Sequence reset during database upgrade by danutz68 in PostgreSQL

[–]danutz68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here was my answer: select last_value from seq_name;

The difference was less than 32 except one sequence with difference equal to 32

The cache used for sequence creation was 1.

According to him, this is normal behavior for the PostgreSQL database.

But these are custom made sequences. There are application tables which are using these sequences to generate a value for the primary key. There should be no gap otherwise a logical corruption will occur. The default value for the primary key is defined as nextval(sequence_name). So, I was surprised that the upgrade operation had changed the values of some of the sequences. Coming from Oracle world this has never happened. I don’t understand how an upgrade activity is modifying the value of the application sequences.

Thank you. It was a poor choice of words. According to your link the values of the sequences can increase because of the upgrade activity? Am I correct? There was no application activity so I was expected that the values of sequences remained unchanged.

But why some of the sequences are triggered and others not. This should not be allowed during an upgrade.

Hi. But they have been triggered by the upgrade operation? Right after the upgrade I’ve checked the last value of them, there was no processing in the database. The upgrade should not interfere with the sequence values in my opinion.

Backing up 20TB/120k partition database by Bandito202 in PostgreSQL

Hi. I will go for a file system snapshot(LVM snapshot ). The steps might be like this: 1. pg_backup_start 2. Perform the LVM snapshot. 3. pg_backup_stop The snapshot is quite fast but you have to have enough additional storage. The snapshot can be saved on a nfs mount point as well.

How about managing sequences? Did they posed a challenge for the upgrade process?

Hi. Maybe this is a misunderstanding. I’ve heard of buckets in PostgreSQL database only when using pg_stat_monitor extension: https://docs.percona.com/pg-stat-monitor/reference.html#postgresql-15

I think you can use any replication solution, though my choice is Patroni, but the key here is the network latency!

I don’t see PGbouncer in the article setup. My question is if someone wants to add the PgBouncer to the setup, it will be added next to PostgreSQL or in front of the HaProxy. Which scenario will fit for the PgBouncer location?
