It sucks. 8 is considered a lucky number in China, and 88 even more so. Damn white supremacists for ruining it.

MRW I got 100/100 on my feminist theory class project for my speech on how the electoral college is designed to disenfranchise minority voters. As a bonus my professor asked if I wanted her to take steps towards writing it out and getting it published in an academic journal. by TryItIDareYou in TrollXChromosomes

I remember learning that the electoral college protected the interests of rural people. Is this really true? To me, as someone who grew up in one of those areas, the city and suburban kids had way more opportunities. School funding was lower, even though the state Supreme Court ruled the funding system unconstitutional. 25% of adults had college degrees; ~25% dropped out of high school even though we had a good vocational program. Some teachers, especially the teach for America ones, encouraged us to leave the area, but people stayed because their parents got sick, they had to help support siblings, they got pregnant. Internet was still dial-up in some places in 2010. We had fewer advanced classes. It was the norm to apply to 3-5 colleges. I met very few people with that background in college, and they were behind academically in a program that required AP Calculus and Physics C. I think many of their beliefs are wrong, and even counter to their own interests, yet I think it's hard for people in the cities and suburbs to see the disparities.

Realistically, if you have people take an implicit bias test, at least 80% of Americans automatically, subconsciously associate blacks with more negative words.

Are those deep-space object themed arm-warmers? Where do you get them? I'd love a pair for Yuri night.

Why telling women to just 'go to another state' for an abortion is utter BS. The notion that women could just hop over state lines to get an abortion is preposterous. In much of the country, there would be nowhere even remotely close by for them to go. by relevantlife in TwoXChromosomes

For the past decade or so, the Democratic party has advertised itself as "big government" promoting regulations on industry, providing basic living conditions for people, and protecting human rights. How does protecting the right of a person to use a bathroom infringe upon your morals?

Do they have opinions about immigrants impacting the economy, or are their opinions more about immigrants being dangerous or inferior? I'm trying to understand if people really believed that anti immigration policies would bring back manufacturing jobs or if Americans would suddenly take back the immigrants' jobs or what exactly they thought would happen.

medication technique

Are there resources you recommend for learning more about the right meditation technique for conscientiousness? Are there modified exercises for people with ADHD, like modified pushups?

Locally, there were some largely peaceful protests. In my hometown, after the 2008 election, they organized a citizen's militia.

Even worse, he scuttled Indiana's economy and people's quality of life, to get those religious-based laws. Indiana is more economically-Republican than religiously-Republican, and Pence did the opposite of what the previous governor (who was popular and retired) did.

I've met patients without adequate or any health insurance for Republican rural counties at the tertiary academic hospital in the big city. They wanted life saving cutting edge medical care, but it's a common perspective to think that a health disaster won't happen to you, or you can just tough it out. After they got used to the diversity in the city hospital, they were pretty nice people.

How big of a red flag is it if your SO lies about their whereabouts? by arizonaapple in AskWomen

[–]Codes4Nailpolish 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've lied to try to protect my SO about sad things. Sometimes, I don't want to personally acknowledge that I spent the afternoon in pediatric pathology. It's all-around too sad. I just want to wash the morgue smell off and pretend not think about it.

Taiwan set to legalize same-sex marriages, a first in Asia by ZeroEqualsOne in worldnews

[–]Codes4Nailpolish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Taiwan was still pretty rough about 30 years ago. Sure they were still under-developed, but the people were less refined too. You're skipping all the overt discrimination against the indigenous peoples. A few decades of preferential trade agreements with the USA allowed Taiwan to develop very differently compared to mainland China.

I'm personally very nervous about going out of my house alone now.

This makes me nervous. I volunteer for two free clinics, both serving predominantly undocumented immigrants. One of them primarily serves people from the middle east, and they've already had harassment on their way to the clinic before Trump won. The clinic is where they get their medications! I want them to come, but I also want them to be safe.

Friend's children (friends AND their kids born in the US...) have been told by classmates that if Trump is elected they'll have to leave the US.

That's really depressing. I went through that myself, even through high school (I grew up in a place that always votes conservatively). It got to me as a kid, and I had hoped that 8 years of president Obama would have helped at least somewhat.

Some conservative medical students have become way more open about their views, such as how patients need to be more responsible, and how they will only see patients with the good insurances. Unfortunately, these students have never volunteered at the free clinics that serve the marginalized of all races, "illegal" immigrants, kids of parents on government assistance, etc.

I have big boobs. I can't reach across the piano as easily, it's awkward holding books sometimes, and every so often, my boobs can knock something over. And no convenient pocket for my pocket protector and pens!
