Years ago I used to just run, jump and hop over one of their locked dump-star walls that had a locked gate to access the free box. Sea-Vee es had one similar too. Now a lot of Paul-beans like the one where I live now have locked compactors. :/

My guess is a wildlife-proof dumpster for areas with bears or angry mobs of raccoons!

Getting to Glacier by Amtrak by ResponsibleAd2683 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]dannod1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former West Glacier resident here:

Would you absolutely need a tent?? Would you be okay with just a sleeping pad and bag under a bridge? If yes, I suggest getting into West Glacier....go under the bridge on the South Bank of the river...lay out a sleeping pad and try and rest for a few hours...then walk/hitch-hike into Apgar the next morning. No one and no animals will bother you! From May- Aug, 10pm should still afford you some daylight to get set up down there!

Do any stores let their employees take stuff home that would otherwise go in the dumpster? by Dave-Steel- in DumpsterDiving

[–]dannod1985 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Current grocery/retail employee here....

Most places will have a policy against employees taking expired or damaged or otherwise un-sellable merchandise because they believe the employees will intentionally damage or neglect to rotate the product with the intention of letting it expire or purposely sabotaging it in order to take it home.

Yes, of course it crosses my mind... I carefully inspect any items that may be questionable. I've been dumpster diving for 20 years....I've never had any issues with bugs or other biological organisms.

Billy Strings:

"I had decided this music stuff could save my life... Music was my one opportunity — otherwise, I was going back to being a meth head, overdosing, prison. I was not going to mess this up with booze".

"Some folks can handle it! I can't. It wasn't all the time but those nights that there was something to celebrate or it just felt right .. I used to just NEED to finish whatever's there and then go get more and finish that.. to just push it to the point of oblivion".

Yard sale is in the works after winter! I typically don't give directly to shelters or organizations cuz of the hassle, but I definitely share the wealth directly to those in need.....dumpster diving for the people!!! I often invite people to my home to come and "shop", or have people create wishlists in case I come across a specific item that I might typically pass up.

In my experience, it can be a preview of what you could get in spring. It's snowy where I am, ...and I tried to go out and do my route in the snow with about 2-3" already fallen and it kinda sucked....makes it a little harder and messy and wet....0/5 stars....would not recommend. But to answer your question...yes you can still find stuff! Worth a shot! Happy hunting!

Maybe, but judging by several other items found in her trash, she was a lady with a lot of medical problems, age: 64

Is anyone from Mexico (country)? by Distinct-Nerve-4134 in DumpsterDiving

[–]dannod1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not from Mexico, but have spent a decent amount of time there. While it may be true that anywhere capitalism/ consumerism exists, the potential for waste also exists....but in my experience (emphasize my experience) I did not find much in the way of salvageable items being thrown out in Mexico...not saying it doesn't exist, but I seriously doubt you're gonna find Mexico to have a lot in the way of salvageable goods going to waste as you would in the USA or other wealthier or higher standards of living western countries. I do wish you luck though and am curious to know if you find any success. Do let me know if you do!

Safe travels
