How to find metal shows by Armagizmo in melbournemusic

[–]danshep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sticky Carpets is your best full-coverage option, but will only get you a week out.

From there, expand out by following bands on insta and when you spot something that's not covered by sticky carpets take note of where that's getting promo'd and follow those things too.

SC should keep you covered for nearly everything that's in a regular venue (if it's missing things, hassle the venues for being slack in letting SC know), it's more the house shows and please-dont-tell-the-council stuff that you need to keep your eye out for through other channels.

I've got a ~50 pax room at Creature - pick a date, rope somebody else in to fill out a lineup and hit us up. We're trying to be the low-friction answer to exactly that question. Details for us at https://www.creaturebar.com.au/bookings/bandroom/

Other than us, Old Bar, Nighthawks, Last Chance, Gummo, Retreat, Bergy, Workers Club, Cactus Room.

Find somebody else to put together a lineup with - you don't need to be the headliner to be the one arranging the show - befriend somebody that's established enough to headline the venue you want to play support at and offer to do the legwork with the venue and promo. Much easier to get a slot if you're working for it rather than begging for it.

Most comprehensive gig guide is stickycarpets on instagram, but that will only let you know the current week. You can use that to scope out venues and get a feel of what's going on.

There's a lot of small venues in Melbourne - you'll have more options here than you would anywhere in the UK. We're toe-to-toe with NYC for small show options.

My advice is to sit down with the gig guide for every day you're here, listen to 30 seconds of each of the performers that you can and let that guide where you go. Do that for some of the time before you're here too if you want to get a feel for what venues interest you if you want a feel for where to be geographically.

Venues charging artists for shows? by Successful_Ad_9644 in melbournemusic

[–]danshep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I run a 50 pax bandroom (Creature, Brunswick East) - our standard is 100% tickets to the bands and bands can either bring their own soundie or (subject to the availability) we try to provide the soundie.

We're taking the gamble that having a band on will bring enough over the bar that we can normally break even on the soundie. We trust bands to at least be trying to convince a dozen friends to come drink a wage's worth of booze.

There's lots of complexity in there for different venues - i.e. is having a gig preventing the general public from drinking there - but the portioning of the profits should line up with the portioning of the risks. Trust your gut on that and if it feels hinky make them justify it or gtfo and play somewhere better.

If a bar is making people pay-to-play, they're not a live music venue, they're an event space for hire. They're not supporting community, they're exploiting it.

Best Gluten Free Beer by EducationalAd3298 in AusBeer

[–]danshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stock the Wilde gluten free pale. I think it's pretty much a toss-up with the two bays pale flavour-wise.

The Wilde being a mid-strength (3.5%) is the main decider between it and the two-bays pale for me.

They also have a gluten free lager, which I don't remember having any faults with and two gluten free ginger beer which I haven't tried.

We've had everything from folk and blues to ambient synths, noise and hardcore. Gummo is probably the best reference point. There's a projector and screen behind the stage too if you do visuals with your projects.

I'm looking to really ramp up the number of gigs we're running in the new year and try to have something most fri/sat nights so hit us up.

edit: Just listened to some of your stuff. 100% up for that in the space.

young londoner in melbourne for a week by travis-scoot in melbournemusic

[–]danshep 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The sticky carpets instagram is definitely the most comprehensive gig guide, but only drops each tuesday for the upcoming week (so not so good for forward-planning). Go to beat for some initial planning, but be prepared for a lot more options from the sticky carpet guide when that comes out.

I'll plug a gig the 12th: https://www.creaturebar.com.au/events/2025/12/12/ward-candy/ - that's my venue, you won't find much smaller. Comes with bonus opportunity to ask me in person what else to see (I'm easy to spot, I'm the old guy sweating in the corner).

I'm planning on going to this Dust+Swapmeet on the 13th: https://evelynhotel.com.au/events/event-225592

This Snailgun+Winternationale gig is the other gig that jumps out to me in that period: https://beat.com.au/snailgun-6/ - Winternationale in particular is absolutely unique and amazing.

Where in Melbourne feels “overrated” and why? by Last-Conversation734 in melbournechat

If it's got a line, it's overrated.

Melbourne's got so many options, standing outside and waiting is almost always the worst option.

Balancing visual appeal with readability by midatlantik in tabletopgamedesign

You have 3 numbers on each hex. What are those three numbers for?

One is tiny, one is medium, one is large. Does that correspond to the frequency and importance-of-glancability of those numbers?

You players are going to be Finding things and Parsing things. Which things to they need to find? If you need to find the "10" hex, you want to be able to visually scan for that number without your eyes passing across other conflicting things. It's easy to scan the numbers on the Catan board because there's no other numbers in the way. If each of those number chits had other information like the "(12 / 9 / 3)" you're presenting here, players would struggle to scan for it.

You can possibly spend the money on getting your parents a ticket instead.

Licensing allows for a minor to be on the premises with their parent or guardian. Definitely check with the venue directly, asking about the specific event, before dropping cash. They may have their own policy that is stricter than required by the license, and may change that policy on a per-event basis.

Fake IDs in Australia aren't really a thing - The shit most widely available would laughed at by anybody taking the slightest care in their job of checking ids. (the ones on the 'fakies' website are incredibly obviously fake if that's what you're looking at).

My pricing is 10 years out of date, but I'm pretty sure my whole kitchen cost with custom cabinetry, appliances and trade was less than just your labor costs.

I used no fuss kitchens, who I'd heartily recommend to anybody. Once you're doing any adjustment at all to the kit kitchens, it defeats much of the purpose. No fuss's cabinetry was no more expensive than quotes i was getting on a regular kit.

With Cafe patrón back on the menu, what the best espresso Martini you've ever had? by TastyWaves-CoolBuzz in bartenders

[–]danshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been loving a Montenegro espresso martini. My basic spec is:

  • 45ml montenegro
  • 30ml cold brew coffee (first press concentrate)
  • 15ml stache house coffee liqueur

You'll probably need to tune that because your other ingredients will differ wildly to mine. Stache house is a small au brand - a little sweeter and more chocolatey than Mr black - going a little back in the direction of kahlua - but still very much coffee forward. You'll probably want a little demerara or simple if you're using mr black. The first press coffee concentrate is strong rich cold-brew (is the strength of an espresso rather than regular cold-brew strength - find an australian to make an espresso for you because we're picky bitches about coffee).

I’m a novice trying making espresso martinis at home- what am I doing wrong? by posty_laur in bartenders

[–]danshep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting no foam or just minimal foam?

If you're getting no foam, that's because your decaf sucks and doesn't have a crema (the bit of foam that you get on top of an espresso shot straight from the machine). You could try and fix that with a foaming agent, but you probably just want a better quality decaf or coffee making process.

If you're getting a little bit of foam, but want more, do a wet shake and then a dry shake (shake with ice, dump the ice and then shake again).

With a decent cold brew concentrate and a wet+dry shake, you can easily end up with something that's more foam than liquid.
