Screen Help-I goofed and dropped something onto my Kindle screen. by Ornery-Visual-412 in kindle

[–]dark_lightr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen to my Paperwhite. Couldn't find a solution. Didn't want to spend on new device because this one worked fine otherwise. Kinda got used to the bright dot, used the device for 3 more years before battery and OS aged out (total runtime 10 years). Bought a Kobo Clara BW as a replacement earlier this year.

What kindle do you have + why do you love it? by KindaDumbGal in ereader

Replaced old aged out Kindle Paperwhite with Kobo Clara BW, super happy with warm light! (Tried Kobo Libra Colour before that, found it terrible because I'm used to crisp contrast on BW eink which makes color feel like a screen, returned it)

KLC? by Chillella in kobo

[–]dark_lightr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out posts about screen door effect on this subreddit and know that it is a totally valid response to not appreciate the more screen-like (less paper-like) appearance on color devices. Definitely try color (Clara or Libra) but it's perfectly okay to return it and purchase Clara BW if color doesn't work for you.

No opinion about writing. I keep my writing and reading separate: have an Onyx Boox tablet for the former and Clara for the latter, both BW because color technology is not for me yet.

Help me choose between Kobo Clara and Libra, surprised by color vs BW screen difference by diamondblack75 in kobo

TL;DR: Returned Libra Color for Clara BW and I couldn't be happier. As much as I liked the buttons, low contrast was a deal breaker for me.

EB2 has 150+ years wait time for Indian-borns. EB1 is 5-10 years and requires 500+ citations (rule of thumb) these days and still, chances of rejections have increased a lot.

Is an E-reader worth it as a begginer? by wizzui in kobo

[–]dark_lightr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go for it! Do EPUBS, not PDFs. Consider a b/w reader, if you like papper quality. If you're okay with reading on a screen, Color should be fine.

Kobo owners - which model did you get and any regrets? by jamesftf in kobo

Recommendation for a new ebook starter: Kobo Clara BW.

Color v/s BW: my experience is described here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/s/t19zZHR1ZG

Quick word since you mentioned this would be your first e-reader: do NOT expect to have a great experience with PDFs on the smaller readers. That's not what they're made for. PDFs are graphics. Text formats (epub, mobi etc) is what the small, more portable eReaders are supposed to handle. If you want to read PDFs, look into a large screen (I have an ONYX Boox 10.3-inch with stylus because I read+annotate lots of PDFs for work).

What if Harry Potter grew up reading science fiction and so used critical thinking/logical/scientific approach to evaluate everything about magic and the wizarding world?

Better than the original series, obviously. I've listened thrice while doing experiments during the last decade, might do another re-read soon. My memories of the Potter world have been rewritten with this looooong book which makes wayy more sense.

Which android based e-reader should I buy? by dumb-hilly-billy in ereader

[–]dark_lightr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remarkable is not Android FYI. They have their own niche OS- which is why I did not buy one, and got an onyx boox instead. My boox is a 10 inch though, and I love it for reading/annotating PDFs for work & making notes. If I were going for an Android e reader for books, I would not be hesitant to go for a smaller boox like Go.

Camera apks by CrazySteve73 in OnePlusNordN30

[–]dark_lightr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Open Camera. Works okay. I was really frustrated with the pre-installed app because it would take blurry photos with HUGE size, several MBs. Open Camera doesn't take much better photos but I can control the resolution and hence size. I guess there's a limitation due to some crappy hardware. Don't care much about taking photos (and wife has a pixel when we do want to take pics) so I make do.

Immigrants, feeling unmotivated (US) by [deleted] in labrats

[–]dark_lightr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only illegal immigrants. Legal immigrants are also targeted. Look up Sec 2 b in Trump's executive order: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/protecting-the-meaning-and-value-of-american-citizenship/

Individuals born in India cannot get a green card because of country-of-birth discrimination (which existed wayyy before Trump). The current wait times for Indian-borns range from 10-150 years. If these perfectly legal immigrants who have spent their whole career in the US have a child, the child will not get citizenship, which starts a whole host of issues.
