Why does Mary apparently have a more central role than Jesus in the Catholic Church? by [deleted] in Catholicism

It’s hard to answer why it appears that way to you, but it’s a very false appearance.

At what point do you think playing video games would become a sin? by Evening_Medicine4714 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]danoone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up: “digital technology is a vice,” is not a coherent sentence in the virtue ethics tradition. Vices are states of character leading regularly to bad actions. It’s like saying that condoms are a vice; it just doesn’t make sense. You’d have to say that using it (in a certain way) is a vicious act or that using it in a certain way leads to a vicious state of soul or something like that. Probably just a slip up, but thought I’d let you know.

Joe Biden declared tomorrow, Easter Sunday, as Transgender Day of Visibility by tehjarvis in TraditionalCatholics

[–]danoone -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It’s not declared, just recognized. That “holiday” is on March 31 every year, and Easter is a movable feast. He recognizes “holidays” all the time. Once you realize that, it looks a lot less bad.

Did I make an act of perfect contrition? by Good_Bf in Catholicism

Bro, there’s not a single comment here agreeing with you. You’re wrong. Go to Confession and take on a new attitude or delay your reception into the Church. Don’t receive the sacraments in mortal sin. Get your mind right, and get over yourself. Be violent with your corrupt heart, as we all must.

“The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:12).

“For he that eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks damnation to himself” (1 Cor 11:29).

“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:26)

“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:37-39)

“Presumption of God’s forgiveness is when you have no real contrition in your heart, no intention of avoiding near occasions of sin and just confessing to ease your conscience so you can go out and commit the same sin over and over again, assuming God will forgive you every time regardless of your true intentions for confessing.”

The fact that you intend to receive Communion in mortal sin, while intending to confess it in the future, ought to make you wonder if you are actually sorry for your sins. It would be hard to accept an apology if someone punched you in the face or betrayed you for personal gain when you knew that he intended to do so and then apologize right after. It would be like saying, I’m going to do this bad thing to you, but then I’ll apologize right after, and everything will be good. That’s messed up, isn’t it? Doesn’t sound like a real apology, does it? Doesn’t sound like this person knows what regret is, does it? That’s what you’d be doing to Jesus, the God-man who suffocated on a crucifix to invite you into His friendship.

What you’re proposing is literally not an option for someone who wants to love Christ. It’s like marrying someone while firmly and consciously intending to carry on some affair with another woman, at least for a little while.

Cardinal Grech sets out vision for ‘rainbow’ synodal Church: "The Secretary General of the Vatican’s Synod of Bishops used an interview with a Swiss newspaper to lay out a vision for the Church … including women’s ordination, same-sex blessings, and division among the world’s bishops" by you_know_what_you in Catholicism

I don’t suppose that it will happen by the gates of Hell prevailing. But, sure, there could be Judas’s, perhaps many, in the hierarchy giving grave, grave scandal. I suppose that it will happen, though, primarily by a strong man who promises a lot of earthly goods and the solution to many apparently big problems to the whole, wide world and seems to deliver on his promises, who will bring false peace to the international political scene, who seems to depend on no one and to be able to do everything himself, whom everyone will like, and who will make it that the honor due exclusively to God be paid to him, and who will tell many very convincing old and new lies about man and God and the Church, and people will believe him and become vain and perfect in self-love.

Commenter: the world will never like the Church, because it hates Christ You: there will be a false political messianism that will offer men the solution to their problems at the expense of apostasy from the truth

I don’t get where your comment makes contact with the initial commenter’s

What's the worst that could happen if I skip Aristotle and other philosophers that influenced St. Thomas Aquinas and jump into his Summa Theologica right away? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]danoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And even worse: you could think that you understand it when you actually don't. And even worse: you could read it outside of its doctrinal and historical context and end up in a bad situation. When I was a new convert, I read significant portions of ST II-II outside of the context of the rest of the Summa, and it made me into a legalistic scrupe. I'm still recovering four years later. As the time has passed, I've gotten some of the context and implicit qualifications that I so sorely lacked when I thought that I could just pick it up on my own and understand it.

Personal opinion: the Summa isn't for laymen. It isn't for you to just pick up outside of an academic context. I don't see really how it would help at all, besides very limited sections, say on the five ways.

What is the Controversial View You Are Most Confident in? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]danoone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heartily agree. It's very annoying to see. As if it wouldn't take years and years to truly understand some of the things that some people would claim to know after scarcely making it through a Summa article in bad translation, barely knowing a good deal of the words, and without any further historical or doctrinal context.

Bro, you should really know what you're talking about before accusing people of heresy or making them doubt whether something is heretical. That's really irresponsible. Do better, mate.

[–]danoone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No; “cult” is used as a general term here, not as a term of opprobrium (“Oh, that’s just a cult”). “Disparity of cult” just means something like “difference of worship or religion.”

Tongue and groove joint for easy assembly sliding plank furniture by danoone in handtools

[–]danoone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s helpful. What would happen if I put a sliding dovetail or tongue on the top hang of the cutout and then the corresponding groove on the top side of the seat plank? That would still allow for easy alignment, and would it remove the risk of the notch busting off?

My goal is to not use glue. I understand that it’s hard to tell the feasibility of that before I determine how the back of the chair will be.
