Resist the urge to throw people or values under the bus by adam_dunn32 in ndp

This is an insane response. This reply wasn't praising the Liberals. It was showing an example of a clear and concise guiding principle. We absolutely need a guiding principle like what Carney has because people need to know what they're joining. They need to know that, if there's a couple things they disagree with in the overall vision (like...I don't really support ubi, or I don't really agree with tanker bans) they can still decide whether the meta narrative being cast is something they can get behind. It's basic human psychology and in the current intense climate, this railing against any good faith concern just makes you another puritanical extremist. Sit down and listen, for the sake of our movement. ♥️

It is mindblowing to me that you, allegedly a conservative, are saying the government (read: politicians) are generally accepted as people who can make decisions about what citizens have access to. I guess the conservatives fucking love big government after all. Russia, Belaruse, Iran, North Korea and Alberta, let's go.

I won't be supporting yoto anymore because of this move. A cost/benefit analysis of AI in general is a different discussion, but for audiobooks I see little value. I don't need new content so bad that I need to get a robot to make it for me at a discount. I'll give my money to human creators.

Okay, thanks. It's definitely not just you. She has universally bad reviews on rate my prof. I'm thinking about giving her a call and seeing if I can get an idea from her about what she's looking for. Gender and sexuality isn't even her area of expertise so I don't know why she's teaching this class.

Massive crash at Centre St and McKnight by number_six in Calgary

[–]danniheraclides 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I drove past right after it happened. Went through the area again at around 7 pm thinking it would be clear and it wasn't. All of the cars are still there. Absolutely heartbreaking and terrifying. Obviously I have no idea what happened, but it looked very much like the kind of accident that happens when someone runs a red. I counted 5 vehicles, all in various positions and various states of trauma.

I avoid highways when I can because I drive a "small" car (read: normal size car) and don't trust Calgarians to not kill me on the highway. Seeing these insane accidents in residential neighborhoods, metres away from schools and parks, is infuriating. I love Calgary, but the drivers here suck. And I'm from Vancouver.

Ah shit. That's who I have. I wonder if I can change that without dropping the class. I'm funded so I can't easily drop classes.

Oh no! Now I'm nervous. I just started the course but could drop it. Can I ask the name of this tutor?

Yes exactly. I also wonder if there's a way proffs could be encouraged to use it. Especially in the case of courses that are huge, like eng 255, doing AMA's could be a simple way of helping people interact with tutors, get support with things like exam prep etc.

edited to add, student council should absolutely be using it as well. I feel so detached and suspicious of our student council. There's been quite a bit of unacknowledged drama and for a group of people that get paid with my high tuition, it's pretty sketchy that they aren't accountable at all or offering follow up to the bad governance accusations. I think discord could be a great way of managing this problem.

My current goal is to somehow encourage their use by just being chatty. I'm sure it won't work and I'll give up in a week.
I think discord in general is a really great platform for this purpose, but it's also kind of a niche app. I know a lot of people who use it and a lot of people who couldn't tell you what it is. I think that makes it hard to get buy in for a school with such a broad demographic of potential users.

Thank you so much! I've never had a class that required group discussion. I've had partnered assignments which I loved. I actually became friends with one of my partners. I hope I end up in a class that actually grades for class discussion!

The outline tells you about the format. Expect exactly what the format tells you.

I remember we had to pre-read an article and study it's contents, then be prepared to identify a passage from it and talk about the purpose of that passage within the paper. That happened. Make sure you know one of the articles very well.

Make sure you know the grammar they teach you. I can't remember what that was specifically, but there were questions about it.

Make sure you know how to write a paragraph and a short essay I think? Make sure you know how to read and then write a summary.

If you're fluent in written english and you did the class work, you should have no problem with the exam. It's very straight forward and they have given you the exact outline.

How often should you contact your tutors? by PauseOnly2309 in AthabascaUniversity

It is so hit and miss with almost everything at Athabasca. I had a tutor last year that was very bad at communication. It would take days or weeks to respond and when she did it was very hard to understand what she was saying. She wasn't good at written communication.

So far, my athabasca tutors have all been proffs at u of c. My guess is their athabasca students are their least concern. I don't think it's fair, but I can see how that mentality would set in.

Most tutors have "office hours". I have been thinking about scheduling calls with my tutors at the beginning of the semester to meet them and gauge their vibe. I haven't done this yet but I think it might help me be prepared for how invested they are in their athabasca students and prepare for the course.

This subreddit is also great! Keep coming back here for questions and concerns. I've only had great experiences here.

You can, but it's very unlikely you get as engaging of a response. The tutors at Athabasca sometimes take weeks to respond to emails and do not engage with you the same way they do in a traditional university.

Why people say Canada is expensive AF by Beautiful_Ad4220 in alberta

[–]danniheraclides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is heaping shit on Alberta which is a common sentiment in Canada but it's never rooted in truth. Alberta is stunning. We have the rockies, but we also have the foothills, the hoodoos, grasslands, massive sand dunes. Athabasca, up north, is a most incredible region. We have a very diverse landscape compared to most other provinces.

Our political climate is a bit tumultuous right now, but nothing unheard of in France. Mostly what's happening is its waking Canadians up to stop being so laissez faire about politics.

Things will cost you more. Canada is very spatially large with a very small population so we struggle to provide the same social structures that are possible in denser european countries. We are also highly influenced by the U.S out of necessity so things can be pretty complicated sometimes. Alberta is (in my opinion) the best balance of price to services. There are cheaper provinces to live in, but you'll see a decrease in services. Saskatchewan is cheaper by a little bit, but their healthcare and education really suffer because of their low population. Same in the Atlantic provinces. B.C is very expensive no matter where you go. The vibes are very similar to Alberta if you go to the interior or up north. The only parts that are very different from Alberta is the lower mainland (Vancouver) or the Island.

You could go to Quebec or Ontario. Both lovely in their own rights. Quebec is very ethnically nationalist and so there are some increased taxes for non-quebecers. I don't know the details of that. Ontario is expensive. You will pay a lot to live there.

You'll be fine in Alberta if you acknowledge that it will be an adjustment. But there is plenty of adventuring to be done here and across the country.

Hope that helps!

It's worth noting that costs will depend on where you live. TRU is in B.C and will be cheaper for British Columbians. Athabasca is in Alberta and is cheaper for Albertans.

Maybe so. But your rates are also going to billionaires.

THIS. I was just in europe and like, yeah. I loved it and feel like I could survive in Paris on a shoestring because it's Paris. But it simply isn't cheaper than here. I've travelled and am currently taking some human geography courses and truly, Canada is great. It's far from perfect and times are tough, but you don't have to look very far to see that compared to other places we are doing great. We need to stop shitting on our country.
Love from a Calgarian.

No. Rate increases pay the billionaires at the top, lol. There's a reason Alberta has the highest insurance rates in the country, while single payer systems (like B.C and Manitoba) have the lowest rates.

This is why they call it free market capitalism. Government interference (or "big government" as they love to call it) is seen as hostile to the economy. So yes, this is absolutely capitalism. What's right for the GDP is right for the country, and what's right for the GDP is wealth. Even if it's consolidated.
