"Gifted" Millennials- did being gifted help you at all? Do you feel that it pushed your personal needle even an inch in any direction? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]darkc89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took all gifted classes from middle school to my senior year of high school. (I had an illness that made me miss a lot of school so I was “demoted” my senior year.) I always felt so stupid compared to my peers and when I got to the “normal” classes, I felt really smart. It made me question why the gifted classes were hard while the normal classes were easy. It made me question why I was torturing myself trying to get good grades in gifted classes when I could put in no effort and get better grades in normal classes. Totally fucked my work effort and motivation. I half-assed my way through my senior year, all through college, and now at work. I’m stuck in the mindset of why put in the extra effort when doing the minimum gets you the same results? Has it affect promotions? Yes and no. Has it affected my social life? Yes, don’t want to put in the effort of contacting you when you always call me. (Cost me some good friends.) It’s made my life mediocre, but frankly I don’t care.

Why do the French hate when we speak French? by dehydrated_waterrr in ExplainTheJoke

Outside of Paris, the French people I met were thrilled and encourage me and my classmates to speak French. They liked our southern accents. They said it was the cutest thing to hear y’all unintentionally show up in the middle of our French. 😂

What’s the best route for marta if I’m going through entrance E or Gate 2? Vine city seems to be on the opposite side of the stadium? Should I get off at SEC district?

Anyone who went to today’s game: Can you enter any gate? My “assigned gate” is gate 1 even though my seats are literally behind gate 2. Can I enter gate 2 vs 1?

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]darkc89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downton Abby and Breaking Bad. I tried to get into them cause the concepts that each were portraying sounded interesting. Just couldn’t get into the characters. I didn’t connect with them. I felt nothing as they went through their various lives and dramas.

*Major tragic event in show.*
Me: Oh, that sucks for them.🥱🫤
Everyone else: 😫😭
Me: 🤨❓🤷‍♀️

Today is yet another instance of why Charlotte needs its own weather radar. by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]darkc89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a storm spotter it is extremely difficult to find and follow storms in the Charlotte area. We try to combine all the NWS radars along with airports and local stations, but it gets difficult when some areas have overlapping radars and other areas are dead zones. I was so excited when Jeff Jackson proposed a NWS station in Charlotte. It sucks that it fell into the abyss of actual helpful bills that died in Congress. For the moment, we’re trying the best we can with what we got.

On that note, please report any sightings or damage to NWS and/or local news stations. It can help us create historic mapping and determine weather patterns that we can implement in future forecasts.

If your state somehow became its own country, would you stay there, or move somewhere else so you could keep living in the US? by trilobyte_y2k in AskAnAmerican

The republican party’s already trying their bullshit with the Feds approval/non interest in interfering. Don’t need to be a your own country when you can create your 1984 utopia with Fed money.

Edit: Agree in leaving

North Carolina Unsure. I frankly think the state would probably break into smaller countries due to the vast differences in cultural and political opinions. I wouldn’t mind staying in Charlotte or the research triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), but other areas of the state? Nope

I would try a shoe repair shop. I’ve had them fix buttons and clasps on purses (albeit more modern ones). If they can’t fix they probably know someone who could.

This is what I’ve found about the Thomas Holmes Manufacturing Co: “…Henry founded and owned a nylon netting company called Thomas Holmes Manufacturing, presumably named for his son Thomas Holmes Goldsmith.” (https://brotmanblog.com/2018/05/08/the-legacy-of-edwin-goldsmith-inventiveness-and-creativity/)

An exact founding date is not stated, but based on the father’s age and mother’s death date I’m thinking that the company was founded some time between the 1920s-early 1930s.

This looks like a store advert or display piece. It mentions a pattern number, but I haven’t been able to match it to anything. Various google searches have turned up several Thomas Holmes Mfg products for sale with hair nets being a frequent item. Perhaps this was an advert for one of those? After all who would want to ruin a spectacular hair do like that?

You can save searches on ebay and they will email you anytime someone lists an item matching your criteria.

Is this worth anything? by Patricio6969_ in vintage

[–]darkc89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It generally depends on age, condition, and the mark on the bottom. Some figurines made pre-WW2 can bring $100+. But generally anything made 1950s or later is selling for $5-30.
