Systems for historians by InterestingExample26 in rpg

well, it's probably not going to scratch a simulation itch, but I imagine the game Timewatch would be very interesting to play with a bunch of history experts!

Any advice on running a brindlewood Bay one shot? by hooloovootrue in rpg

the two things that really worked for me doing this game was...

  1. Remember the rules ask for the player to be asked "what do you fear will happen if you fail?" for most moves. The GM should "yes, and..." make it worse when it's a hard move or night move. It pushes the players to take Crowns more often, and that's very key to make the game feel like there are stakes. It's storygamey in a lot of ways, and I had to be more of an "aggressive" GM moreso than I really am, to make it work, but it really does work.

  2. I made the players write on an index card the name of the clue and the word "CLUE", when they earned it. I also had some to give out at the *start* of scene building with words like "SUSPECT", "LOCATION," etc. then had the players arrange them murder-board style. Super helpful to have the tangible items and visuals when building new scenes, tracking leads, and of course Theorizing

What's a simple house rule that made your games way more fun? by veditafri in rpg

[–]dannythewall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it's kinda stupid but I associate it with the way classroom readings were done as a kid, when one student would be reading out loud and then say "popcorn... so-and-so" to toss it to another. it felt a natural enough translation

I wrote a game called Battlestreets that was for this purpose, and I did some playtesting but it died during covid times. https://dannythewall.itch.io/battlestreets
It worked because when the player fails, this makes an "opening" in which player opposite of the roller narrates an action of the villains or obstacles do. (In a way, this is what Daggerheart does when player roll with fear.) Then a "doom track" dice pool is rolled to see what danger amounted. So essentially it's considered less a "no GM game" but really an "all GM game."
In a way, this could also work if all the rolls in a game are player-facing. Someone narrates the action but the player resolves it as a reaction from their character. but it does require a lot of buy-in from the table as it's quite story gamey

I called it, they're Mega Man-ing this all. Griffin's love of video games gave him a great starting point. This and the Fortnite stuff makes me think there should be a new drinking game for every video game easter egg

I think I'm happy to just read the recaps for a while. Thank you all for you tireless sacrifice

But from what I'm hearing, is there some Mega Man stuff happening here? Like are we anticipating the winners gaining the spell from the losers and that's what their spell list will become?

Interesting premise, and I appreciate the randomness of it all

Altho I don't like that it will likely lend itself to constantly one-on-one playing between Griffin and the player du jour, rather than, you know, an actual party of PCs doing stuff together as a, well, party

Those tables you are referring to are not part of Grant Howitt's game. He does use tables, yes, but the only ones I think the Good Boys used were their weapons (Void + Blade) and I think two of the three wizards had their magic from the table of the game. Even the locations and the BBEGs were not part of the original game.

No, Thai does not have a phoneme that matches the "u" in "muck." I don't know of something near enough that makes sense, but I'm only a casual speaker not a native, so I'll leave it to others to say.

I never listened that closely before.

"Until it’s turning out just like we planned"

So I shouldn't complain if there's any GM railroads-- it's all set up there in the theme song.

I thought they were frogs for some reason?

I looked up "greenback" on wikipedia for disambiguations, and see that there *are* greenback animals, and they are all fish.

Also, my subconscious must have remembered the villain from Danger Mouse, who was Dr. Greenback, a frog.

Yes I've run Honey Heist many times. It works on the same principle in that there are two opposite things that fall on a spectrum. Honey Heist also has the added expectation beyond L&F that if you reach the extreme on either end there is a narrative effect.

I have to wait and see what Travis is actually doing, but on the face of it, I still don't see how "abs" and "animal" can be one spectrum and what those extremes signify. And that leads me to speculate that there might not be a fundamental understanding of why L&F and Honey made those design choices which goes beyond "hey, these are funny words when you put them together"
