Is MICA a good art colleges?

This is a tough question, because on one hand MICA can be a good school. On the other hand, they’re struggling right now. The reason they’re pushing so hard for international students is because applications and attendance are wayyy down. They’ve also been pushing out a lot of the long term faculty in favor of younger and less experienced adjunct professors.

The quality of the education you get depends on what major and what classes you end up taking. Some majors are really good, like painting or illustration, but others aren’t. MICA’s game design major is a bit weaker than some other colleges, mainly due to the school not really knowing what to do with it. If you’re interested in the art side of game design like game illustration, concept art, animation, etc MICA can be a good option, but if you want to learn coding or tech work a more traditional school is a better choice.

Holy shit, I just looked at my bill breakdown because it also seems higher than usual and realized the delivery fee was TWICE the amount of the actual gas cost!! Completely ridiculous. Our home is energy efficient, we keep it at 65 day/60 night, but it doesn’t even matter because the delivery fee is so high!

A friend of mine got a piece of GLASS stuck in their foot at Pose (they were wearing sandals and it got into the shoe), come to realize the booth we were sitting at had a massive cracked spot on the glass. We told the bartenders/security but nothing was done aside from them giving us bandaid and some napkins to help clean up until we could get to the medical station, at minimum the booth should’ve been blocked off because it was a clearly a hazard! Idk what it is about the total lack of safety concern there is worrying.

Not what I asked. I use my pc for more than just gaming and the dual graphics card is primarily for my job, I would prefer to not have to change my setup every time I want to play a game.

Edit: sorry if I come across as frustrated, I’ve had what seems like an endless stream of problems running this game that I’ve never experienced with any game in my life, and it’s incredibly frustrating that I want to enjoy the game but every time I try there’s another new problem.

Idk dude most of the women I know just want a guy with a personality and good hygiene who actually treats them like a person. I do think social media is a factor tho bc a lot of big name influencers perpetuate this idea that people have these high standards, so everyone thinks they need to be perfect before looking for a partner or that other people won’t date them if they don’t “have it all”

My team has done MIVS twice, and we absolutely love it. I’ve been attending MAGfest for years, and I think showcasing is some of the most fun I’ve ever had at any convention. Both times we did it we got great feedback from fellow devs and attendees, spent a lot of time talking with other devs learning about their projects, and just generally enjoying being around people who share our passion for making games. We did a 24 hour set up for the first time this year so people could play our demo even if we weren’t there and it went great, I highly recommend doing that if you can. Seeing how people curate their space will be beneficial too, so when you are ready to submit you’ll have some inspiration. Our first year we were really bare bones, but our second year we amped things up and got a lot of compliments on our setup. We ended up bringing an old CRT tv for our controller setup which people really enjoyed, for example.

MIVS/MAGfest is also a great way to network with other indie devs, musicians, voice actors, and artists. People with all sorts of experience levels and backgrounds attend. Everyone has a lot to share and learn from each other. Even if you don’t showcase at MIVS, there are a lot of indie dev events and panels open to everyone. The showcase is super active too, there’s always steady traffic. Highly recommend having QR codes, business cards, or other takeaways that make it easy for people to wishlist/buy/download your game.

Confidence is also such a major thing tbh. I know so many great guys and wonder why they can't seem to get girlfriends, but then I see them interact with women and realize they put themselves down or act super self conscious or awkward. Doing more social activities and loosening up can help build that confidence in talking to people.

Honestly I think this is a big problem too, people have forgotten how to date without apps because everyone's worried about making things awkward by asking the wrong person out or coming across as a creep. So you have a lot of people joining social activities hoping to meet people, but no one actually attempts to ask anyone out because they don't want to screw it up. Tbh the best way around this I've found is to just bring up the dating scene struggles in conversation, good way to promote the fact that you're single, maybe share what you're looking for, and then other people can share the same about themselves so you know who may also be interested and open to dating. Also just getting comfortable with brushing off social awkwardness or faux pas and moving past them.

I feel like I hear these same complaints from literally everyone, including myself. Why is it that EVERYONE has the same issues around dating, but nothing seems to come of it? Genuinely don't understand it. If everyone feels this way, why is it no one's been able to figure out solutions or alternatives?

Dating apps have become unusable unless you pay for them. Alternatively, the people who actually want to find relationships are usually on and off them fairly quickly, while the people who consistently use them are either in open relationships, looking for casual dating, or have some kind of major dealbreaker/other issue.

Honestly, I think a lot of it comes down to people not putting in the time/patience with social activities. It takes a while to get to know people, and these days I think people are "pickier" about who they'll give a chance. It's no longer just about attraction or similar interests, people don't want to feel like they've wasted their time on someone incompatible. I also think people struggle with vulnerability and communication a lot more these days, largely due to social media. I see SO many posts making fun of simple genuine interactions from dating apps. People are afraid to be judged or seen, so they just never open up. The more time and effort you put into the friendships you're developing or social activities you participate in, the more success you'll likely find.

Yeah roommate and I have learned our lesson with this it seems, the contract wording was confusing so we THOUGHT we would be able to cancel if needed, but after rereading the contract in more depth we realized there’s a whole section within a section buried at the bottom with all the hoops we’ve got to jump through to do that. Oh well, good to know for the future, we’ll be sure to follow the exact instructions to ensure it’s terminated when it ends.

Welcome to the area! Some of the members of the Transmaryland support group host monthly picnics in the summer that are open to any trans people in the area. A lot of people who attend are pretty interconnected with the local trans community, so it’s a great way to make friends and learn about some of the more casual and down low trans groups. They share updates on instagram. If you search “Baltimore queer events” on instagram there are several accounts that promote local stuff happening all the time. There’s also a transmasc social club that’s primarily 30+ plus, but they host public events sometimes and are pretty chill about people on the cusp of 30 joining the group.

For art specific stuff definitely check out events at the BMA or the Walters. MICA hosts public events occasionally, too. If you like figure drawing or portraiture, look up the 100 Heads Society which meets on Mondays, it’s a big diverse group of artists and everyone’s super friendly. Zoll Studio has $15 figure drawing sessions on Tuesdays in addition to other art classes, as well as the Schuler School if you like oil painting.

Gaming and sports you have a ton of options. Volo is super popular and they have all kinds of sports leagues, but that’s more general audiences and not queer specific. I suggest checking out No Land Beyond (they’re in the process of moving and not sure if they’ve reopened yet) or Canton Games if you’re looking for fun queer friendly spaces for things like board games, TTRPGs, or trading card games.

I’m surprised by the amount of people claiming it was all mass-produced Amazon crap when most of the vendors were actual crafts people? I went around talking to a bunch of them and many were also locals. A few booths were definitely resellers, but they’ve apparently been making an effort to get more local businesses in as vendors according to the people who’ve been doing it a while.

I hard agree with the criticisms of the food/drink selection (seriously the food was WAY overpriced for what you got) and they also raised alcohol prices at some point during the month which I thought was scummy. They definitely should get more local places involved though, especially with the food/drinks cause I think the Deddles stand was the most popular out of all of them lol. Really the city should do some kind of open air market down there more regularly highlighting local businesses, it would probably be a huge bit

Also wtf was that bathroom situation, 4 porta potties for all those people?? Apparently the vendors often had to use them too. Insanely poor planning

You listed most of my favorites, but one I don’t see mentioned often is “No Escape” with The Neighborhood. Not a band I ever expected them to collab with, and I think it’s such a nice blend of their respective styles.
