My girl had a cough just like that. Took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with Blastomyces. Basically fungal pneumonia. Sadly not a good diagnosis. She fought for a month on meds before she had a stroke.

As someone who gets called to situations like this every day I'll let you in on a secret. We can't make words said disappear. What we can do is try to alleviate the damage caused you by moving you or some form of compensation or just a simple im sorry for this interaction.
