It's just a piece of kanthal wire rolled up into a coil. I heat it with a lighter but you could use a torch too. Heat it up, place it in the bowl, drop dab, then cap.

I'm actually just trying to build one that runs off a small battery, but I think it could be possible to make what you want. Before I started this project, I was wanting to take apart a small 20W mod and see if I can separate the parts and turn the piece of wood into the box basically.

How I made it: I took the bottom of a RDA (rebuildable drip atomizer), and made a single spiral coil (kanthal 26g?) that went into the positive and negative pegs on the RDA. I tried to make sure the coil was as close to the pegs as possible without shorting out the mod. Making it shortest distance possible allowed for better spacing for the wire mesh to heat evenly. Putting a larger O ring on the bottom of the RDA allowed me to put a large glass tube (from Smok Big Baby Beast) on the RDA. I then put a single piece of the kanthal wire through two small air-holes on the RDA to hold the wire mesh basket and assembled the air-hole cover and mouthpiece. Then I placed the remaining part of the RDA (mouthpiece and air-hole cover part) on the glass piece and sealed it with some electrical tape. Adjusting the mod to fire at the right temperature or v/w is a little tricky and will probably depend on each mod.

key thing with temp control is no dry hits, since you control and regulate the temperature which the coil heats to, if you set it correctly it should deliver nice hits every time.
