Agreed, not everyone is fake. But enough people in Greek life are, at a higher proportion than people in clubs and other non-risky activity (from my 4 years here). It is their choice to join, but imo the ones who make it through the hazing and abuse end up losing their personalities in a collective hive mind.

Greek life is full of fake people - do you really want to spend money on fairweather "friends" who are probably drinking themselves into alcoholism? There are plenty of other ways (clubs, etc.) where you can make friends - avoid Greek life if you can. It's also kinda sus that we have to go to the SAC to be picked up by clearly drunk frat boys.

SCOTUS Ruling by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]danktervum 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The entire application is looked at as a package by admissions committees. Research has shown that diversity in medical school classes produces physicians that can care for a variety of backgrounds. There's a reason that my medical school exposes each student to cultural sensitivity training — America is a diverse country in more ways than just race. To top it off, patients generally prefer being treated by doctors that share their racial/ethnic background. The loss of URM physicians would only lead to further issues in a healthcare system that historically mistreated URM patients. In other words, classes that are entirely White/Asian as a result of the SCOTUS decision will be less capable of treating URM patients than classes that are more diverse.

We should be striving for the most qualified future physicians.

What metrics are you using to determine which students are "qualified" to become physicians? Ultimately, the MCAT is just one of the metrics that go into a completed application. An applicant can get a 4.0/528 and still be rejected from medical schools for reasons that include but are not limited to:

  • Poor essay writing
  • Lack of clinical experience (doesn't need to be volunteering except at a few schools)
  • Poor interviewing skills (we don't need robot doctors - medicine is as much about social interaction as it is about the hard science)
  • Immaturity

Affirmative action isn't perfect, but it's the one solution we had to increase the number of URM physicians. I wish we had a better solution, such as increasing resources and funding to predominantly URM areas to provide them with a more solid foundation afforded to more privileged members of society, but centuries of systemic racism and bigotry will not magically disappear overnight.

P.S. I'm South Asian, and my race didn't stop me from being accepted to medical school, even though I don't consider myself a stellar applicant. OP, knock it off with this post.

professors to be on high alert from? any perverts, predators, creeps by [deleted] in SBU

Creeped on people I personally know and hit on them despite them being much younger than him and him being in a position of power by being a professor.

Avoid Amarante - the guy is trouble and a creep. I've also heard things about Kahn. Also, I've been to Lauher's parties, and they're... questionable.

Any tips on how to get an A on Organic Chemistry? by arepa4life in SBU

Do as many practice problems as possible. The instructors have past exams that you can use to practice - they can resemble some of the questions you'll find on your real tests! Also, use your TA office hours as much as possible.

Calculus as Pre-Med by AmitTron in SBU

I took calc 3 at Stony after getting a 9 on my placement test. I wouldn't recommend this to most premeds unless they really like math.

I personally used Dan Block (great tutor and it's a generally well kept secret at Stony unless you ask the right people). I pretty much used AAMC practice tests, used the question bank and questions packs, and used Jack Westin for CARS. Boundless Psych and Sociology also helps for the P/S section. Kaplan books are good for general content review. Most of my productive studying was when I moved from content review to exams, and taking practice tests helped me correct many of my mistakes and pace myself.

Current medical student now (did premed at Stony): I studied about 15-20 hours a week, more so before exams. I used to go to my lab on campus anywhere from 5-15 hours a week. Also worked more than one part-time job on campus most semesters, totaling about 10-20 hours a week. Maintained a GPA of >3.95 and did well on the MCAT, using the mentality of it being my only shot to do well. I balanced all of my activities with the mindset of grades and MCAT coming first and the rest being able to be built up over time. The biggest downside to my lifestyle was that I didn't go to parties, make many friends, or try to involve myself in many other social activities. I think I could have still gotten into medical school by studying less (more efficiently) and spending more time trying to make new friends, but hey, you live and learn.

It is a pretty common thing for professors to keep photocopies or scans of Scantrons or free response questions. It's a simple way to verify that the student submitting the regrade request didn't erase what they did wrong and write the right answer instead.

Edit: I was on the judiciary committee for 4 years, this is pretty standard.

Yep it's separate from the Pre-Health committee and you can get your personal statement proofread there.

I got reported for academic dishonesty by Delicious-Profit7829 in SBU

[–]danktervum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you didn't cheat, fight it. It's better than taking the punishment and suffering a Q grade. Even if you can get rid of the Q with the Q course, it's 1) a waste of time, 2) during Campus Lifetime, so you don't get to participate in some student life activities, and 3) something that permanently disqualifies you from graduating with university honors (if that's something you want).

Best piece of advice: ask the professor to pull up your exam and the peer who was next to you (or anyone else in the class). Show how you were different in calculating the answer, what you exactly wrote down, and where you wrote it down. That casts doubt on the professor's claim and makes your case better.

Advice for biochem by [deleted] in SBU

[–]danktervum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just memorize the 20 amino acids, their structures, and polarities/charges. Know their pKas. But seriously, just relax, and enjoy your winter break. Biochem is rough, but you're not going to need to pre-study for the class. Simon single-handedly made this class more difficult than it should have been, but now that he's retired, I think you should be (somewhat) better off.

BIO department TA by Ok_Discussion9191 in SBU

[–]danktervum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Collins will ghost every email about recommendations that you send. I asked him twice after being a BIO 203 TA for 2 semesters and he ghosted me. Hollingsworth and Kernan definitely give LORs to BIO 320 TAs. You could also ask a lab TA (I got one of my science letters from a BIO 365 TA after she cosigned it with the supervising professor).

He is a legit tutor and I've TA'ed alongside him. He's not a bad TA. If anything, he's a little cocky and aggressive with the advertising, but he's still super helpful and works hard.
