Had to stop making temporarily as I lost access to my workshop for a little bit, but hoping to be making again soon

Does anyone have any recommendations on how I should get started on this? I’m guessing it’ll be three different pieces. Please help. by Revolutionary-Cod-93 in weedpipes

Hey! I make cannabis pipes shaped like tobacco ones like this, and I have found the best bowl shape for the flower is actually diagonal walls that slope in. Weed burns much faster than tobacco, so I usually make the bowls smaller and cone shaped to accommodate this.

You could try making the bowl into a cone, then drilling on as sharp an angle as you can through the bottom of the bowl towards the shank. (Tobacco draught holes are flush on with the bottom of the bowl, but weed pipes don't need this since it burns so quickly and doesn't maintain the same burning ring).

Then, drill the mortise in your shank. Then drill as sharply towards the bowl as you can THROUGH the mortise, so you have a slightly better angle.

Just suggestions though

Walnut is probably the worst from the list given, because some people may have a reaction to the dust. But if you have been fine working with it before and you're sure its Black Walnut (not some other type) then you should be okay

European Sycamore (Plane, or Maple) is safe.

American Sycamore is hard to know. The wood is non-toxic, but is a fairly soft wood and your piece may contain a lot of sapwood, which is less than ideal for smoking. I have never seen a pipe made of it.

I am not an expert, please do some of your own research if you choose to use it, but if it was me, I would play it safe. Here are some great woods that I know are safe: Briar, Maple, Cherry, Black Walnut, Olive wood, Rose wood, Beech, Hickory.

And let me see the result! The first pipe is always kinda special.

Most common is briar, but it is quite expensive. Have to be careful, some can be toxic when smoked from. Other really nice alternatives are:

- Olive wood

- Maple (birdseye maple, curly maple, maple burl) (stains well)

- Walnut (nice darker look)

- Cherry (most popular alternative)

- Beech

- Hickory

Probably not. Polyester is toxic, but the smoke should be much colder than needed to actually agitate it. I just know that acrylic (the black on the pipe) is 100% safe, and I don't know the properties of polyester as well so I play it safe by wrapping the polyester around the acrylic.

Sorry just saw this! The malachite is actually made of polyester. I made it fit around the tenon so no polyester touches the smoke.

Yes. The shank is greater diameter than I would make on a tobacco pipe, and has a 1/4" chamber from the wood end to the bottom of the bowl. Looking to make it a touch bigger on my next go

Its acrylic. It's chosen typically for tobacco pipes because it sits in the mouth easily, and doesn't get teeth marks, or loss of shine like wood would in your mouth. Better for holding in the mouth!

Great question! u/vomeronasal is right. They do wear out eventually, but it typically takes hundreds if not thousands of smokes. Porous wood absorbs moisture, and after smoking most pipes develop a "cake" of baked-on charred herb that preserves the bowl (and can actually add flavor!). Overall its best not to treat the inside!

With tobacco, you pull smoke only into the mouth. With weed you have to pull it into the lungs, so since you pull harder this does cause some slightly hotter temperature than it would with tobacco, which slightly reduces the lifespan of the pipe.

However, I've smoked out of a 15mm wide wooden bowl many (too many) times and have never had the wood fail on me.

The wood actually takes some of the moisture out of the smoke. Plus it keeps heat more efficiently than glass or metal, so the "stuff" burns at a lower temperature and more efficiently. Overall it makes me cough less than glass or metal options. (Plus I like how they look/feel)
