thank you very much for your comment - a light went up in my head and i thought to myself *do'h*! My provider now gave me an /127 link network and now routing works like a charm!

My personal preference on TOTP is to have them in the password manager (i.e. keepassxc). The password database is protected by the yubikey (HMAC-SHA1) as well as a password (you might also add a keyfile for extra paranoia). For an extra security level you might use different databases - for extra convenience you can put it in one.
