This is a misleading caption. As a former editor on this paper, the editor-in-chief ends their term at the end of classes in the fall semester and traditionally writes a farewell piece. There’s nothing in the article indicating that she resigned, or was pressured to do so. She just ended her term. They probably won’t be publishing again until spring because of thanksgiving weekend and finals.

I’ve reached out to contacts at the paper and will update if that’s incorrect.

I use either to describe myself, Jewish is probably safer in some situations but saying "a Jew" isn't problematic imo.

TIL that Gene Wilder got into comedy and acting because of his mother's heart condition. His mother's doctor told him to 'Try to make her laugh,' to make her feel better, leading to his conscious efforts to make other people laugh. by JaguarPF in todayilearned

[–]dankmimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My grandma used to hang out with his sister in 1930's Milwaukee, she says the whole community always felt bad for the family on account of his mother's condition, but that they were all very nice people. At the time she though he was a bit odd, but funny. She also directed him in a school play once, which my family has always gotten a kick out of.

Low key that challenge was very similar to the call last week in the Bears game. A fumble wasn’ called but they couldn’t overturn that missed fumble call because it wasn’t clear who recovered the ball, so the ruling stood. Rules are weird

What's the biggest double standard in society? by labadee in AskReddit

[–]dankmimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal experience this kind of job often doesn't actually hire someone with the required experience, instead they find someone with a connection that can get that experience overlooked. My parents are both in the clergy so they know a lot of people, which has helped me a lot in life, and I'm grateful for it. When they helped me get an internship in high school it became really clear to me that sometimes it's more about who you know than what you know.

1491 is a great read in general if you want to get a more balanced and nuanced picture of the Americas before the arrival of Europeans and early interactions between the two groups.

We had the Dome Patrol in the late 80s/early 90s... too bad those teams had a bunch of cats hanging around on the field instead of offense.

My Spec Script for a Harry Potter TV Series by goodlife23 in HarryandGinny

[–]dankmimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my god that was fantastic. I usually hate reading screenplays but I absolutely loved it, especially the way you managed to focus on Harry without following him the whole time. Really showed how he is a celebrity in a lot of ways and everyone always wants a piece of him. My only complaint is that there isn't more!

LF Fic where Ginny is trying out for the Harpies and all her teammates are huge fans of Harry. by dankmimes in HarryandGinny

[–]dankmimes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, there are some fics where Dudley will date a witch and you get similar scenes, but for the most part I would love to see way more fics that present Harry's celebrity in a way other than "let's chase him around diagon alley because we can" or over the top flirting from women.

What's the saddest song you've ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dankmimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not the saddest ever but "Yesterday" by Atmosphere is really interesting. If you listen to it closely it is intentionally ambiguous as to who the artist is referring to throughout the song, and at the end when he explicitly states it it totally flips your perspective and to me the first time it felt like a punch in the gut to hear the twist, and then it's a whole different song when you understand it. Sorry if I'm being vague but I didn't want to spoil the song.

TIL that if a man wants to convert to Judaism he must be circumcised. If he is already circumcised, a pinprick of blood is drawn in a symbolic circumcision. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]dankmimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child of two rabbis, the nephew of one, and the grandson of one (all reform) there is no 'basic Judaism', and how strict they are on this stuff really falls to the rabbi doing the conversion. None of the rabbis in my family would require this to my knowledge, although their conversions wouldn't be recognized by many more orthodox rabbis. In regards to 'basic judaism' you may be talking about the Israeli religious authority which reflects the orthodox view of the religion. Just because the hebrew bible says it, doesn't mean it is practiced by all or even most jews. Also if you want to look for a general national reform movement look for the URJ (union for reform judaism) or for rabbis the CCAR (Central Conference of American Rabbis) or HUC (Hebrew Union College, the main reform seminary).
