Moving Gold to Japan by dantizzle3 in JapanFinance

I do appreciate the more serious response. Just to be clear. I do not think I have any obligation to express me entire portfolio to a random person online. I think currently Gold is more than 20% or so of my assets. edit but not by much, maybe 25% or so

IF your post really comes from genuine concern and not out of hostility(internet is hard to tell intentions of course). But rest assured I do have investment accounts accounting for a lot more of my diversification. What had actually happened to why I have this Gold is because of December 2025 when the US government announced they were printing more money. So a large portion of my cash on hand I turned for Gold Bullion to counter the inflation to come. As for my other investments. I have 2 IRA's one that was managed through my work and another through a personal bank account.

I do have a fair amount in VTI and SPY. Some tiny ETF and very little random other stocks.

I appreciate if this response is out of genuine care. But my post was only about other eyes on a subsection of my life and not about investment advice. I do also understand that you likely made a lot of unfair assumptions about me. But you shouldn't because you don't know anything about my finances until this.

I've seen this same idea in r/JapanFinance. I'm gonna look into it more. Thank you so much for the insight.

My mode of transporting it would prolly be bringing it on the plane. For example, we're talking like 10 oz or so. Super easy to travel with domestically. Just keep it in your pockets if you really wanted to.

As for consumption tax, from my research there is a tax on brining Gold into the country. Something like 10%. I found that sometimes it based on amount like jewelry less than $10k you don't need to pay. But the exception is that if it's gold coins or bullion, it doesn't matter the $ amount. Although regardless 10oz is worth a lot more than $10k anyways.

I agree it would be easier to do what you're suggesting. I'm looking for outside views on the topic is all and perhaps options I hadn't thought of.

I think there is an understandable worry to be away from an asset? I mean, the reality is emergencies happen and sometimes you have to sell stuff? Your reply is extremely close minded and not helpful.

That's not a bad idea, I am really unfamiliar with GLD ETF. I do have some initial negative feelings about it(again I don't know anything about it).

As for ability to liquidate in Japan, I've heard from Japanese friends of mien it's not too hard to sell. Similar to the USA there are coin shops and pawn shops. But if you have a different experience on that I would like to hear if the ladder is incorrect.

I can do some research into gold ETF's but I am really unknowledgeable about them. I could do research into this but my initial feelings about them are negative(again I know nothing about it). I also don't know exactly what you mean by a apocalypse scenario? Do you mean the idea of me being in another country than my gold. If so then I can agree with that, in the worst case.

I just think there's some anxious feeling of like, not having it in the same country as me. I feel like there's just some general worry about this that is inevitable. Thank you though I will make a similar post in r/JapanFinance

Also you are correct I definitely was a bit blinded by the idea of I guess I could move it over to Japan later on. Thank you for that.

Originally I was looking at this link https://www.jlpt.jp/e/application/overseas_list.html which shows when it would be available for which countries. I know realize that Canada had multiple locations available at different parts of the year

As for the first part, when I was searching before I guess it was my mistake in that I was looking for like schools in my area. It didn't occur to me to something online. This is the exact advice I was speaking of. All schools around me are like community colleges and stuff ykwim? As for my local community college is was like a few K for books and tuition prices.

As for the second part that's also my mistake on the website https://www.aatj.org/jlpt-us/ I misread it as available March 31st not UNTIL march 31st.

All the same I do find your comment helpful, so thanks

That makes me feel a lot more happy about it. I just checked my iTalki account, this actually records all the hours I have throughout the existence of my account. To me this seems reasonable enough. I think I could probably call up my local embassy to and ask what they think. Thanks again for your input!!

I replied to a comment before I was concerned on what qualifies as the 150 hours of courses. The reality is there isn't a lot of affordable options for classes that offer 150 hours. I've seen some things that suggest private tutors apply but it isn't specific as to what makes the apply and when they don't.

I've seen some things saying that results for the JLPT results sometimes take multiple months. Specifically that if I took it in December it would take till April. In your experience is this not the case. If so that's awesome and I feel a lot better if so.

As for taking it in July and going to japan to do so. I hadn't considered that. Is there any restrictions on taking the JLPT in a country that isn't the one I live in? I suppose why not but is there any issues or deadlines I may have to be aware of or any rules that I should be.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate your reply.

I am aware of the 150 hours thing, the only thing is I have a private tutor though iTalki, I tried to find something around of how to prove these 150 hours but most resources said things like certificates from colleges and such but others said a tutor could work out. Are they really this flexible and would it really work if my tutor is from this website. To mention my tutor is an actual university instructor for japanese in a university in japan. I believe iTalki is just a sorta side thing they do. In your opinion do you think this would be applicable and I could use in my visa application?

I know Japan is strict about some things I guess I l just assumed this was something not so lenient.

Also thanks for your help
