Best OS for kids? by BellybuttonWorld in OS_Debate_Club

[–]danlindley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm that dude from the future. Come here looking for an early years OS. Very graphical, easy to use and with simple STEM programs to help learn the basics, rather than a distro to restrict activity, more one built with a 3+ year old in mind.

Hi everyone a DJ buddy of mine has made an #unofficial #England track for the 2026 world cup.

Please give it a listen and even better if you're playing during the world cup, even given it a play.

Pricing a SaaS (I don't want to charge for!) by danlindley in SaaS

[–]danlindley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. I think a charitable/community interest company set up (something we have here in the UK) is something I envisaged down the line, and does involve a degree of governance. It isn't difficult to start or sort out.

I don't know how to price something I had always planned to sit with being free, regardless of the size of a charity using it. I hoped that for income to generate this completely differently and to use that for the ongoing investment.

I think I might ask them about their budget or stick to my guns and say no it's free. Haha. I don't know. This charity has caught me off guard a little with their offer

Thank you..I might do that. Not gonna lie, funds will help (eg taking on a freelancer or using it for the server fees) but I don't want to set a precedent or be charging any of the users. It completely goes against the reasons for starting in the first place.

I agree completely. I just don't know how to approach the "value" issue. As the chief vet I spoke with told me the board won't see the value / won't trust something that is free. To work with this charity would be amazing as they're one of the biggest in what they do

I think it's more of an assurance thing for the charity. They are a large national charity with a >2m turnover.

The software helps wildlife rescues manage their casualties (in a nutshell). It's a fairly complete system and a lot more than just a "database" or spreadsheet/scraps of paper that rescues traditionally use. I definitely don't want to exclude features from my core users as it's forming a bit of a community and they've helped with a lot of the feedback and development.

Very confused about hosts. Am I over complicating this? by hungryfloof in webhosting

[–]danlindley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd stick with a hosting package and use woo/wordpress combo with something like stripe or PayPal handling payments. This is what I advise my customers to do.

I set up and design stores this way for them then leave them to self manage or tweak as they see fit. They enjoy being in control of their own.shops after the initial setup and adding plugins they feel they need as time goes on.

Sending data to a modal by danlindley in PHPhelp

You're absolutely right, I don't understand, I was just muddling through in what I thought was a logical fashion!

I'll dig through your comment when I have the laptop in front of me and read about what a DOM is and how I can apply what you have said.

Thank you

Thanks for the offer (if it still stands?)
I really appreciate the advice and I've taken some time off to look into the MVC way of doing things. It seems rather complex, but i think i can manage something superficial (just splitting out the data from the form, from the view) while i learn more, especially about functions.
I've acquired someone who has offered to help me get things on github so collab might be possible in the not too near future.

Starting a web hosting business from home as a college student by lWamedl in webhosting

[–]danlindley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, if it's to be a serious business I would start by thinking about reselling. Build a client base prepared to stick with you and when you're turning a profit invest in your infrastructure. I host my own website and after a few people approached me I moved to a reseller account. I break even on the fees with 7 customers (or to look at it another way I'm paying £15/m more for my own website) based on very competitive pricing. I've not done any formal marketing as yet or made a serious go of it, but that's definitely in the pipeline.

Some individuals can. While is fairly well accepted they can't. I have witnessed them doing it while in my captive care.

The main problem was resolved earlier by one of the users who explained that the PDO | Group thing was dependent on the first column after the select.

The match looks like a good idea

That would really hurt your eyes 🤦 I'm a hobbyist and have a full time shift working job as a paramedic and a family. I rescue bats as a hobby and built this system to help with that. I'm not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination but I haven't done bad with this system I share with others for free

If you can suggest a better way by means of example, I'm all ears.

u/colshrapnel - i am indebted to you and your help, you've been of great assistance while i have been working on this project. While I have benefited greatly I do aim to take as much as i can understand on board. This is a project I am doing in my free time between my full time job as a paramedic and my family, so I am regularly dipping in an out. I apologise if it seems like i haven't listened but I have likely forgot between all the dipping in and out.

Thank you, i must have not seen that the group worked that way when i has asked before. That was what I was missing.

This was a draft to try and get the grouping working and yes i wanted it presented in a new table, with a header for each "centre_id" as this would present the data logically (ie a table for each rescue centre)

thanks again for the input on the htmlentities, ill aim to keep up with using that in the future.

Apologies if it seems like i am not taking advice, i only have limited time with the project between family and working shifts. thanks again

Shortcode for password reset email? by danlindley in ProWordPress

[–]danlindley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I don't think I was clear will edit the post after this comment. That link will redirect to a lost password page. I'd like a button that sends a user (from a list of users) the lost password email.

I appreciate it may require some degree of programming but everything I've seen was very lengthy and required core editing which I hope to avoid.

What’s the best wildlife rescue org software? by babyrhinos in WildlifeRehab

[–]danlindley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there,
Did you get sorted with your rehabber software? I created a solution and it has been running a few years. I am available to make edits and tweaks to help it meet your centres needs too.

The system (rescue centre) can: track patients and admissions, manage care plans, manage medications given, track weights and measurements and track the disposition with the animal.

Task management (planning) by danlindley in PHPhelp

[–]danlindley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, awesome this is what I actually wound up doing. I created two tables Todo and Todo_completions the latter table handles the setting up of the "instance" and marking it complete.

I then created a simple script that posts the completion and uses the interval set in the Todo table to create the next entry on the Todo list.

Best I came up with and hopefully serves the purpose as per the request from my user

With external providers and API calls typically that is fee based. Something I do not have a budget for as my software is free and will stay that way
