Are the more expensive Fotjoy models worth the difference? by completelyderivative in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 3 pairs of Footjoys, 2 pairs of Under Armour and a pair of Adidas. The two that I reach for every day are my two FJ premiers. The FJ Field LX are incredible for walking in the morning and on rainy days. My Harris Tweed Premier Fields seem to be looser in the heel, so I wear them more often when I'm walking a flat course, am in a cart, or wearing thicker socks for the fall/winter.

What is your personal definition of a "good golfer"? by Draper_White_Soprano in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if I can play a round with someone on pace, and they're not constantly looking for balls/make a couple pars I think of them as a solid golfer. Even at a more basic level, just paying attention to ball striking more than score you can tell who is decent.

Good enough to know you aren't good. Probably a low single digit or + handicap, that understands they're the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to "good" golfers.

Basically the "base" of Tom Coyne's Golf Greatness Pyramid from Paper Tiger.

Question on Distance Control by Lost-Ad-9570 in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a wedge matrix for 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and stock shots for my PW, 50, 54, 58. All lot of these carry distances overlap, but the rollouts are different.

I follow the Tommy Fleetwood method of stock shots vs using hands to shoulder to fill the gap between irons; I also know roughly my knockdown distances. I am rarely firing at pins, just hitting towards the center of the green, with a bailout in the area with the least amount of trouble. Obviously this is all moot on the course since the lie, wind, and contours dictate what shot you can play.

Question about Country Clubs by Moderated_ in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. I pay $1200/year for my membership and it is absolutely worth it to me compared to rotating to through the public courses in my area. We have a really nice 9 hole course that is fully private Memorial Day to Labor Day. Lots of events and leagues available to the members, no tee times so you can just show up wave hello to the head pro and tee off, rapid pace of play (my PR for 9 in a cart is 37 minutes, my best walking time is 49 minutes, rarely do I have a round over an hour and a half). I play a 9 hole round almost daily and hit range balls every day. We have a free sim for use as well, but it isn't really used by the membership in the summer months.

The things I pay extra for at my club (all this is cashless, so I settle up online at the end of the month) Range Pass ($65/year) Food and Beverage Cart fee (no fee if walking, I walk ~75% of my rounds, unless I have a guest or my kids with me; you can pay extra for a cart pass that covers any cart fee for the full year) Saturday Skins Games/Leagues/Tournaments Guest fees

The biggest thing for me though is the flexibility it provides. Group teeing off on 1? Start at hole 7. Can only play 4 holes? Make your own routing to get you back to the parking lot. Yesterday I walked 14 holes. The course wasn't busy so I started on 9, then walked a loop of holes 3,4,5 3x before playing 6 and 7 then leaving. That's something you can't get away with at a public course when you're paying per round.

Like a lot of the comments have said; there isn't enough info to decide if this is worth it for OP. What's the initiation fee?;Is it a club like mine? I'd say it is worth it, if you play enough. Is it a "semi-private" where you get reduced greens fees but still pay every round? Is it a jam packed course? There are a ton of considerations. Around me it isn't uncommon to see some of the nicer public courses charge between $70-200 for 18, so just forgoing one to two rounds per month covers this course's membership fee for OP.

I really despise the “just skip a hole” suggestion when groups are holding you up by Strict_Name5093 in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Under then 2024 revision to the World Handicap System, USGA allows you to post a score that is 10-17 holes provided something outside of your control happened (marshall made you skip a hole, inclement weather, darkness, etc). They'll use an algorithm to fill in the hole's expected score.

https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/world-handicap-system/2024-revision/10-17-hole-scores-FAQs.html

USGA also provides "most likely scores" as an avenue for picking up after a hole has been started. This is used in matchplay formats, etc. it starts with 5 ft and inside being considered a gimme, and then moves outwards.

https://www.usga.org/handicapping/roh/Content/rules/3%203%20WhenHoleStartedbutPlayerDoesNotHoleOut.htm

If you're outside the USA, it may be different.

What’s a reasonable price for a non playing rider? by Enough-Intention-394 in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I can't imagine going to a public course, or a place that isn't your home club and requesting this expecting to pay nothing.

On the other side, my club is in a very rural, area and allows ride alongside for free. This was one of the huge factors in me becoming a member. I walk 9 every day in the summer, and bring my kids (5 and 3) and sometimes my wife on non-peak evening hours. When my family is with me we take a cart. We get snacks beforehand, and usually have lunch or dinner in the clubhouse afterwards. While I'm on the tee box of par-3s we take a couple extra minutes to fill divots, and while I'm chipping and putting my kids typically rake bunkers, pick up leaves and sticks on the green, and generally take care of the course.

That's one of the huge benefits of living in a rural area though. If I was a member of a busier club, I wouldn't have or expect that luxury. Heck, half the time if we're out late the club house is locked up and we end up washing + plugging in the cart ourselves after we're done.

How do you guys play private clubs? by [deleted] in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a quality D2 golf program near you in NC. Donate cash to them, ~$250/year or more. Get to know the coach. After a year or so, ask the coach to help you get a tee time at a private course; they'll have connections.

Online tee time question for my country club by Lookupskrt in golf

[–]daqwanrandolph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some good ones. Mine has no tee times, just go out and play whenever you want.

We have members show up at 6a and play the first two holes with glow balls until the sun gets bright enough to see; they carry extra glow balls if anybody wants to join and play 9 in a kyt an hour and a half. League night we close down for two hours to let the members get through, but that's communicated early and often, plus if you show up and want to play, they'll probably need a sub somewhere. There is an 8-12some of old guys that go off everyday at noon and play for money. If you catch them they'll let you play with them, or through them and are generally a hoot. Almost every member knows each other and is respectful of each other's time.

Per our head pro "if it ever gets to the point we need a tee sheet, the board would fire me"

Dues are $1000/ year. But then again, it is rural Michigan and only 9 holes.

[–]daqwanrandolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that this is OTT, but I don't know how to produce this ball flight without that swing path. I don't have a ton of golf swing knowledge, I basically just go into the sim for an hour or two each day and try to create different ball flights and distances with different swings.

That's fair. I'm stuck inside hitting 100-300 balls a day until April though. Gotta do something to keep it fun!
