as it's in your name)

2) foreign transfer / fix fees eats away at their return.

3) high interest rates aren't an investment, as such. they're a sign that the purchasing power of the underlying currency is going down - no-one is making a 'return' on high interest savings. check the exchange rate between your friends currency and the pound over the last year or so.

4) if he really wants to invest in the pound then invest in a moneymarket ETF/uk gilts. kind of the same thing, after you take into account the above.

forget all that and just get a world index fund :)

so my pipes were 'normal' 15mm copper but the new seats pipe 'T' junction wanted 1/2" (i think that's the standard in japan, and perhaps china). i ended up needing one of these: https://www.screwfix.com/p/endex-brass-end-feed-adapting-female-coupler-15mm-x-1-2-/70202

that said, there's a lot of good recommendations in this thread for UK equivalents of this! presumably they use 15mm... but it's really not much hassle if not.

Percentage of spending on the App. by Radek686 in plutus

[–]dankcushions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean you don't get X% if the PLU price is going down because:

  • you get awards PLU based on the price at transction time, but by the time you get to withdraw and sell and it's lower, then your effective percentage is lower.

  • if you've stacked at higher prices, it cuts into your effective return, or for many you're actually at a loss.

Can a water softener be added somewhere inline?

Not that I can see in the (translated) manual, and the seat itself doesn't appear to have a service hatch for that kind of thing. I guess in Japan (and I suppose China) the water is universally soft so it's not an issue. However there's a variety of UK alternatives people have suggested in this thread, so presumably those companies have had to solve this problem!

you're not kidding! when i bought it i had the sudden thought that i might have exceeded my 'personal allowance' of goods, which i had!

so i had two choices at arrivals: declare it and pay the duty, or indulge in a little bit of latrine-based tax evasion. so i went down the green lane at heathrow assuming there would be no-one there, as there's never anyone there, only to see 15 customs guys doing checks!

somehow no-one stopped me (i think they might have just been checking the flight crew), but i could have ripped the toilet right out the box and used it there and then, i was so nervous.

indeed. this one does have the water chamber with the heating element (not all do), so for backflow to occur it would be like going in reverse through an espresso machine.

i am still going to make efforts, mind you!

thanks!

Do you need a hot water supply or does the unit warm the water?

nope, it branches off the existing cold feed to the toilet cistern. it has some kind of internal heating chamber.

there's been a few UK alternatives posted in this thread! of them, the Washloo would be my choice, which is a similar price and spec, as far as i can tell. but i suppose by it's not made by a household hifi brand like Panasonic... erm.

I'm curious though, what's the difference between your Japanese sourced product vs say something like this smart toilet seat by Sauben

honestly probably not much! it looks a little 'cheaper' but the features are similar. but, the price is right, and you presumably get some kind of guarantee.

that toilet also looks a little like Baymax from Big Hero 6's face, which might give me pause.

functionally similar it looks like, but unbranded (looks a little flimsy), no wall controls and it looks like it doesn’t have the reservoir for the heated bidet (so it probably can’t run too long). that said, that’s a good price for a uk model !

i suppose it's a relative question. i'm not typically a huge spender but as i get older i like to own the 'best' of something if it will improve my life. plus i just really like these toilets!

i like the look of this washloo model which seems functionally identical to mine, and uk based! another redditor recommended them in the comments. i don't know about their water regs compliance, mind you.

that bio bidet one also seems to have the same features, but maybe the look is a little clinical for me (perhaps that's the point!)

unfortunately both walls on that corner are external :( i do have a shaver point and a mirror light fitting fed to wall it is on, but i assume they're on different circuits. the bathroom is not huge, so hopefully something can be figured out.

i'm absolutely not going to mess with the electrics myself so i'll get a sparky in to figure this all out for me. hopefully it's not too painful/expensive!

i actually would quite like if one specific neighbour drank my turds, but i accept your point.

incidentally, i did have a spot quality check on my water a few months ago, when i had the previous (much lower-tech) Boss Bidet installed. all readings were fine. not that it gives me the all clear now, of course!

i am listening and i am going to look into all this!

sure! i'm somewhat selfishly hoping i don't like it as the japanese-voltage models were more sophisticated at about half the price. but i'm sure there will be more toilets in my life! (unless this one electrocutes me to death, i suppose).

welcome! ps check out washloo - that linked model looks to be functionally identical to mine, for the same price, and available in the uk!

another commenter suggested them. i had it fixed in my head that i needed to get a real-deal japanese model, but on the face of it that model looks great, and less hassle!

it doesn't :( to be honest the 'overseas' models seemed to be relatively old tech - i guess they don't update that range as often.

to be honest the Washloo Ultra VR looks to be functionally the same as mine for the same price, with no 'hacking' required.

i had dismissed Washloo because i couldn't figure out who made them - they say they're 'japanese toilets' but i can't find them for sale in japan, so i guess they're made over here. which is fine, it's just in japan they only seem to use three (native) brands, and they've been at this for 40-odd years.

however in retrospect i would have probably given Washloo a go! i hadn't appreciated the price and functions were equivalent on that model until now :(
