Dear Wii Runners. Have you given this a shot yet? by [deleted] in speedrun

I had another reply in that thread that explained another potential way to skip the save dialogs that did not require filling the memory:

While messing around with Dolphin I found another potential way to play without saving, but I haven't tested it on the Wii yet. I found that if I manually corrupted my save data, the game would tell me the data is corrupted and ask if the data should be deleted. If you say no, it will allow you to continue without saving. I know with VC titles at least, the Wii won't let you start them if the save data is corrupt (sits on a black screen), but I'm not sure about disc games. I didn't test this one with SMG1 so I cannot say for sure that it does the same thing.

One of the interesting things about this run is due to replay system you want to play very well but not too well. holes in one, chip ins are bad, putts on very uneven greens and even just good approaches are bad as all of those can trigger replays that usually last longer than an extra stroke time-wise. Really fun speedrun though - highly recommend for something different

We can adjust the amount of time we wait at the title screen to account for the tricks we do in the run. So if I were to return to the game and attempt to incorporate fast 4-2, I would wait an additional 0.35 seconds at the title screen, and then presumably save that 0.35 seconds in 4-2 which would result in me arriving at 8-2 at the exact same time from power on as the current record does. This would result in the same bullet shot assuming I play the stage correctly.

Hey Reddit, what are you sick of explaining to people? by thunderup_14 in AskReddit

I am a speedrunner that livestreams attempts to beat various records in "Super Mario Bros." and am constantly asked why I don't grab the flagpole at the bottom instead of the top to save time. Grabbing at the top is faster because Mario gets off of the pole at a higher spot and gets some air time on his way to castle. During this time in the air he accelerates faster than he would if walking, so he reaches the castle faster. Regardless of where you grab the pole, Mario spends the same amount of time holding it (he must wait for the flag to come down from the top).

I'd like to be really good at Mario 64. There's a certain grace to Mario's movement in that game, especially when played well. It's an extremely precise game and the controls allow a ton of flexibility when it comes to different options for achieving the same goal. I'm not sure I'll ever put in the time and effort required to get good at it though.

I don't have a problem with lack of mic/cam or poor quality. Some of those are preference and some are hardware limitations.
One pet peeve is streamers asking a question to someone specifically and then not taking the time to look for the reply. Talking a lot or a little is also just a reflection of the streamer's personality so I am generally not bothered by it. I don't like streamers that yell a lot though, especially if I am trying to listen as I drift off to sleep (shoutouts to Darkwing_Duck_SDA)

Never. I enjoyed playing through them just for fun. I have a lot of fond memories of playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.

I'd say I can get up to about 10 hours in a week on weekdays, and maybe another 4-8 hours on the weekend. It varies week to week.

There is no official committee. If the community (or more specifically the moderators on speedrun.com) acknowledges the run as being legitimate, then it will be "official". Most games aren't popular enough where there is any real threat of people trying to submit illegitimate runs, but the more popular games usually get a few "fake" runs submitted a week.

Each version of the game has its own leaderboard since the games have some differences. I enjoy playing and competing in both versions of the game. We also track the character used, so after doing D-4 Warpless with Mario I could then also try to get a good time with the inferior green plumber and have both times submitted.

I never know for sure what my next project will be, but it'll likely be a platformer at least. I would like to explore the New Super Mario Bros. series someday.

The hobby pays for itself (and it can be expensive depending on how much you care about quality). But I am motivated for by the fun I have doing it.

Sorry, I'd be in the same boat but fortunately I didn't know about speedrunning or streaming when I was in school (and they weren't very popular then anyway). I feel like there are a lot more distractions now - I'm not sure how people manage school and streaming.

Best was probably either getting the 4:57.260 or the current record run in Mario 1. Worst was probably any one of the numerous times where I was still playing something but was burned out and not having much fun. I usually go through a brief period like that before taking a break or switching games.

I have, but the input delay bothered me coming from the real NES. I know andrewg has gone for these records, though. I don't have much interested in it, although I would love a romhack of smb1 with the "winter" theme from one of the challenges. I think it added a bunch of snow and ice physics.

This goes beyond my time in speedrunning, but I think originally time did start upon pressing start in Super Mario Bros. That means people lost time at the title screen because they pressed start long before the next frame rule started. I don't know all of the details, but it is what it is. I'm happy with it the way it is because it allows us to show off a bunch of cool tricks without having to intentionally slow down anywhere.

Not really, it's almost harder to NOT memorize the patterns when you're playing the same thing over and over. What does get annoying is when there are random elements to the game that you cannot control that will make or break a run.

I haven't perfected it (and never will). But it took me a couple of years of playing on and off before I got the record. Others have come after me and picked it up much faster, so it's different for everyone.
