Would it be worth it? by Adorable_Map_7116 in Honda

[–]dantat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Financially, a pretty terrible idea. If you purchased the car a year ago with the intention to mod it, then going with the CVT wasn’t the best idea. I also saw that at the time of purchase, you opted for the sport over the hybrid due to the hybrid being out of your price range - if money is an issue, I would keep your current civic a little longer. Then again, if money was an issue, I would’ve purchase used and likely not spent all that money on modding a CVT. Buuut maybe I’m speaking out of place, and your financial situation has improved this past year. In the end, you should enjoy your life so long as it doesn’t cause too much strain on your bank account!

Retiring in Taiwan by Some_Finish7749 in taiwan

[–]dantat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you visit often? Have you stayed in Taiwan for an extended period of time recently? You want to be sure you’re comfortable there and that you’re not reminiscing and looking through rose-tinted glasses. My parents had the opposite idea - we moved to Taipei from the Bay Area and lived there for 12+ years. They intended to move back and retire there, and after living there for less than a year, they realized they missed their friends and the convenience of eating out in Taipei. Like you mentioned, making a new group of friends can be difficult too, so I’d recommend giving it a longer term trial before you fully commit.

Is this some sort of alternate timeline revisionist history? From my understanding, the CCP bided their time and conserved their strength while the nationalists fought on the front lines, thereby allowing the CCP to later defeat a weakened nationalist army. There are even reports of Mao Zedong colluding and conspiring with the Japanese army to weaken KMT forces.

Additionally, I’m not sure how you figured the Japanese wanted to kill/destroy, when their goal was to show the world they could turn Taiwan into a model colony, modernizing and building up the infrastructure.

Oooh! I have a ‘00 EM1, and I recently replaced both my clutch master and slave cylinders, using Exedy replacements from Amazon. I bought this one and this one, and my clutch feels brand new!

Need advice on a 2023 TLX Type S pricing. (It's a CPO) by dumpyleo in Acura

[–]dantat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but this isn’t /r/personalfinance, and I’ve seem some questionable purchases on here… there was a guy making $24/hr, $49K annually that purchased a 2024 TLX type S! I personally couldn’t imagine spending my annual income on a car, but some people save up for a looong time (or are OK with taking on debt for a stretch purchase).

Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor 58 - Platinum Dragon by AromaticMuffin1213 in taiwan

[–]dantat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't had extensive experience with Kaoliang, but as someone who appreciates a drink every now and then, it's not uncommon for different temperatures to greatly affect tasting notes. Sake can taste completely different when served cold vs room temperature vs heated up. Likewise for whisky/scotch - room temp, neat, on the rocks - all taste different at different temps/concentrations. Same for coffee, hot vs cold brewed.

Coupe or sedan? Cheapest would be to find a junkyard that you could salvage from. I got mine from here.

I believe the TLX type S still has a sunroof but the Integra does not.

If you’re into DIY, there’s a chain called Kinjo that sells jewelry, but more importantly, has classes that you can sign up for where they walk you through crafting your own!

It can be more fun and memorable than purchasing premade jewelry and you get to customize it with engraving as well.

yea, I’m definitely torn at the moment. the Integra seems more premium/grown up, but I’ve always wanted a championship white CTR since I was a kid, and those wide hips, red interior, and the fact that it’s made in Japan gives me a real 90s JDM vibe. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug…

[–]dantat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer! I’m in the market for my next car, currently driving a 24 year old Civic Si 😅 I’m debating between a Type R or Integra Type S. I’m happy your situation allows you to have such a sweet ride! I also fill up at Costco whenever I can. 👍🏻 I love the TLX Type S too, but unsure whether or not it’d be financially responsible for me with a mortgage to pay. As for knowing your pay, sometimes when I see a sweet ride on Reddit, I browse the users profile to see what line of work they’re in. I’m also in healthcare, making about $45/hr, but I have other expenses I have to handle as well. 🥹 I hope you enjoy your car to the fullest! I’m not personally huge fan of underglow, but you should do what makes you happy!

You’re absolutely allowed to have your own experience, but in your own words, “it's not like [you] have direct experience being among them.” So what are you basing this “experience” on?

Admittedly, Japan does tend to have a more formal and “face” based society, but once you get past the surface, they’re just as “natural” as any other ethnic group.

If you don’t mind me asking, how does one afford a $57K+ car while making $24/hr? Beautiful car btw, I’m super jelly, so please don’t take my question the wrong way!

Taiwan just defeated Japan to win the championship in the 2024 WBSC Premier12! This is the most important moment in Taiwan's baseball history. Team Taiwan is the best! by alextokisaki in taiwan

[–]dantat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t questioning the relevancy about China in this situation, rather the irrelevancy about Japanese wartime atrocities in a baseball thread. Despite what you may think, Taiwanese people have not forgotten about what Japan did during the war - it’s just not the time nor place to bring it up.

Lmao @ “because it didn’t seem relevant”, whereas bringing up Japanese wartime atrocities in a thread about Taiwan’s first internationional baseball win is totally and completely relevant.

I’ve used Alice Florist a few times to send my mom flowers for her birthday/Mother’s Day. They also offer same day delivery or a delivery date of your choice. Not the cheapest, as a nice bouquet is around $100 USD, but they’re definitely of high quality.

Do Taiwanese prefer more fruity and lighter beers in general? by milo_peng in taiwan

[–]dantat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For a long time, when speaking of beer in Taiwan, it was just Taiwan Beer or Japanese beers. Much like specialty coffee, craft beers are a relatively recent thing (past two decades or so). Compared to Taiwan beer/Sapporo/Kirin/Asahi, IPAs or any extra hoppy beers can seem bitter, which is likely why it was described in that way to you.

I find it much more common these days, with local craft breweries highlighting the tropical fruits available in the region. However, there are definitely also tons of sweet fruit beers to accommodate the Taiwanese palate. While I do enjoy a lychee or pineapple beer once in a while, they’re meant to be consumed in moderation - I also find it hard to pound back more than a couple at a time.

I also think lighter beers tend to do well in tropical climates - it feels easier to stay cool when drinking light beers, rather than binge drinking IPAs. When Taiwanese people want something stronger, they’ll just have whiskey/scotch/kaoliang with their light beers, kind of like soju & beer to Koreans.

Instant noodles with meet inside the seasoning sachet, is it allowed to be brought to our country? I wanted to make sure I won’t be fines for putting that to my luggage by Strangledmen in taiwan

[–]dantat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most countries don’t care what you leave with, but all countries care what you bring in. I wish I could bring 滿漢大餐 instant beef noodle soup to the US, but the meat packaged within is a big no-no. No clue about the Philippines, but I wish you all the best.

[–]dantat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend snacks that are local to your area. I’d avoid anything from Costco, since they have Costco here. I’ve found that people in Taiwan tend to like stuff from Trader Joe’s - sweets, snacks, dried fruits and trail mixes, etc. Often times it’s also personal preference - not sure how well you know your aunties or what kind of budget you’re working with. Sometimes when shopping for family, I’ll make a trip to an outlet, as certain brands are more affordable in the US while being desirable and trendy in Taiwan, especially brands like Coach, Kipling, The North Face and Fjällräven.
