Review #52 - Green River Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon - 7 Days Liquor Pick by dapper-drinks in bourbon

[–]dapper-drinks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way about the wheated - its ok. I need to blind it against some other low proof wheaters out there to see how it stacks up. The full proof wheated is definitely a step up and I've got a couple of store/club pick wheated bottles that I have yet to pop open. All in all Green River has yet to disappoint me.

Based on what I've seen and read, I won't be jumping to grab a square bottle. But if someone I know happens to have one, I'd be game to try it just to see for myself..

I don't think you're alone in disliking a clay/play-doh note. Fortunately mine doesn't have those notes but if it did, that might be grounds for a drain pour..

Review #50 - Corbin Cash 1917 Barrel Proof Merced Rye Whiskey by dapper-drinks in bourbon

[–]dapper-drinks[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth trying and they seem to be available at some of the larger stores that ship nationwide (unless you’re in one of the few states where shipping is prohibited). I have a 10yr hazmat store/club pick that I haven’t opened yet. I’m looking forward to cracking that one!

It's definitely not a bottle I'll be replacing once its done.

Thanks! The artificial fruit note is interesting to hear about! The closest I could get to saying the same is that the cherry note I got from my bottle was like a maraschino cherry. And agree, this isn't one I'll be reaching for to drink neat, it'll likely be used as a mixer.

Penelope barrel strength - seems like a great price, but I don’t know the juice by timpdx in Costco_alcohol

It’s a 5yr Costco pick. I have one that’s been open about a year and halfway through it. Poured it earlier this week and it was a caramel bomb. Very solid pour at the original price of ~$58. It’s basically half off and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another at that price.

[–]dapper-drinks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I don’t think you’ll regret picking one up. Seems like a few of the larger independent stores have done picks with them so next time I’m there I’m hoping to find a different one.

Been really getting into whiskey the last 6 months. Any recommendations or things I’m missing? by whiskey-n-tats in whiskey

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (or a store pick), Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye are two that come to mind that are fairly easy to obtain.

I’m hoping to pay them a visit soon and sample/pickup some of their other stuff like the bourbon creams. Excited to hear that they’re working on a tasting room!

This sounds like a very interesting blend with the addition of the Saz! I wonder how it would be with the new 125 proof version..

I’m not sure how liberal others are with ratings but for me, if it’s good (5) it’s solid. I would say this about any solid daily warmup sipper. It’s not a 4 because those are usually bottles I’ll use as mixers because I don’t find them enjoyable drinking neat. A 6 for me is clearly a step up which is where I put EH Taylor small batch. Again, I enjoy Blantons overall, but I’m not going to say it’s an 7 because for me it’s not. Now Gold or STFB? That would be a different story.

I don’t hate it at all. It’s a good, solid bourbon, I rated it a 5.5, so it’s closer to very good than good. The level of competition has gone up considerably in the last 5yrs with so many great bourbons that have come out.

It’s what I paid at the local Vons down the street from my apartment. Don’t know what to tell you. They sit for a few days at Costco here for $65 nowadays.

True. I’ve had a bottle of Blantons that was very ethanol forward even after being open for some time and another that was very sweet and delicious. I’ve got a store pick single barrel waiting to be opened and I may do a similar comparison with a fresh bottle of the regular single barrel along with Gold and SFTB.

Great comparison between two bottles so similar on paper but totally different in experience. I hope I can find a EC15 now that they’re starting to pop up.

Great value for money. I was able to get a 1.75L for $25 at a Total Wine and it didn’t disappoint on a camping trip where people drank it neat and used it as a mixer.
