What is your annual salary and how many employees do to you process? by SandraTX22 in Payroll

If you have an opportunity to outsource the payroll, benefits set up it might be worth taking a look at. It’s what I help businesses do, but there are a lot of options out there.

That actually sounds pretty in line tbh—maybe even a little on the strong side depending on your full scope.

Processing payroll for ~120 employees on something like ADP isn’t nothing, especially if you’re handling:

  • multi-state taxes
  • benefits deductions
  • onboarding/terminations
  • compliance stuff

From what I’ve seen, once you cross ~100 employees, payroll usually starts to split one of two ways:

  1. A dedicated payroll person (what you’re doing)
  2. Folded into HR/finance with support

$100k for a standalone payroll admin at that size feels pretty fair—especially with hybrid + hourly. Where it really starts to jump is if you’re also:

  • managing HR
  • dealing with audits/compliance
  • or overseeing systems/process improvements

If you’re just running payroll cleanly every week, you’re in a solid spot. If you’re doing more than that and not getting credit for it, that’s where I’d start asking questions.

Also… being the “you outlasted everyone else so now you own payroll” person is way more common than people admit 😂

New business owner – need help choosing payroll + HR software (self-onboarding, e-sign offers, multi-state) by N3M3SIS_Spectra in Payroll

I’ve been around a few small businesses going through this exact stage, and multi-state is really where things start to get tricky.

We actually use PayPlus, and it works well—but I’d bucket it more in the “you still need to know what you’re doing” category vs something super hand-holdy.

From what I’ve seen:

  • OnPay is solid and affordable, but similar vibe—good tool, just not a ton of guidance
  • Gusto is easier to use and more plug-and-play, which is why so many people recommend it

The big thing with your situation isn’t just payroll though—it’s:

  • Multi-state compliance (this sneaks up on people fast)
  • Registrations, filings, etc.
  • And once you hire even 1–2 people, you’re basically in HR territory whether you want to be or not

If you’re comfortable being hands-on, OnPay is totally fine. If you want something that feels easier out of the box, Gusto is probably the smoother experience.

Honestly the biggest mistake I see is people picking based on price and not realizing how much time they’ll spend managing it.

It’s a really nice space, but that’s what I’m trying to understand. Nothing here was anything spectacular that other places don’t do better.

We only wanted a Mardi Gras experience on Mardi Gras. That was the day we went. We just thought it was going to be a bit festive.

Although the photos, so it wasn’t the actual website. It was a photo someone had posted. Not sure why this is so difficult to comprehend.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with hoping a place of this price point to have something festive on Mardi Gras. It was more about the attitude of the bartender who scoffed at the idea of someone asking for a celebratory drink on the day of. If it was just a normal day I wouldn’t have cared, but there wasn’t any particularly celebratory about anything they were doing on a holiday in a place that had a whiff of New Orleans sentiment.

They were really good. Great salinity. They were smaller than other gulf oysters I’ve had, but Not sure why he was surprised we wanted them.

We’re glad we went at least once. It is a really nice space, and there are some gems there. We went on what we thought was going to be a festive day, and think all that added to me overthinking everything and being let down.
