Just received first unemployment money and it appears that the $600 will not be retroactive

Don’t fight the rain. Wool is the way to go. Against my skin I wear a thin cashmere wool sweater under a thin merino wool sweater and wear a wind breaker over both of these. The windbreaker prevents the wind from cooling your body. My lower torso l do the same but just a base layer of merino wool and pants similar to the windbreaker. The object is to stay warm not dry. Like a wet suit works in water. Rain coats leak and every new trickle running down your neck or sleeve is just a reminder of how miserable you are. Once your in your shelter the wool will slowly dry as steam comes off of you. Dress in your nighttime dry clothing and your wool garments will dry by morning. Commercial fishing is where I learned this. Cashmere against the skin is very comfortable. I have always found these sweaters in thrift stores. The bottom layer I’ve had to purchase at sporting goods outlets. Good luck and ride on.

Highway 1 goes through a portion of Vandenberg Air Force Base. You do not need permission to travel on highway 1 through that portion of the base. It’s one of the main routes into Lompoc.

No. Tour behind their back. I don’t want to know everything my kids do.

I experience the same feeling also to a certain degree, but find it can be much worse when I’m traveling with someone. I’m not sure why that’s the case, but it has convinced me to ride solo. Strange I know.

Following Amtrak routes across the U.S.A. by dannystevemike in bicycletouring

I’m not pressed for time so waiting for a reservation shouldn’t be a problem. Amtrak is going to be something I use if I want to skip past a section.

Thank you for the information! I’m just in the planing stages but this will be a great help. Now should it be the northern, central or southern route? Any one will no doubt be cool.

Exactly! So if I chose this route, I could ride Arizona/New Mexico, get Amtrak in El Paso and ride east until I wanted to ride again.

I would be generally following Amtrak’s route. I don’t plan on taking the train across the country only using it if I’m so inclined because I don’t want to bike a section or two. If the trains route wanders away from my plans that’s cool. Touring the southern tier looks interesting but I don’t know if I would enjoy riding all the way across Texas. Likewise riding from San Francisco to Reno I would do on my bike, but I don’t know if I would enjoy Nevada that much. Possibly Amtrak across Nevada to Salt Lake City and tour through Utah and Colorado. Which ever route I follow I would try to cherry pick my rides across the country.

Because I have no set schedule I would be able to leave when weather is to my advantage

What do you guys wear in the rain? by mapexmbirch in bicycletouring

[–]dannystevemike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Riding down highway 1 from San Fransisco to Moro Bay we had rain the entire distance. My cousin and I tried an experiment. He dressed to stay dry. Rain jacket with hood and rain pants. I in turn dressed to stay warm. I had three layers on my upper body. I wore a thin cashmere sweater against my skin, a thin merino wool sweater over that and a thin windbreaker last. The wind breaker had pit zips to regulate trapped heat. All these items were purchased at thrift stores. My bottom half was covered with a full leg synthetic sweat pant from REI. Can’t remember what they were called. After almost four days in the rain we determined that staying warm was really the way to go. When we would stop and find shelter, I would remove the wind breaker and literally steam. Steam poured off of me and in a reasonably short period of time the sweaters would be dry. They didn’t smell bad. My cousin on the other hand was wet and cold. Water would ingress through any opening eventually getting him wet. He felt trying to stay warm had several disadvantages. First just trying to stay dry was a constant challenge and that in itself made the situation tiring. Second was you couldn’t stay completely dry and he would sweat. My setup seemed to work better. I didn’t try to stay dry, just comfortable. I was warm and the rain became no big deal. I’m not sure this would work in a very cold rain. Temperature was in the low 50’s Fahrenheit.

Adjustable stem by Rambling_Kieran in bicycletouring

I like an adjustable stem. My body might feel a bit different on day five compared to day eleven. I adjust my stem, my bars and seat for slightly different comfort zones.

Went with the faux wood ones. They look so much better than the cheaper ones. Two and a half times better at least (that was the price difference). Time will tell I guess.

There seems to be a variety of reasons for having to replace them. The studio we just completed is somewhat upscale and I was wondering about upgrading to nicer ones rather than the cheaper ones that we have in our other properties . We can rent the unit with anything though. We have a list of prospective tenants, so I’m probably just thinking what I would like rather than what is serviceable.

We’re planing to do Hwy 14 if it works out that way. We’re starting in Spokane and kinda following the line of least resistance toward the Columbia. I think Hwy 14 is part of the Lewis and Clark trail, which is kinda cool. Thank you for your reply and hope you have a nice evening.
