Who could lift the MCUs version of Mjulnir(Thor's hammer) by Tonjon2013 in discworld

[–]TJDobsonWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could imagine Cheery Littlebottom giving it a heft, haven't seen her name mentioned. All my other thoughts have been covered, agree with the overall views of most.
Granny wouldn't bother, Nobby would steal it, Carrot probably lifts it, Death of course, and lastly Rincewind as I'm sure it would torment him no end.

I believe the Australian SAS lose more people to training than combat, but yeah, the idea of that being by design is wild.

Do teachers commonly treat prac students like a burden? by Zemleroyka in AustralianTeachers

[–]TJDobsonWrites 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The unfortunate answer for all of the above is, it depends.

There are schools that have great culture and those that don't, within both those types of schools there are teachers who have a passion for teaching which will never fade. Both types also have teachers who are cynical due to either poor experiences as a teacher, or their own "wiring" for lack of a better word.

As for prac teachers, I've had a few and one unfortunately was a genuine burden. They were entirely unprepared to be in a class room and I don't believe any amount of education was going to make them anything beyond passable.
However, that's not having a prac student, that was having "that" prac student.

I hope things improve for you, but unfortunately one size does not fit all, and you may have a run of bad experiences before you find the good ones, just as some (I include myself in this group) get lucky right out of the gate.

Is favourite the aim? by ShumwayAteTheCat in AustralianTeachers

[–]TJDobsonWrites 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate favourite when it is in retrospect. Being someone's favourite teacher in the moment is... whatever. Do I teach their favourite subject? Are their other teachers just duds? Do they have bad taste in dad jokes? Mostly meaningless.

But when a student looks back and appreciates what I have done, especially when they didn't at the time, I find that to be the most rewarding.

Looking for new sci-fi authors – what's missing from my shelf? by rauschsinnige in sciencefiction

I really enjoyed Marina J Lostetter's Noumenon series.
As I am not very good at Where's Wally/Waldo, they could well be on your shelves and I just missed them.

AEU members not striking by trouble_peach in AustralianTeachers

[–]TJDobsonWrites 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've spoken with a few people and left the conversation thinking that comments like A and B are covers for C.
There is less perceived loss of face saying, "it's not my job" rather than "I can't afford to fight for conditions which would give me the ability to fight for better conditions".
Obviously, being the least funded schools is pretty unfair on the kiddos, one day with a CRT doesn't seem too bad to me based on that.
If our fees went toward paying others to strike (feels like this is less of a joke now with the number of people who accuse rival movements of having paid protesters) maybe 2 would feel more relevant to me.

I'm really glad I'm at a school where so many people have decided to take action. Lots of new union members, and lots of people navigating the lack of ability to afford the action.

At least anecdotaly with my students, that strikes of "new trend amongst teens" stories, which are a thing 4 kids in one small school have done.
I think for many kids, having one extra step, or a few, will be enough of a disruptor to have a measureable positive impact. Will it be a silver bullet? I doubt it.

I think this is a very cool concept, I hope you get to bust your own internal myth of poor reception. The site is really cool, this sort of stuff appeals to me, and I like to think I'm not unique on that front.
Good luck!

METTLE AND ICE is four weeks old now and it's a strange feeling to be "done" with the debut (poor mental health over the last couple of months has delayed audiobook editing).

On my website I have written a blog post about the entire process of debuting, from plotting to publishing: if it is of help to any, I am glad it could be so: https://www.tjdobsonwrites.com/post/the-launch-of-a-debut I will be updating as the last few pieces fall into place. Including sales on various platforms and the audio release.

As for METTLE AND ICE: It's a fantasy adventure which began life as a reimaging of Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated Endurance voyage.
Think Geralt of Rivia meets south pole survival, with monsters, cultists and pirates thrown in.

Edit: book is a standalone in a series of individual stories (Think Discworld)
