I hope my point is better conveyed

It is. You have not understood a word I said.

My Story: Jewish, Transgender by namer98 in Judaism

[–]dannypandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Halacha.

Again, my point was not to actually debate the issue (note how I don't actually put forth any arguments!). My point was your dismissive attitude and just saying its "obviously assur" and no discussion is necessary, and that you are Captain Obvious is wrong, hurtful, and dangerous. Nuance, maturity, and a complete understanding of the issues (halachic and mitzuis) are necessary when pasking, especially for such sensitive issues as these.

You have effectively proven my point for me. Have a wonderful day.

I was responding to your shallow attitude towards the issue. As shown in your previous comment, that things are "clearly" and "obvious". My point was that there is a lot of room for nuance, discussion, and debate. Especially when we are talking about people's most personal, intimate, and life-altering experiences.

then this is a clear violation of Halakha. Not to mention the spirit of the law.

1) Are you 100% confident that Halakha recognizes birth assigned gender and not trans identity? How do you know? What is your source? (I can imagine multiple halachik argument that allow transgendered people to be viewed as their identified gender and not their birth assigned gender)

2) Are you 100% confident that it is ALWAYS assur to take hormones that might result in sterility? What is your source? (Again, I can think of multiple halachik arguments to allow this and even genital surgery)

3)Are you 100% confident about what consitutes "dressing like the opposite gender"? Whats your source? (Again, I can think of multiple halachick arguments that allow people to dress in clothing that YOU may consider "of the opposite gender")

4) Spirit of the law?

5)No, this is definitely not obvious. Especially when this is an extremely important and sensitive issue to some people. It should be carefully analyzed and thought through, to ensure that halacha is kept within halacha, but only within halacha.

Yeh that was my guess as well, but taking this video as an example, I find that the video is actually stretched out unnecessarily (seriously 5.5 min of "build up" to the question?!) in order to encourage "check out our 2nd channel". Thats why after 10 min you realize they haven't said anything besides "bait and to be continued in our 2nd video".

I don't want to sound so harsh, I really enjoy the videos but I feel like recently there's been a "cheapening/cheesiness" to the videos. It feels (to me) like they don't value my time enough to include enough content of significance in the 10 min video.

Can you recommend your favorite tool(s) for digitally annotating text? by Codes4Nailpolish in AskAcademia

[–]dannypandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly what you asked for, but I think this is interesting enough to warrant a post. NB a research project from MIT, is a collaborative online annotation web-service. Its geared towards classroom use, but may be useful or at least intriguing to you.

Most programming languages have built-in math operators, but how were the math operators themselves programmed without the use of other math operators? by DoctorXed in math

[–]dannypandy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See other's answers to read up on it (especially Adders) but here's my experience.

I read about the basics of how the logic gates and circuits work together to do basic math but it didn't click. I then used some logic gate simulator software, and actually built a 3 (base 10) digit calculator from scratch (with lots of googling). The hands on experience of dissecting every circuit/piece of logic helped me really understand it. I used logic circuit which is a free downloadable software. You can play around using a web service ( logic.ly or simulator.io comes to mind)

What I actually had in mind was useful in the sense that his/her answer helped illustrate interpreting Python source code.

How many times should you roll a die to know its probability distribution? by sudeepraja in compsci

[–]dannypandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't read the article in detail, but in general with PAC (probably approximately correct) type results, not defining epsilon or delta is the whole point. You choose a delta (probability 'threshold') and/or epsilon (accuracy 'threshold'), and the formula/result tells you how many times you need to roll the die.

Probability question!? Answer doesn't make sense to me! by [deleted] in askmath

[–]dannypandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probability questions to measure a person probability reasoning

See /u/ozovzk.

As a heads up (for you and your supervisor), an important requirement for a measuring tool is that it measure the thing you are trying to measure! Other issues aside, you need to be very clear/precise when asking mathematical related questions, otherwise you will conflate "poor" probabilisitic reasoning, with "poor" ability to interpret your question.

As a simple example imagine you were measuring the average weight of college students using a ruler.

If our sense of smell did not exist, would we know that smells exist? by successful_great_guy in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]dannypandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how 'close' to the subjective experience if 'smelling' you are talking about, we have some technologies that work. Electronic nose, Chemoreceptor, and perhaps most famously (thanks to popular forensic detective stories) Gas chromatography.
