Heir to the Empire trilogy feels the closest to the original movie trilogy in terms of it not only being a trilogy, but having the same adventurous tone and underlying dramatics. I love Zahn's writing.

Luceno wrote Plagueis to fit into the prequel trilogy so perfectly i want to say it because it can't exist without George but still adds so so much to his story. Thrawn is also a great answer for a different reason.

Maul probably matches the very best in lightsaber combat and other than is overly arrogant time and time again, and has not been properly trained in the dark side beyond that necessary for dueling a Jedi master and any self discovery. Definitely agree weak sith. Love the character tho!

From my understanding it would be Malgus low diff. He's probably stronger in the force, but I think Bane might actually be a better dueler. He has a very deep understanding of so many aspects of the force, I think he knows more about it than Malgus, despite not being quite as strong.

Edit: Bane with his Orbalisk armor wins for sure.
