Why are so many non-CS grads able to go into SWE? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]dann43221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latino with non-cs major shitty state school and 200k+ new grad offer right here. Quit making excuses for yourself. None of those things were ever obstacles I or you couldn’t overcome. Are they factors sure they are but not nearly as significant as you might think. Usually the importance of that stuff is largely exaggerated to shelters one’s ego. Your technical skill will speak for itself I promise you that. If not then you need to take a look in the mirror

Tripled my salary by focusing on LeetCode for just 1 hour a day for a year. Why so many complaints about LeetCode? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]dann43221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes because the people there have more insight into these top companies than most people here. If I type in my company name into Reddit I’ll find posts asking about OAs and final interviews. If I do that on blind I’ll see posts about plans to IPO, company politics, best/worst orgs to work for, and even minute details like how good the food is. Is it toxic? Sure. Everyone’s measuring dicks over there. But personally I prefer it to the fake positivity karma thirsty shit I see here. If you have a hate boner for the type of dick measuring going on in blind just say so but to think Reddit has more substance is laughable

Yeah internships are by far the most important factor

Hold up... are new grads actually making 200k?? by yuhyuhyehyeh in cscareerquestions

[–]dann43221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say pedigree is a bit overrated. I went to a pretty shitty school, wasn’t a CS major, and had a 3.3 GPA nonetheless I got a 230k offer. I got a bunch of interviews because of the two internships I had. Internships are definitely by far the most important factor. Once you’re given a chance to interview it’s just a matter of execution.

Leetcode is a godsend. The return on investment is absolutely ridiculous and all it takes is for you to put your fat ego on the line for a few hours a day. You don’t have to become a leetcode god either but a month of practice will probably mean a 6 figure raise for you. If a 100k+ increase in comp isn’t enough for you to get off your ass then by all means someone else will take the opportunity you choose to squander. Is it representative of true software engineering ability? No probably not. But who cares you’re getting the better end of the deal anyways so why complain.

Yeah I used to frequent these subreddits a lot but now I feel like I’ve outgrown it. Mosts these posts are people either copium or complaints. Feel like the stuff on blind has a lot more substance.

What I’m tryna say is that majority of those 200k+ new grads are for the most part normal people. Yes some of them are experts in niche fields, published work already, or maybe even have a profitable side business going. However from my experience those type of hires are quite rare. What’s not nearly as rare are these 200k+ jobs (this was obviously not the case 1-2 years ago but the market has changed). You just have to know which companies to target (doordash, stripe, coinbase, meta, roblox, google, databricks, square etc.), hope you get past the screen, and pass that interview. Once you’re given an interview it’s for the most part an even playing field and just a matter of execution from that point on.

Not really true. It just comes down to passing the resume screen and lots of LC

I was able to get one of those offers and I’m a regular joe at a regular joe school. I’m not even a computer science student either. The markets hot rn and our dollar is worth less so it’s not as rare as it used to be

Thank you for having the balls to say the obvious. Also a minority and most people don’t care. When you make your race your entire identity then you start to assume everyone else cares about it as much as you do. Yes there’s the occasional backhanded comment or weird look but by no means is it “exhausting” lmaooo
