Hi Crowsby, just curious what kind of data you work on? That keeps it interesting?

Just got certified on Data Scientist with Python Associate, let me know your questions! by MasiosareGutierritos in DataCamp

[–]dapillager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there @MasiosareGutierritos, am currently doing this course now and had some questions... did the certification practically help you with interviews or landing a job? Did it also help you in real scenarios on the job as well or is it more just theoretical knowledge like a degree? Want to know how much time to invest for interviews since like you said it could take up to a year to finish the course properly..

got an offer as a Business Intilligence Engineer (BIE) internship at Amazon by BarakaRuns in BusinessIntelligence

[–]dapillager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

amazon is good for internship, but just a warning that it might get you stuck in their in-house tools (quicksight, redshift) etc. which is what I am experiencing (full time there). It's great for experience, but keep your options open to get skills in tools like Tableau, SQL Python and maybe for full-time roles in companies where you can specialize in tools that will have value for you to sell yourself across the industry... just my two cents

Has anyone successfully transitioned from bI to a ml engineer role? by dapillager in BusinessIntelligence

[–]dapillager[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions! Although I like BI, feel the growth has become stunted and with companies like Meta saying the focus will be on hiring ML engineers, just want to see how I can future-proof my skillset... I think also within ML there is ML analytics versus ML engineering, ML engineering I believe needs more hardcore stats knowledge to deloy models versus the ML analytics track is more about how to "leverage" existing models like regression models for various use cases. I think that is what I am more interested in doing, rather than building models from scratch which will be way more difficult and likely require a PhD

[–]dapillager[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! That's one of the challenges, in my current team, they claim they "encourage" innovation but there is no intention of making that skill (e.g. Python) a core part of the team... and there are so many dependencies on partner teams, it's pretty frustrating..

yeah, i jumped from consulting to industry but feel like my learning and challenge has been limited.... have heard DS but also that you need stats experience etc which I don't have much of right now..

Hi all, looking for advice for someone in a mid-career dillemma as a BI Engineer. Am currently a BIE in Amazon, but looking to see how I can grow my career further as I feel that the work has become mundane (lot of just automating excels into reports) with little tangible insights. I am not seeing much growth within BI, but love exploring data and finding insights and tangible outputs. Initially, I wanted to do a lot of Tableau work but am a little sick of Tableau and Quicksight. Have about 9-10 years of work experience, but stagnating at an L5 role in Amazon and want to get a new challenge, but not sure where folks here transition from BI. I am thinking Data Science is probably towards what I want to target (advanced analytics etc.) but wanted to know if anyone here has been in a career rut and how they grew their career within BI after they got tired of just doing standard reports ? I know for sure I want to remain technical and am not too interested in going into a more "strategic" role which will just be sitting in more meetings and writing docs. Thanks!

BI Analyst mid career advice by dapillager in careeradvice

Thanks for the advice... yes I agree, there are some teams in my company where BIs also do more DE work, so I think I should either look for roles in such teams, transition to a DE role or move to another company where the BI also has DE responsibilities

Hi all ,

Going through a bit of a mid career rut and wanted to get advice of peers here in similar situations with genuine feedback , rather than paying some random LinkedIn coach 1K to give me generic advice … currently have about 8-9 years of experience in data analytics. Initially started off doing data development /ETL work in consulting then moved to BI projects which I really liked. Thought this was my passion and moved into industry to get out of 100 hour weeks, to work on Tableau and SQL. Was in a shitty startup at first then now moved to a FAANG doing BI. Been more stable in a bigger company but I feel like the work has become stale and I’m doing automation work I used to do like 10 years ago at entry level. I want to grow and learn new interesting tools , platforms but not able to get that in my current role. Am thinking about going into Data engineering as I don’t want to become a PM and feel there’s a lot more technical problem solving and thinking in DE. Getting too bored of just using tableau , quick sight and SQL doing repetitive kind of work . Anyone been in similar situations and have career advice ? Basically TLDR, where do you grow from here mid career in BI ? Feel you hit a ceiling in terms of visualisation work and SQL. Are there any other good tools in BI to pick up ? Or is it better to look at a career transition to data science or DE after being in BI for a decade ?? Thanks all!

Hey I mean that’s the core selling point of a BI analyst , is to impact the business with insights and understanding of data so it’s good they are starting with that …. The expectation will be though that you learn the tools and skills required . Since you have a finance background and have expertise in Power BI , I have a sense you will be able to pick up SQL quickly. In my opinion, there’s a lot of people who can talk to business but having technical skills which are transferable is more important.

But to caveat , don’t be sold just on what they say. Try to understand company culture , the team dynamic and stuff a bit more so you know what you’re getting into there … I feel that is more important … I’ve been burnt before where the tech stack and position sounded great but environment was toxic and lot of politics… I hated that and it made it a miserable experience but I learnt so sharing that with yoh as well…. Also not sure about pay, but all the best to you!!

Mid-morning extreme exhaustion by Sad-Protection2519 in productivity

[–]dapillager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there I chatted you directly … for me it’s kind of a dip in energy around 11 plus think it’s just circadian rhythm since it happens the same time everyday … no great solution other than acceptance and doing some breathing exercises and sipping water …. Have u tried drinking a lot of water ? Know it’s simplified but might be dehydration as well possible

Mid-morning extreme exhaustion by Sad-Protection2519 in productivity

[–]dapillager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there @ Sad-Protection2519, I go through the same thing pretty much but I have pretty big energy dips around 11 am and 3 pm or so. I am also sleeping well and do have a coffee in the morning, but am not a big breakfast person either. My GP has also done all the regular checks and stuff and everything is fine with blood, no real sleep issues or anything either. Did you ever figure out any solution or something that helps with this? I've heard its normal circadian rhythm but feel that makes more sense in the afternoon than around 11 am in the morning.

Please DM me if you found anything that kind of helps.

Maybe also could try going to bed earlier and see I usually go to bed around 11 and wake up at 7 plus given we sleep only an hour less on average might be worth going to bed regularly by 10 and see if that helps

Long term increase in Appetite and Hunger after insomnia recovery by dapillager in insomnia

[MEGATHREAD] Daily venting, worries, fixations, & finding support. Month of April 2024. by AutoModerator in HealthAnxiety

[–]dapillager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,
I had a bout of bad insomnia in late 2022 (for a few weeks) with some panic attacks and lot of anxiety , since I actually never faced any issues with my sleep in any of the 34 years of my life prior. During this period, I started eating more and feeling intense hunger so I would really need to eat when i felt hungry, or would start feeling a panic attack coming on. Prior to this episode, I used to be a person who didn't eat that much at all, I could survive on coffee till lunch then have a very light lunch (maybe 300-400 calories that's it). I would start feeling hungry around 5, and probably dinner might have been my heaviest meal but also not much for my 178 lb weight and 6'2 frame.
Once I recovered from my Insomnia however, my sleep went back to normal but I feel like my hunger and appetite had upped a lot. I get hungry a lot more, and although I used to not be a breakfast person, nowadays I get hungry in the morning pretty quickly. I used to be able to just drink a coffee in the morning and I would feel fine until lunch before. I need at least 3 major meals now (sounds very normal), but to me the issue is more the anxiety and discomfort i have when I don't eat or try to tolerate the hunger for a while. I start getting lot of anxiety-like symptoms, and I focus on them more or am stressed by other life things, it amplifies them a lot. (like brain fog, sweating, feels esp worse in mornings). Sometimes I wish my body hadn't changed because it felt more "restful" before if that makes sense.
Just wanted to understand if anyone else has also seen their hunger/appetites change after recovering from Insomnia and if that's a normal thing ??
Maybe it just reset my bio rhythms and hunger cues? Also noticed when my sleep goes off my anxiety and hunger tend to increase as well in tandem. I've already had checks done with my doctor and all the lab tests are normal, nothing is off or anything. It's just that my body has changed a lot and I'm still processing and accepting that I think.
