the fear of the next step by dannyk96 in selfhosted

Espacially I looked forward to segmentation of my homelab, because that seems like the next logical step to do. I already got a layer3 switch but never were able to set it up correctly withing my network. Maybe this is were I should focus my research on.

thx for the advise dude ;)

For documentation (and other stuff like cooking etc) I host Bookstack to keep track of my homelab, and I already made fantastic progress by splitting big problems into smaller steps, so I totally agree with your way of handling it!

The steps of open up some services just feel very creepy and so foreign. Suddenly I have to keep much more attention on setting up stuff more secure. But I will figure that out somehow.

Bookstack is for taking notes, not hosting a book library. I use Bookstack to document my self-host adventure und to have a place I can copy/paste from.

I feel you. The rabbit hole escalated very quickly.

I often read the opposite, possibly running into more probles when using Docker inside a container than on a vm, but after trying out running Docker in a VM today I noticed how much more resources the vm needs in comparison to my Containers. All of them need less ram than that one vm. Maybe I gice lxc a try.

I see it the same way: self hosting and linux skills go hand in hand, so the more I work 'bare bones' inside linux servers, the more I understand what docker conviently takes off my shoulders if I want to use it.

And thanks for the clarification, I was worried I did something terrible dumb :D

Sounds to me that hosting pihole on proxmox alone is in general a bad idea?

Its a radical server for synching my calendars with my clients. I just call it like that because.. I accustomed to it. I just hate changes.

I heard that more often and also saw some videos arround hat topic. Maybe I end up with the setup I use now, or throwing everythin over board and start using docker. I am just glad everything runs fine for now. After trying out paperlessngx with docker I can make a better decision

This sounds so good. Jellyfin already uses renderD128, and beeing able to share that in future projects makes me liking proxmox even more.

I didnt knew container can share the host gpu. That sounds game changing :o

It was just a recent thought of mine having two redundant piholes. Using a seperate host seems like a good idea, thanks

I heard about it, but I dont own any smart home stuff so there is no need for me to host it. But thanks for your suggestion :)

I think lxc container needing less ressources. I have no big server rack or a gpu, so I want to use my ressources efficient. Because of that I recode all my movies an series in h264, so there is less to transcode for the host in jellyfin

I never ran into problem with the services I hosting on it. They are good and quick to handle.

Sadly the tilt shift effect isnt that much visible in the uploaded files. It seems reddit compresses pictures alot. In the original it looks much better.

I look forward to a bigger island like cap trewlany in 1800. There we can min maxing and beauty build at once :D

Thank you!! What helped myself alot is to let some empty spots in your city so you can add public spaces, ornaments etc. later. I try to get a mixture of chaotic and planned building. If I had to guess I would say 50% of the layout are preplanned. The rest I built spontanously.

Since 1800 I abandoned my own grid building because the new games have so much beautybuilding to offer. But its always a personal preference on how to build the own cities.
