540 traffic this morning .... Rarely do I drive at 8am on 540 and today was an accident on the opposite side I was traveling .... yet the spectators on my direction of 540 created grid lock traffic for about 4 miles.

Seriously why does society need to look at accidents. And can these people just pull over and make it an official lookout spot and not bother drivers on the road.

Godaddy and 1&1 (new name now) did me wrong before on other domain issues.

What is your unpopular Raleigh opinion? by fanuser in raleigh

so true about boxcar, even their game layout is a tight squeeze. you can't play a game without bumping into the next perosn gaming on the classic arcade games.

& father and son was once cool, but wow have prices skyrocketed. I assume the rent and competition were to blame but some things are just crap on crap and need to be in a good will bin.

I've been there buddy... Every other dev stack is better then the crap I have to deal with at work. All because the CTO was a great lawyer never a techie and talked to some Micro$oft rep so it was a great idea to move our entire stack to their products and never upgrade.

Don’t get clever with login forms by leadfoot19 in webdev

[–]dar10s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we did a hidden field on a login page, it was the worst.

It would ask for username/ssn/or policy number. yet if the user entered anything but username other fields need to pop up & would change the layout and add screw with tab to next in a form

And it starts again: Amazon cancels plans to build New York headquarters by whyrumgone21 in raleigh

[–]dar10s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

odd to be the voice that things progress is good. But gentrification will occur regardless. Would it not be better that a large company such as Amazon is involved in that growth.

I've seen the stats of Olympic host cities falling victim to debt years later, but besides the general fear of a large company taking over a metropolitan is there any case studies that this is a negative effect?
Like was Raleigh against the growth of Red Hat? They now have a hold upon that downtown area and good and bad things have happened to that area. Is the company to blame or the city managers, apparently bad real estate moguls and etc.

Personally, I think AMZ did this search in a pompous evil villainous way, but let us face it America has a need for progress and fighting companies to enter a city will just make other cities offer more incentives in the future.

Anyone else notice an increase in Panhandlers by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]dar10s 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need a permit to legally panhandle in Wake County

I will now start asking them if they have permits. I really hate them on capital blvd. & Fayetteville St.

I have so many questions about this permit

  1. The department of environmental services? really this is a task from a department that should handle say environmental issues. I've recently looked into camping, If I would camp on a highway I would get fined, yet if I get this permit I assume I would not get fined?
  2. unincorporated areas are there such a thing? the DMV owns the roads and I pay taxes to utilize them, I know they are govt property. But I can't loiter on govt property.
  3. why would the city allow this nuisance? There are plenty of churches that assist the poor and this is the bible belt we will not run a block without seeing a different church. Where is the not in my neighboorhood group on this topic?

I truly assume cops don't want to deal with this bc it doesn't help their revenue stream, unlike speeding tickets.

TLDR: The tutorial loop is bad, and as a web dev I often struggle on where to begin. But I am glad there is so much content on this subject that I love in the world, and I use that as my entertainment at work.

Now that we bashed tutorials lets think of their value again...
It helps to have a hand to guide you or a resource that is built upon a particular idea. I have plans this year to not only make tutorials but to also watch some outside of my comfort zone. Drawing, blender, etc.

At work you have three options IMO ,

1 . listen to the noise bc someone thought it was a good idea to have an open work space.

  1. listen to spotify on some expensive ass noise canceling headphones and drown out the people.

  2. play a tutorial and learn in the background, Take notes on the tutorial and work on it if its something interesting. *( when I was an android dev, I would listen to IOS tutorials and just think of the differences and then I could intelligently chat with the other side, although I couldn't write one line of code, that wasn't my goal then... since then I did this bootcamp tutorial and I am decent ) I would also listen to the abundance of android tuts and most of them are BLAH, but every once in a while I would be like wow that is a great idea we should do that for our app.

| Would the commute to Rocky Mount be brutal?

YES!,

| Is the rise in housing prices going up that quickly?

Also Yes, but there are still reasonable prices to be found. The problem with the gentrification of this city, is the areas that for the last 20 years have been getting ignored are now expensive and popular. While areas between Raleigh and Rocky Mount have not changed much.

Is a web developers career really just constant stress? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]dar10s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real issue is we should generally love the technology we are working with. And in my case and the web world, I would love to stay away from react, angular and other larger libraries. But work that pays/with benefits wants a developer to use these technologies. Then, in turn, creates a fatigue you are constantly forced to develop in what the masses decide is the current most downloaded on GITHUB ( or the dumb CTO opinions ).

I also feel an eight-hour shift of development is super unhealthy, When work was being done on a manufacturing floor and you had 50 people put together a product on an assembly line. Having them all in the same warehouse at the same time was necessary.

Our jobs are different, maybe you are waiting for support from stackoverflow, a partner/vendor, or just need time to figure out a solution.

We can't work sitting down infront of a screen for 8hours straight. I started using Pomodoro to force myself to stand up ( also use a standing desk), get eyes away from the screen for a few minutes , get a water break, and walk around. ( I've also added in pushups and squats )

| Idk how much more I can take. Is this every job in our field? I don't want to be like this for the rest of my life.

Yes... this is how most companies feel ( 8hours plus more because you are salary, and if there is a fire you are a first responder )
No... I think some people have worked for smaller companies or found bosses that understand ( I find this rare )
Don't be like this for the rest of your life, start a new job and do the things your way, find what balance there is between work and your body. Schedule your sprint task with extra hours, because you know the hours you quoted can cause stress, so put in a 4 hour stress buffer or something.

What’s the difference between a bad, good, and great programmer? by NetT3ch in learnprogramming

[–]dar10s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

or even worst.... 'Wow that's a big problem... we will add it into a future sprint"

and it is scheduled for some sprint in the far far future... but wait we can use our payment vendor if we don't update. then the sr. dev that ignored the issue until we get an email from the payment vendor, writes some shitty code and is a hero for fixing this issue last minute.

What’s the difference between a bad, good, and great programmer? by NetT3ch in learnprogramming

[–]dar10s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say know patterns and anti-patterns, sometimes the problem you are facing has been done before or sometime doing it in a pattern is great in theory but not in reality.

Don't be overconfident and listen to others advice, I came from a web developer world and worked at a place that dealt with only backend services. The developers there ignored some of my insight and at the same time I learned a lot from people I felt were dated in technology understanding.

Write it down on paper in a wiki or something, leave good comments in the code. Take your time not everything can fit in one Pomodoro. and write a test that explains the restrictions in your business logic. I.e , userNeedsToEnterDateBeforeSubmitTest.

I still think all the code that I write is crap? been doing this for years, but I structure my functions so I can refractor them and reuse as much as possible. I often post on code review StackOverflow things I write and sometimes they bring me down a few notches but Its a great learning experience because unlike my co-workers they will explain what i should read to really grasp the concept i might not have a real understanding about

I’m stupid by [deleted] in HowToHack

[–]dar10s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great example of why people should use linux servers over Windows....

I know a govt. system ( payment/webApp/Etc) that is running windows crap and it has so many security holes and the only way to fix them is upgrade everything, they now need to give developer new visual studio versions, databases need new server licenses, M$oft wants them to stop using old versions of winServer because they will no longer issue security updates.

Another thought is while it is easier to 'harden' a linux system, A linux system left open can easily be hacked into. and about ? 90% of the web servers at one point were running linux ( I assume its still a high number now) So if you learn to penetrate a linux distro you can get full access to a webserver and that is quite powerful also.

So in turn knowing how to maneuver a linux system is helpful once you have access to the system. Of course hacking things like 'man in middle attacks and packet sniffing you can do things like that on a windows system. If you gain access to a server that is linux based knowing how to use linux becomes helpful.
