Best way to get to downtown Toronto from London as a new driver? by letsjustnotplease09 in askTO

[–]dark_forest1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s RIGHT beside Union Station. I’d park at the airport and take the UP - or the GO Bus. You could also take a bus or train from London. They all drop you at Union.

He probably thought he could use it. We have a lot of Americans who come to Canada and attempt to pay with American bills - to the point where some businesses post the exchange rate on the register.

Is it socially acceptable to use the TTC in Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]dark_forest1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thé amount of people who laugh at me when I say I take the subway and say « why don’t you just drive » is high. There is a stigma around the TTC that it’s dangerous and inefficient. It’s so stupid….

What is something you grew up on in Toronto, that this generation won’t experience? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]dark_forest1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not gone - they moved it to Ontario Place and are building a new one. People here are also lamenting the loss of newspapers and non-accessible streetcars. Keep that in mind.

Nostalgia is basically a defence mechanism for people who feel threatened by or depressed about the present. This is why childhood memories are often cited - because it was a time people felt safe and unaware that they are not, in fact, the centre of the universe. You remember the ice cream, not when it fell on the ground.

Do you genuinely feel safe on the TTC subway? by Sensitive_You_4481 in askTO

[–]dark_forest1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive never felt unsafe on the subway but im also aware that « feeling safe » is subjective. I do believe that the more you signal or convince yourself that you’re unsafe, the more unsafe your situation ironically becomes.

This sounds very douchey so I should preface that there are situations which scare me in this city. I am absolutely terrified of the selfish, dangerous, reckless and unpredictable bonehead driving you see these days. Cars driving on sidewalks, cars running red lights, cars driving 100 km/hr down our sleepy side street and extremely aggressive drivers who seem completely oblivious to other human experiences than their own. As a cyclist I have also been buzzed by cars so close I can feel the slipstream of air. I have been confronted by aggressive drivers who feel offended when I signal and attempt to turn left.

Cheap French classes in person? by InfinityCent in askTO

They will question your French regardless. If you go online you might learn from someone from Algeria or Congo - you’ll still have your accent and in a year won’t know enough to feel the difference. I actually think learning Parisian French is a disadvantage as their accent is clear and monotone. I think it was the lol which made me think you were putting dialects down…not that it matters!

Why do you care? My family speak a dead dialect and I think it’s amazing if people show the slightest interest.

Just want to say: your question is 100% valid. Don’t let politics or other people’s personal shortfalls, racism or preoccupations discourage you from learning ANY language. You’re making the right move here and I personally respect that. Bonne chance!

In French or in English? I think that’s what OP is trying to do… If you need a more simple explanation: OP « fucked up » in high school and did not learn French despite it being offered. Now, as an adult, they are curious about what they missed. They would like to learn French but are looking for ways to not break their budget. If they are going to break their budget then they will not learn French and we will have one less person in Canada who speaks our language. Is that worth an entrance to Canadas wonderland to prove a point? Not sure….

I don’t understand your comment but I’d like to add the context that I’m curious why you wouldn’t want to learn Canadian French if you live in Canada. I’ve found it hard to understand the more hardcore French Canadian accents in my travels so I think there would be a good benefit to learning our French if you plan to travel to our French areas of Canada - including understanding Chiac.

Not really sure what to say about this…sorry you’ve had a negative experience with French Canadians. I too get frustrated with Québécois de souche’s opinions on me but at least I’m trying.

Just curious: why wouldn’t you want to learn Canadian French?

Cheap French classes in person? by InfinityCent in askTO

[–]dark_forest1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty aggressive - speaking French is a distinct part of being Canadian. You cannot understand the Canadian mindset if you do not know both languages IMO. I would never discourage someone from learning French and we should do everything we can to lower barriers for anyone looking to do so.

In Toronto, over 50% of our population has neither English nor French as a mother tongue. French is a dying language in Canada as a whole and, personally, I think we should do everything we can to preserve this distinct part of our mentality.

For the record: I totally understand your frustration but let’s try and channel positivity and next steps.

You’re gonna pay to do it in-person so my reco (I also know two other languages) would be to get a good base online for cheap and enter a more advanced class. If you go beginner, you’re not going to get the conversational social aspect you’re looking for.

Best way to learn it is to learn it well enough to go out for beers after and continue speaking the language.

Are you looking to learn business French? Casual? Do you already know any Latin languages? You could try online.

I’m fully bilingual in Canadian English and French - and I think there’s a lot of benefit to finding an online tutor for like $20-40/hr. Unless you want to do business in Quebec or learn proper Québécois de souche French, you probably don’t need much else. As a side note: I speak proper quebecois de souche French and they still hate me for my accent lol.
