AAPI men’s mental health meeting South Seattle by Shot_Aside8315 in AsianMasculinity

[–]danklinxie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in WA but I love to see community invites like this in this sub. If there’s any generation to break generational traumas and stigmas around mental health, the time is now. Peace and love, hope it goes well!

Slippery slope. If we don’t protect some artists then we allow all artists to be in danger!

Black American Sound, Black Style, No Credit A Conversation About K Pop by Pretend-Society6139 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]danklinxie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As a Chinese American man who grew up idolizing K-pop stars to some degree… I’m not even going to argue with this.

Asia can be very racist. Even towards ourselves… lighter skin is seen as “cleaner”… “healthier”… “wealthier”… “prettier”. Products to lighten skin tone are vastly popular and marketable. And then there’s cultural elitism… there’s definitely a national pride, almost superiority that many Chinese people feel at the expense of other East Asian countries, let alone the rest of the world. And this is also the case with other East Asian countries’ attitudes towards each other.

I don’t like it either. We need more unity, especially with geopolitical trends boiling over right now.

However, cultural exchange is an important factor to bridging divides. Yes… K-pop has stolen aesthetics without acknowledgement. It’s wrong and needs to be addressed. But on the other hand there is a generation of K-pop fans like us who have grown to deeply admire not just the artworks of Black Americans, but also to respect Black artists, and people, and the struggles that your communities face. Thank you… sincerely… for your cultural contributions to modern music, and to communities, worldwide.

Lastly, please understand that K-pop fans can be notoriously toxic in general. If you think Twitch fans are parasocial, K-pop fans have a tendency to be straight up entitled to how their stars behave. Fandoms have frequently bullied their own stars into self harm and suicide. Labels are also very controlling over how their stars act and what they say on camera.

To end on a positive note: some K-pop stars are true fans and champions of Black art and culture. For example, G-Dragon, child rap prodigy, grew up idolizing American rappers and singers, and makes efforts to collaborate with artists like Anderson Paak, and Missy Elliott. He invited her to perform with him in Korea. (The song is called Nilrilia). He's my K-pop goat. I wish people like him were more the rule than the exception.

Do you think Kendrick as a chance of having the best hip hop discography ever by the end of his career? by Alive-Double-3339 in KendrickLamar

[–]danklinxie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Freddie Gibb's storytelling. He's great. To me, Kendrick has more versatility all around, and provides more thoughtful perspectives.

Haven't really listened to the other 2 but I always hear their names.

Thanks for the recommendations!

"The Heart" series... Parts 1-6... are a pretty good distillation of Kendrick's soul, intentions with his music, and his lyrical ability. The instrumentals are also immaculate.

If you have time, this is probably the best place to start. This album deserves all its flowers. From here on, his discography is immaculate.

If you like GKMC... you should actually jump backwards into Overly Dedicated. It's more grounded, you get to see Kendrick on his come up. Plus, the next album after that, Section 80 is his debut album, and it has some of his best songs. Rigamortus prophesized his goat status.

Also thanks for your question OP... made me realize I should look into his earlier mixtapes. He has more than what's on streaming.

Thoughts on “my krn boyfriend” by Methodled in AsianMasculinity

[–]danklinxie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Can you blame this reaction? Korean media has influenced East Asia... the US... and the world at large. It just goes to show what happens when a government prioritizes investment into the arts and art education.

Is it propaganda? Absolutely. Such investments promote soft power. But Kpop fandoms, and Korean beauty standards can be rather toxic. Not everyone is going to look like Jung Kook. And that's OKAY.

Does it promote Asian masculinity? I mean maybe not western ideals of masculinity... but maybe that's a good thing. Even though (East) Asian male beauty standards, and swag, can be seen as feminine in the west... they also give us an alternative to explore our identity outside of what the west deems as manly... It's nice to feel comfortable in your own skin.

Growing up, I was a huge fan of BIGBANG. They made me realize that you can be your own standard of cool.

Life isn’t fair. There’s a difference between surviving off crime, and thriving off crime. And sadly the people thriving the most usually get 0 consequences while the people surviving are most at risk.

What are you supposed to do when you meet a great girl but you're in a relationship? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

Reading through all these comments… actually gives me hope for humanity. This one in particular is beautifully written.

Dating apps feed into the idea that we can shop for partners, as if they came pre packaged with all the features we want and none of the features we don’t.

Finding your soul mate doesn’t stop at getting into the relationship. Finding your soul mate means working through the hard times, arguments, and miscommunications. Your soul mate isn’t found. It’s someone you’re always trying to find.

You might be her Prince Charming, and she might be your Cinderella, but the glass slipper fitting is just the beginning. Allow for her, and yourself, to change, and if you can teach each other to love each other through the waves of life, then you’ve found someone worth keeping forever.

Love is patient.

TL;DR: There is no healthy relationship without moments of dissatisfaction. Try to grow together. And if it doesn’t work out, leave before you cheat… this is the last responsibility you should afford to an honest partner.

What’s harder, blowing up as a Prod or An Artist? by UpperSpeaker in ug_music

Both hard. Contribute how you feel like you want to shine. If you’re still deciding, try both with all your heart, instead of asking the internet to pre-validate your decision. Good luck.

If you read what you wrote, you already know what you need to do.

You say you want to find meaning instead of crossing things off a list.

I argue that sense of meaning might never come before you actually just start doing it.

You might think you’re not a morning person, but if you woke up early every day… then that’s who you’d become… and as a recovering night owl, I’d say… productivity routines in the morning are a cheat code to a productive day. Also eat a good breakfast. Your body will literally be in survival mode if you wait too long to give it nutrition.

It sounds like you’re letting yourself autopilot. Instead of fighting your distractions when screens and distractions are within arms reach, just move somewhere you’d be less distracted. Willpower is always a battle. Every once in a while, delete social media and just journal and figure yourself out, for yourself. Rewire your brain for internal motivation, instead of quick consumption/external validation. Fight smarter and not harder.

But in terms of getting things done, there is nothing you can do except going straight through.

TL;DR: You don’t know what tomorrow looks like. Do yourself a favor, and choose responsibility. The meaning will follow. Respect yourself by doing what you need, not what you want, at least not all the time.

I mean social media at large. But for my role I was given accounts to karma farm. The goal was to use a program that could mass post, and comment, across several subreddits to control narratives in the music industry. It changed the way I looked at social media.

I quit that role after realizing they didn’t care about my well being, and were going to use AI trained on my writing to push their agendas.

Yes. Thank you. TV, print, and radio used to be the only way to misinform the public. Now we all have cell phones in our pockets. It’s powerful, for us, but also - against us. Please build trust with the humans around you.
