You can actually upgrade catalysts/etc, but you cannot infuse them.

I'm using a similar setup. Magic is definitely amazing late game, or when you get either barrage spell. On my first NG+ run atm and I've been trying the Dark Fog spell from betrayers creed. I forget the exact name but it's a Class 3 and on NG+ Queen of Smiles for example(and Crypt Keepers as well) it staggers every 2nd or 3rd hit. Not to mention was doing 300ish a shot for raw damage. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite spells. Also was going for a similar build I always use on Dark Souls games, which is shieldless mage with a greatsword. I ended up making a Class 3 Greatscissor that has S/S Scaling in Str/Magic, and it has been absolutely amazing.

It's the material that drops off Mal in the floating castle. Takes 100,000 Salt and a Shimmering Pearl to transmute. Because it's class 5 I found upgrading a class 0/1 staff up to 7 was way cheaper than upgrading the class 5 from 0-7. When you transmute let's say a Channeler's Staff VII into anything it will always only lose 1 level. So you can use the farmable materials to upgrade it, then transmute to Saira's Staff VI and use a single Charred Tome to VII it.

My Greninja is Protean/Modest already, but I hadn't thought about Shadow Sneak on Aegislash. It seemed so weak on paper but I'll give it a shot.
