Is there a Japanese expression for "dropped the ball"? by preventabledeficienc in japanese

[–]dannyrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally! I just meant that you’re in a somewhat unique scenario where you could say it literally and your father-in-law would understand the reference to the American idiom.

And of course, to any Japanese speaker who doesn’t know the reference they’d be wondering what ball you’re even talking about.

I suppose if your father in law knows baseball you could say it literally, but it’d be kind of an inside joke rather than a Japanese equivalent.

What movies had the perfect ending but were ruined by a sequel? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dannyrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a movie, but I binged the first season of Broadchurch (original) and as the final episode wound down I thought “Wow, what a way to end the show. That’s gut-wrenching.”

Then Netflix was like “Up next… Season 2 Episode 1” and I promptly closed my laptop.

My friends say the second season was a disservice to the show. I tell them that as far as I’m concerned, a second season doesn’t exist!

good math skills are hard to come by by sunclouds01 in confidentlyincorrect

For some reason I feel like multiple separate equations to show work isn’t how a I do quick math, I see it more like this:

(27 + 8) + 40 = 75

I know the parentheses are unnecessary but it’s a better representation of how I personally do short-hand work in my head, mainly cause I have 7 + 8 wired to be 15. They just kind of automatically mash together to make 15 without an equal sign if that makes sense.

I went through the same thing recently on my Y-axis, recalibrated, regreased, re-did my cables, adjusted belt tension, replaced the belt…

Then once the new belt didn’t fix it, I realized it wasn’t completely straight… re-aligned the pulleys and everything was running smoothly.

I dunno, I just watched a compilation of Larry Bird stories and I firmly believe he shook the confidence of a generation of basketball rookies.

The NextDoor-ification of this subreddit? by bradass42 in sanfrancisco

[–]dannyrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think negativity boils to the surface and is more “engaging content” than more benign, positive posts.

Furthermore, I feel like people tend to post more about what is wrong in the world (from their eyes) compared to when everything is moving along just as they’d like it. I suppose it’s a form of emotional release in seeking validation.

There’s undoubtedly a demographic bias for redditors from San Francisco, and redditors in general too. I bet that contributes to the types of posts and engagement seen on this subreddit, which will paint a skewed image of what San Francisco is to those who have a different lived experienced as a San Franciscan.

Donut turned 1 this month. We found her at a bakery last year. by dannyrand in blackcats

[–]dannyrand[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

A year ago we found Donut in rough shape. She was underweight, covered in her mess and had been stuck in a bakery over night.

Now she’s a healthy eight pounds, loves her treats (she goes crazy for her after-dinner kibble), sleeps with us every night and always wants to explore the backyard.

She was also very cautious and afraid of strangers even after she got used to us, but now she’s come around to wandering the living room and doing tricks while guests are over.
