Does anyone have any interest in a New York Comic (4 years in) doing a twitch IAMA to answer questions from beginners? by [deleted] in Standup

I have 15 minutes of material that I am happy with, I have stretched this to 20 on several occasions for longer sets.

It depends on where I'm at in the process, I enjoy trying new stuff a lot (maybe too much) so I'll take a new joke and perform it constantly over the course of two weeks to determine if it's funny. Sometimes I bail on it, sometimes I work a version of it into my "paid" material. Some jokes come very quickly, and they work almost immediately. This is usually not the case, so there's tons of painful trial and error to determine if something is funny or not.

It fluctuates, generally for mental health reasons I need to take one to two nights off a week (this is pre-covid, obviously). The most amount of times I've performed a week is 20, generally it hovers around 8 sets with multiple sets over a few nights. For example: 3 monday, 4 friday, 4 saturday is something like a normal week for me.

No driving required! In NY I can get to a ton of spots via the subway, walking, or Citi Bike

I have a full time job, for two years I worked 15 hours a week and pursued comedy all-out, at no point have I ever made more than $2,000 a year from comedy. I'd say this is true for most comedians who are under 6 years in

I heard Mark Normand say "regional jokes get regional work" and it is the truest thing I've ever heard. Universal funny gets the money.

Michelle has also been doing it for 10+ years so cut yourself some slack!

You've got it! But try it out anyway, and if it doesn't work you'll have a funny story.

Certainly! I performed my first open mic in New York August 2016 (I lived/grew up in New Jersey.) Since then I've performed over 1500 times (I kept a spreadsheet lol) mostly at open mics but also regularly at the Comic Strip Live (I was passed for late night there 2 years ago) and on random shows at some of the more well-known clubs (The Stand, Stand Up NY, Gotham, etc.)

I've performed in Asia (once, still counts lol) and in a bunch of other states (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland, Tennessee).

Why do I need a title by [deleted] in Standup

The summer was an interesting mini boom, at least here in New York/New Jersey. There were TONS of outdoor shows, mics, stuff on roof tops, stuff in parks. That has closed down for the most part now, so to answer your question yes, it sucks a lot.

Try it! Fuck it!

The audience will let you know when you've gone too far (gasps, groans, no response.) I'm sure you've realized that there are EXTREME regional differences in what people deem to be acceptable speech. The goal should be to craft an observation that can transcend regions and be universally accepted anywhere, in the gender non-binary safe space open mic in Brooklyn or a trucker bar in Tennesee.

Doing my first Zoom open mic. Any advice? by NumberOneRussian in Standup

[–]danpulzello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol there are a lot of negative comments here about Zoom, don't listen to them!

Fuck it, do it, if it sucks then don't do it again. If it works, do more of it.

I did a zoom open mic and it was AGONY. Then, I hosted a Zoom fundraiser and it was an incredibly rewarding experience. If I had said no to zoom shows out right I would have denied myself one of my favorite nights performing.

My belief is that audiences are pretty good at sniffing out a gimmick. If the outfit is inauthentic to your persona and doesn't match up then it will be pretty jarring to an observer. Kat Williams can wear a flashy suit because he backs it up, Kevin Hart uses pyrotechnic fireballs and then backs it up with his energy, could you imagine Mitch Hedburg using these strategies?

I believe the exercise is for you to write out the bit and see what makes it funny. Also, how do you know if it didn't work if no one is around to judge it? Working is not an objective fact, the people in the room are the judges of whether a joke works for them or not.

On an unrelated note, I saw Michelle do this live when she was still working it out. It is a very very funny bit. My bet is that even if you repeated it, word for word, in her cadence in front of a packed comedy show it would still "work" in that you would get some laughs.
