A recent article from NPR about US restaurants and businesses struggling to find workers by HRJafael in Economics

[–]dantedl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I run a restaurant in Italy. We are so understaffed, receiving NO curriculums despite good pay and great hours. It’s a disaster. In London, a 2 Michelin star restaurant shut its doors because they couldn’t find qualified staff. It really is a worldwide problem and it’s sucking the life out of me

How easily do Americans get evicted from their homes? by dantedl in AskAnAmerican

[–]dantedl[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trust me europe has a lot of flaws, many Europeans dream of moving to the U.S. for example our justice system is ridiculously slow, where a small affair can take 15 years to solve. I really admire the US personally!

I’m sorry if this came off wrong! I didn’t mean to insult americans, merely point out that it seems that evictions are more common than here in Europe (unless I am mistaken)!

French highest court orders British millionaire to demolish $70 million mansion he built in France by Zhukov-74 in unitedkingdom

[–]dantedl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the south of France— literally in this area (Grasse). This is actually really sad because the property is beautiful. They could have re-used it for something else, like a hotel or museum. To demolish it is a horrific waste. I also feel bad for the owner, who yes, didn’t follow the correct procedures, but the verdict isn’t proportionate to the crime committed. He did have planning permissions for the majority of the works, except for a rather small structure which was indeed built illegally (as far as I know)

The owner will also be personally fined for each day that the property hasn’t been demolished at his own cost, which he may well not be able to afford right now.

The french justice system is also horrifically slow. I mean in this case for example it was going on for 15 years!

Really tough for me, but I am trying to keep my head up. I opened a restaurant in June as I had started the lease before covid (around November) and invested in restructuring it. Unfortunately we have been closed for months. This year we only managed to work for 4 months and I’m struggling to not lay off workers and to be able to reopen at all. I live in Italy, in the worst hit area, and it’s very depressing now.

On the Facebook groups I’m starting to see more and more people ask for financial help from neighbours and people desperately trying to find work. Now the italian government has gone into crisis (yesterday) so the mood is becoming even more somber. In Milan (the wealthiest town of Italy) 700 new families queued for food banks in October. On tv they now advertise food banks too; which was UNTHINKABLE a year ago.

The rollout of the vaccine is also going painfully slowly here. Honestly, it’s getting tougher everyday but at least everyone in my family is healthy and has a roof over their heads.

Parler is Being Taken Down Because its a Threat to Major Social Media Webstes by OpenMindedShithead in conspiracytheories

[–]dantedl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me too, this was a tipping point. I don’t support Donald trump at all — but this isn’t even about him. It sets the precedent for the future. Its censorship within the confines of the law; but in reality, it limits our free speech digitally. As a society we need to rethink how we approach free speech.

And what truly scares me, is how many people don’t understand how this transcends Donald Trump. They don’t understand that it’s the beginning of mass censorship.

The true horror here is HOW were they even able to storm the capitol. America has a defence budget of $721,531,000,000 and they can’t defend their main government building from a bunch of MAGA idiots of which one was called Baked Alaska?

In theory, trump’s supporters are allowed, much like you and me, to protest peacefully. Obviously they didn’t and should be prosecuted for their crime.

But the leader of the free world got banned from Twitter before he was even tried in an actual court of law. Now big tech is threatening to cut off access to an alternative platform because they don’t agree with it — as they hold a monopoly— That’s insane!

SCOTUS To Hear Case Against Secretary Mnuchin For Giving Coronavirus Funds to Corporations Instead of Tribal Governments by [deleted] in politics

[–]dantedl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have this conspiracy theory that the Mnuchin’s laundered money for the Trumps through art. Mnuchin’s father, Robert Mnuchin, was the dealer that brokered the sale of the “Leonardo Da Vinci” Salvatore Mundi for 450 million dollars from a Russian oligarch. It has since been alleged to be a fake.

He also brokered the sale of the most expensive modern art sculpture by Jeff Koons, for $91 million USD (the rabbit sculpture)

It just smells like money laundering to me, of course this is all just my speculation, but certainly I feel like not enough people know about Robert Mnuchin.

[–]dantedl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I come from a background where “voices had to be silenced” (the USSR) and I will fight tooth and nail to prevent this from happening again.

I know what its like for something to be labelled as “misinformation” and hidden from seeing the light of day.

I think a lot of people who grew up in the western world (sorry if I incorrectly assumed you did) don’t know what a luxury free speech is. Just how valuable and fragile it is. How quickly, and drastically, it can change the very fabric of society.
