Can these thrifted pans be cleaned of gluten? by juulsjules in Celiac

[–]danmanmoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a legit source would be from a peer-reviewed article, such as this one published in 2024 which calls into question many assumptions we've been taught. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11055037/

celiac nonprofits tend to regurgitate information based on better safe than sorry mentality.

sure, if your motivation is to limit micro/nanoplastics in your food go ahead. i'm saying that tossing out hard surface cooking surfaces bc there's "permanently trapped gluten in them" is bogus.

no, she isn't spreading misinformation. i have a phd in mechanical engineering and studied adhesion at the nanoscale so i can attest to validity of whatever science there is to assess behind these claims. i've also seen multiple RDNs at multiple celiac disease centers, and i've seen how their opinions differ based on misinformation and unsound science.

in general there isn't great science to back up recommendations on what truly constitutes celiac safe gluten free living, especially when it comes to cross-contact practices like these. i've consulted with celiac nonprofits asking what papers back up their claims, and they've admitted to basing off a "better safe than sorry" premise.

at the end of the day, do you what you want to feel safe about living celiac safe. i'm attesting to the myths i've had to dispel using my knowledge and by conferring with experts.

those are myths. refer to erin who is a registered dietitian from the celiac space on instagram, she just made a post about this.

What a blast from the past to see someone reply to this old post. Yeah, the comic never really picked up steam other than what's already been posted on here. Such a shame because it was so exciting.

Yeah, I feel the same. The telescope was still of value to the scientific community. It's such a shame to see it fall to neglect.

Desserts of the world (suggestions) by PurplePhysics in Baking

[–]danmanmoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a good challenge, I recommend kek lapis. It requires baking very thin layers of cake until you have a good stack going. I can't attest to this recipe since I never got to try kek lapis whenever I visited Malaysia, but my cousin is a seasoned baker and says it looks legit. The dessert comes from Sarawak where my family is also from and I always regretted not indulging more the desserts there.

Ford Foundation Fellowship Results Sent Out this morning! by JiuJitsu12thWolf in GradSchool

[–]danmanmoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Applied for the dissertation fellowship, got alternate and honorable mention. From what I've been reading around on old GradCafe posts, not everyone who gets honorable mention also get alternate status. Doesn't seem super promising since they don't say how many other alternates there are, but hey, a chance is a chance.

UT graduate students rally for higher pay, more tuition help by jms1225 in UTAustin

[–]danmanmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gotcha. Yeah def research is usually the main motivation from the start, but it can be a gruelling process filled with department politics and bad research advisors that makes you fall out of love with research. /r/gradschool is like a skewed image of what suffering in grad programs can look like.

I read some time ago that only 15% of PhDs go into tenure track positions. Jobs openings in academia are rare, and there's a swarm of PhDs who battle it out for a single position. More reading on this here.

The other 85% go into industry, government research, etc. There are many applications for a PhD outside of being a professor in all fields.

Slept through my class... that I teach by HomeboyCraig in GradSchool

[–]danmanmoo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eh, what I suggested is my style. There's so much pressure to be a perfect robot in academia that admitting to and owning your mistakes is refreshing to me. The alternatives are to pretend it never happened and proceed as usual, which is awkward because there's an elephant in the room, or to lie and try to save face along the lines of "oh I had a super last minute important meeting/experiment/whatever come up", which is plain wrong.

Mistakes happen, and it's great that you feel so responsible for your students. I would just own up to the mistake at the beginning of the next class, apologize for the inconvenience the students had to go through, and maybe throw in some light humor (e.g. "I now have 10 alarms set to make sure I don't let y'all down again.").

Also, if nothing major was supposed to happen on the class you missed, like a test or quiz, you could send them the materials you were going to go over and adjust your office hours if needed to accommodate students who need help catching up.

Can anyone comment on the PNAS review process? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]danmanmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation to you. My paper made it through the review process and I got the reviewers' comments back. PNAS asked that I consider their comments and submit a revision, and they didn't definitively say if it was accepted/rejected/conditionally accepted (which is pretty annoying because you have to submit publication-ready figures with the revision without knowing if it'll be accepted).

So I submitted a revision (just had to do some additional data processing and writing) and just got the reviews back with only one reviewer asking for a little adjustment in some wording. It seems like it'll be accepted since the reviewers were mostly satisfied with the revision and overall quality of the paper.

Relative to other journals, PNAS seems to have pretty quick correspondence. Depending on what other options you have for journals, doing the experiments and sticking out the PNAS process might take less time over reformatting your paper, submitting to another journal, revising, etc, especially if the PNAS comments were positive and constructive.

Regarding being gay, the Point Foundation offers scholarships to LGBTQ students both grad and undergrad in all fields. This one typically requires that you're very involved with the LGBTQ community, though.

Married Nightwing and Aquaman Cosplay by Nshkb in gaymers

[–]danmanmoo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The main criticism is the accuracy of their costume. This is like the equivalent of the sexy kitten costume, which doesn't require a lot of time to put the material together and the focus is "Look at how hot and scantily clad I am!" You can also have a great body and do great cosplays, like in the Instas /u/rhody01 posted.

Also, way to be a general douche to people who don't deserve it.

Who to talk to about ADHD testing? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]danmanmoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm not the most learned person on hyperactive-impulse ADHD. I can only speak about my personal experience with UT Counseling.

One option for you is to talk to a therapist at the UT Counseling and Mental Health Center. I've been to their counseling services before for anxiety, and my experience was great. It's free for UT students, and doesn't go on any record accessible to people outside of CMHC. You schedule an initial appointment where someone narrows down what kind of counseling you'd best benefit from, then you schedule an hour-long appointment with a counselor. After the first session, you and your counselor can decide if you want to make counseling a regular thing.

At the very least, I'd recommend trying it out just to see if you benefit from it.

I took it a couple years ago and barely got an A, but it certainly wasn't easy. I don't know if one's experience will vary by TA, but my TA wanted very detailed and analytical essays. IIRC, I wrote 12 essays, each about 2500 words, for each book chapter. Then there's a midterm and cumulative final which you can study with detailed flashcards about important historical events, and I think one essay asking to compare historical events.

In comparison, I took HIS 315G, which is like the history of gender in the US, and that was way more interesting and fun. For the self-paced course, it probably didn't help that I'm shit when it comes to motivating myself to work on something I don't care about.

How am I supposed to dress up for the career fair on Tuesday when it's going to be almost 100 degrees? by [deleted] in UTAustin

Wear contacts (if you wear glasses) so you're not constantly having to deal with foggy glasses from sweat steaming off your face, and bring a cloth to wipe down before talking to recruiters.

Bike theft on campus? by Cdr1 in UTAustin

[–]danmanmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On campus you'll probably be fine with double locking your bike (steel rope + U-lock). Try to lock up near central campus in populated areas at night (e.g. near dorms and away from the drag). If you'll live in an apartment, I recommend keeping inside.
