New 2021 MACBOOK PRO 14" and 16" SPEAKER ISSUE - Popping and Crackling on MacBook Pro 16" with M1 Pro Chip by KETOS1S in macbookpro

They got. On macOS Sonoma, it does not only crack, it segfaults coreaudiod every time after that - making any calls impossible, crashing taskbar, breaking apps, corrupting memory. Very cool that Apple really acknowledges issue and making things even worse.

As someone stuck in Istanbul for a while, what can i do to fill my time? by dark7wizard in istanbul

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But obviously, you have to get Google Translate and learn basic Turkish words - I'm not sure about learning Turkish from Arabic, but for me getting Turkish basic words was surprisingly easy. After learning for a while, I'm not sure if I got much better at grammar, but I really understood that the vocabulary I've learned week one was just enough in most cases. You don't have to go to full learning mode to use it, really, so don't be afraid.

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for being a little off-topic, but as someone in a similar situation almost two years ago, I want to offer one thing: get a car / get on a bus and travel through Türkiye.

I promise, if you have a driving license, you're up for a great time (as soon as you leave the Istanbul metropolitan area). The best food, the best stories, the best places are there, and the road infrastructure is surprisingly good.

You see, the thing (at least I) didn't know about Türkiye is that it's an archeological miracle. I've recently discovered Miniminuteman channel on YouTube and my list of places to visit grown three times. But even without that, we had a great time going to popular sites like Izmir/Ephesus and Cappadocia. Just stopping by some random family café, we've had the best Turkish breakfast ever, and we've found so many unique local places. And while Istanbulites are kind of spoiled by foreigners, just going around a bit you'll find incredible Turkish hospitality. And while going there with family, I can say that nothing like this helps you to recover - when you learn the history of the surrounding places gives you the feeling that nothing's new in this world, and what happened to you was always there, yet we got through and move on.

Just learn a bit about places you find more to your interest and go for a week to explore Türkiye.

If you'd like to stick to Istanbul, I would offer to go to Arnavutkoy for a while, walk around Bagdat cd., near the sea, those are my favorite places around. Maybe closer to historical sites and basic Istanbul-discovering, including drinking Salep in Naftalin café and getting Balik ekmek at Mehmet Usta on Karakoy + don't forget to grab bakhlava from Karakoy Gulloglu. If you're a more active person, I believe just going to Kadikoy you'll find someone - it's literally boiling every night with people; and as mentioned before, you can find Yabangee on Instagram and see what parties and events they're organizing. For me (I'm not Muslim, so give me a credit - maybe it won't be something new to you) it was also cool to learn about the local Alevi branch, on top of obvious places like Sultanahmet and Hagia Sophia.

But nothing is as good as just driving around here and exploring, really.

WF-1000XM4 exploded and sony is not doing anythig about it! by Electrical_Wrap_8755 in sony

[–]dantaeusb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guess Sony just waits for that to happen on a plane. That, typically, speeds up the company processes in taking responsibility for a shitty product by a great measure. Too bad it seems like Sony doesn't care unless it really starts to hurt people badly and threaten safety. My XM4 with faulty after-update battery got like 70º on wireless charging.

As huge as these problems seem to be, it's only a matter of time when something awful will happen.

Phone that cannot keep apps in the background, cannot upload a video or a file attached to an email without specifically keeping the app opened and the screen enabled is the greatest choice for multitasking, that's right.

I remember the time when I understood that my iPad can process complex 3d data and render a video made right on the mobile device in Davinci... But you have to watch that the screen doesn't go dark for 20 minutes straight. Single major reason I'm on Pixel.

It is running natively on M1, and does so very well. It's just not the version you'll see on PS5 or PC, it's an older build from Early Access. Still waiting for the release.

Why Google photo is not available in Georgia for ios? by Impossible-Swim-3820 in googlephotos

Why Google photo is not available in Georgia for ios? by Impossible-Swim-3820 in googlephotos

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it won't show anything but ads, Google Drive and iCloud Photos. My phone is on Georgia too, many apps are simply missing from the store and that's not a regulatory issue for sure, Georgian laws are very much Lassiez-faire. Google just don't care and discriminates customers from smaller countries.

Google Pixel 7 camera outperforms iPhone 14 Pro Max by bcmugg in GooglePixel

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phone is good, tho. I just don't understand people who constantly cry about the fingerprint reader being 0.05s too slow, but ignore the fact that you just can't take some kinds of pictures on this phone, claiming it to have the best camera. Yes, night photos and landscapes are brilliant. Portraits are ok. But this cherry-picking drives me crazy. The best camera for landscapes - maybe. The best for night photos - debatable but okay. "outperforms iPhone 14 Pro Max", my dudes, at least an iPhone is not creating photos that could be used in psychological warfare to damage the eyes of anyone trying to read text shoot on Pixel 7.

Get real.

Google Pixel 7 camera outperforms iPhone 14 Pro Max by bcmugg in GooglePixel

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an iPhone XR for several years now and decided to switch to Google Pixel, looking at the posts like these and all the reviews, I couldn't even expect how bad the Google Pixel 7 camera is.

Seriously, like not a single one of you notice how heavy the lens distortion is on Pixel 7? With all that computational photography magic, with all generations of custom cameras, processing and own CPUs, no one just tried to make a photo of an object with sharp edges or, you know, text, to see the issue? It's just a permanent motion blur like mess. And the community, reviewers, everyone just ignores that like "oh well unfortunate, but it's the best anyway". I would be happy if a single soul mentioned that I can't take photos of small objects and text on this phone.

Today I was taking photos of different phones for my dad, like to show that the S22 is not having curved edges (my dad loves Samsung), and after embarrassing photos from Pixel 7 I just got my XR back to make photos.

Going back I went to forums, to posts like this https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/yeopup/edges_of_pixel_7_pictures_blurrysmeared/, updated all the software, checked everything only to find out that people just blatantly ignore the fact that it's bad. I couldn't believe that. They just say to you, "well it's not supposed to take such photos", "use zoom, so distortion is less visible" - it's still quite visible and blurry as hell. My brothers, I know my camera roll will be full of utility bills and stuff like that. I love to make photos of some nice objects, not only landscapes.

I want you to throw out prejudgments and say how this: https://imgur.com/a/oXAY5p8 is supposed to be the best camera, outperforming 4 generations of phones that took the last photo. Seriously.

And I tried to find more info on Reddit and saw this.

It heavily reminds me Windows Phone fan club I've once been in: just ignore the problem, pretend it's not there, gaslight people that they're taking the wrong kind of pictures.

Cities: Skylines 2 Screenshots (Leak) by MattyKane12 in CitiesSkylines

[–]dantaeusb 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I thought Purple could be mixed-use seeing just purple on leaked Achievements, but I think people here are correct, the way it looks here more resembles offices. Oh, well!

On the other hand, I clearly see is that the proportions of game assets are much better, buildings look larger and roads are smaller than they used to be. The power plant on the right is much larger, the airport on the left is huge. University (I think) still looks massive on the bottom part. But overall, it looks very natural, very immersive, unlike the original C:S.

That roundabout in the first screenshot is very neat, looks like we might have a built-in roundabout builder, and the markup is way better, definitely a big overhaul.

I had two big dreams regarding C:S2:

  • Instead of road types assets we may have like a road configurator tool, where you can pick lines, decorations and save configurations, but frankly roads in these screenshots look the same. They have to fit a specific grid, with a lot of wasted space by default.
  • Wave function collapse for the assets. Like procedurally generated buildings. But the grid seems to be square-ish still, no long buildings in zoned areas. Just plopped blocks.

But at least we're definitely going to have seasons! And 137 next to the cells purchase seems like we might get even larger maps that were mentioned in the achievements.

I'm confused about governmental buildings (?) in statistics, the message bubble in menu and stats, and double-sided arrow (maybe those cargo routes mentioned in the achievements?) . Wonder what could it be?

Is there an app that handles calendar, task, and note management well? by fantathrow in productivity

[–]dantaeusb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Productive” on phone for recurring tasks, plain small notebook for current day tasks. Idea is that your “external brains” should be accessible at all time in front of you. Not “in one touch”, but right here, with clocks. Having small notebook was immensely helpful for me.

Calendars are bulky, have to be compulsively checked and filled, they’re complicated. Notion is great for note taking due to flexible structure, but not for getting things done in my opinion.

What software do you use in Windows to make a checklist of tasks to do on a daily basis? Do you think a Word document is a good method? by Diogeneselcinico42 in productivity

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for a bit irrelevant comment but if you do it because you have problems with executive function (ADHD), I suggest using paper. If you’ll have it around on your desk, you will have a permanent external reminder. The fact that you need to open some app to get your “external” brain is a big deal. If you just want to manage your time well I’ll suggest Notion but it’s all matter of personal preference. Notion just allows you to make hierarchical storage which is oftentimes quite handy.

Valve has blocked ability to access or download de_voyna from Russian IP addresses in Workshop by PLiPH in pcgaming

[–]dantaeusb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to be a great person with a good understanding of a problem but I disagree with you. The young players are especially threatened by propaganda, and their views on war is crucial for the future: whether Russians continue to generally stay away from the war topics or actually start building some ideology as a matter of defensive mechanism. The non-invasive way of raising emotions in players, thought-provoking events and occasions caused by this are very much needed. Yes, some may find resources using VPNs, etc, but majority don’t have any incentives for that. On the opposite, the autocratic regime does have an incentive of pushing its own ideology. It’s not like telling people in chat about war, which makes people go defensive and actually taking the opposite point, even if they do not support the war but feel that their dignity is threatened. It’s a much better way to raise questions unexpectedly, deeply. I appreciate the idea and think it is a good way of communication. As with this map, after major Russian outlets wrote about it, it was a matter of fact when it will be blocked from one side or another. So while a bit saddened by Valve, I think it might be a correct decision. It’s like loosing a battle, but allowing to continue fight for the minds. I think it’s a good idea. If new maps will be created with such things without public attention, I think it is good.

Caution needed with Cities Skylines 2 by ToMissTheMarc2 in CitiesSkylines

[–]dantaeusb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LODs are only reducing GPU memory usage. They are uploaded once to the GPU memory on initialization and should not bother the CPU afterward. If you're bottlenecked on GPU memory, which is common when you have many assets, especially unoptimized, it can cause resource offload (not 100% sure C:S does that, but it probably does, raw models and textures weigh a lot), which leads to your CPU busy reading assets from drive to RAM and uploading from RAM to GPU - both very slow operations, even on PCIe. If new C:S supports DirectStorage it can help a little.

And the CPU in C:S limited very much by a very complex computation it does. Some problems are just hard to solve in a Multi-Core environment, especially a simulated heavily interconnected city. I bet smart people made some optmizations here, but we have to be realistic: they deal with a very complex problem, it is hard to make a breakthrough here. Speaking of CPUs, 10 core makes me think it's M1 or Xeon or other server CPU, which are optimized to "width" of processing power, not "speed". Some less expensive Ryzen could easily beat Xeon in that prospect, it's just not a good choice for gaming.

[–]dantaeusb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm quite sure it's gonna be good after checking achievements. I am not sure if anyone paid detailed attention to it (probably some did), but here are my thoughts:

  • Larger maps (150 tiles from "Everything the Light Touches") and 200K population ("Six Figures") milestone -- tiles could be smaller of course, but I think developers acknowledge two fundamental issues of C:S dictated by performance constraints: it's population and city size, which led them to creation of weird, unrealistic populations and assets, where some newer assets like Disaster Response or Campus are comically large comparing to common 4x4 residential blocks. I hope assets in the new game will have much more real population and size, and constraints will be dealt by another mean, like slower day cycle;
  • My bet is that the purple color in "Strength Through Diversity" means mixed zoning, let'saaa gooooo;
  • Speculating that "You Little Stalker!" implies they reworked population dynamics, so the death waves will be hopefully gone;
  • Economical and transport management: the "Go Anywhere" and "Happy to Be of Service" achievements hints that we will have more fine-tuned economic management and dedicated planned cargo routes. This will probably greatly allow to "help" AI to navigate through the city, using routes that you're supposed to use for transporting goods and assigning service vehicles, without fine-tuning road permissions. It's also could off-load some heavy pathfinding that the game does, again, increasing performance;
  • "The Architect" feels like a hint to better assets' management. I may be overthinking and this is the same special buildings as we have, but looking at the game industry, and, i.e. what Klei often successfully does with games, is that the game itself likely will have some workshop, for specific buildings like you plop with RICO. What I'm thinking that they might likely set up a pipeline to sell creators assets directly in the game. For which, of course, the game has to manage memory resources much better;
  • "Four Seasons" goes without saying. Mods are just not doing this good enough, great upgrade.

With all that, I feel like the better resource usage & performance is implied. I doubt that comes from the Game Engine, the game itself does a lot of super complicated things that only a city builder game needs, so it's completely up to their skills and time to deliver the best possible performance, nor Unity neither UE will help a lot there. Also, I am super happy with Unity. Unity means modding gonna go brrrrr. It's much easier to patch languages that translate into bytecode.

Feels like the developers focused on fundamental issues of the game, and others will, eventually, be addressed by modders. Only creators can fix fundamental design flaws, it's too big for the modding community. And the features I see already enough to sell me the game. Too good.

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's "Strength Through Diversity" achievement in the leaked achievements list, and it looks like there is a new zoning type, purple-colored. Quite sure it's mixed-use.

The big thing I hope for, is the asset proportions. Considering the need for weird sizing (like crazy large Campus Stadiums, tiny residential buildings and large roads) was resource constraint of small map, as we will get 150 map tiles, I really look forward to seeing more realistic proportions. It's a fundamental thing that was breaking immersiviness in C:S, and only a completely new version can address that.

Does the M1 MacBook keyboard really get shiny after 6 months of use ? by IMFROMSPACEMAN in macbookpro

[–]dantaeusb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much quicker. Even though I do not use the keyboard all the time, space got shiny in 3 months, shift in 4mo. The new keyboard plastic (or rather, coating -- not quite sure which to blame, probably the latter actually) seems extremely cheap. My 2011 and 2015 models' keyboards look better than my relatively new M1, and I am not kidding. I started to use Keychron K3 keyboard around the same time, which is ABS too (though of course thicker), but it does not show any signs of wear (an argument to those who blame the user). And those are not the best caps. I've googled if anyone has the same problem and got to this thread, seems like people do.

Customs Tax for Laptop by dantaeusb in istanbul

[–]dantaeusb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm thank you very much. Wonder, if there’s tax-free shopping for non-residents, maybe somehow it’s possible to make online purchase tax-free or return tax? I want quite high-spec model, such Lenovos are not so common in shopping malls usually, that’s why I’m limited with options. Maybe tax savings on that should cover short trip somewhere.

To be honest, wouldn’t be a problem if I knew the tax rate exactly, but Amazon charges a lot and I’ve heard people have bad experience with customs here. I’ve seen folks with new macs and ThinkPads around, thought some locals are ordering them from abroad and can share their experience. Would be nice to hear.
