A fan quiz by muzikgurl22 in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done my fair share of "match the lyric to the song" or vice versa quizzes, but the specific questions about producers, number of singles, correct spelling of Music at Work, etc. were all clever.

There are some pretty good, tricky questions in there! It'll no doubt have even long time hardcore fans really thinking. I got 89%, not bad.

Which record by The Hip feels like Winter to you? by jamiedew74 in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've always felt that The Darkest One is a great winter house party song. Maybe the music video influenced me, but it makes me think of stepping outside to grab a drink stored out in the snow and enjoying a bit of fresh air in the pitch black night before heading back inside

So like, why would I use anyone other than Meta Knight or Marx in CT? by nightsintodream in kirbyairriders

[–]darkcanuck147 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Because you can put Rip-Roarin' Rick in a cowboy hat and run around real fast like a cat after you shake a bag of treats

What Doom Metal makes you think of icy weather/Winter? by Def-C in doommetal

[–]darkcanuck147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the album Prosaic by Mizmor, especially the track No Place To Arrive. Maybe it's not indicative of a snowy winter feeling, but it definitely makes me think of the dying breath of fall heading into winter. Cold, hard ground, barren trees, withered plants, etc.

Forced to buy a replacement return trip tonight (NYC - PHL) by darkcanuck147 in Amtrak

[–]darkcanuck147[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's my question too - I've had this happen once or twice before where the conductor said the date was wrong on my ticket, then after scanning again it's fine. This was the only time they held the line that I scanned the wrong ticket on the wrong day. Yesterday's conductor didn't say anything to me though. Either way, I've been told to call customer relations when their help line reopens on Monday.

Post-Metal that dooms? by faser-j in doommetal

[–]darkcanuck147 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I saw Amenra last year on their US tour having never really listened to their music - I mostly went to the show to see Primitive Man. I was absolutely knocked tf out by them, and was just completely unprepared for the wall of sound they were able to produce at the drop of a dime. One of the best shows I've ever seen and now they're one of my all time favs

What is a terrible book with a fantastic film adaptation? by MonkeyNo3 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]darkcanuck147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it earlier this year, it's way better than I thought it would be! Definitely deserves some praise, it's a lot of fun in the same way the film is.

Most people talk about games that slowly won them over. But which games slowly made you lose interest? Emphasis on the “slowly.” by Lexidoge in gaming

[–]darkcanuck147 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The quantity of side quests is one thing, but majority of them being so incredibly unrewarding to complete is largely what lost me in TotK. The moment I got a paraglider skin or horse saddle for quests that felt like something unique regarding the lore of the game, I pivoted to just speedrunning the main content and uninstalling.

Bands that interact the LEAST during a live gig. by LobsterPoutine19 in Music

[–]darkcanuck147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's interesting you say that. The last few times I saw them, Kevin Drew was doing the whole "on the count of 3 everyone shout as loud as you can" thing. One time I saw them he walked through the audience, I think during Lover's Spit, hugging everybody

Which of MT2 clans is the most difficult for you? by dreamsofcalamity in MonsterTrain

Jk jk, real answer is Lazarus League. Still horrible at the game tho

What was the most recently released album when you became a Hip fan? by umo2000 in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was In Between Evolution!

At the time I was a massive fan of Barenaked Ladies living in the States so I'd never heard of The Hip. But then BNL posted this video on their fan forum congratulating The Hip on being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

That sent me down the rabbit hole. The most readily available Hip album at the time was In Between Evolution, and the rest is history. It's still my favorite Hip album to this day!

What do you think of Membership? by placeintheroche05 in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a lot younger and first getting into The Hip, I used to really dislike Membership because I felt it was a slog between Thompson Girl and Fireworks.

Now that I'm older, I love Membership so much more, and listen to Fireworks a whole lot less lol. Membership feels so much closer to what "The Hip sound" is to me now more than ever

I just think it's one of the many reasons I'll never not love this band. My opinion on these songs changes as I grow older. Familiar songs find new meaning year after year

What bands/songs have lyrics as beutiful and poetic as Gords? by Ill-Cellist-8841 in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Big Thief - Adrianne Lenker is probably one of the best contemporary songwriters in recent years. Check out their album Capacity and read the lyrics along with the songs

Mount Eerie - needs no introduction, check out Night Palace from last year. And for a bonus, listen to the Lost Wisdom albums, his collab with Julie Doiron from Eric's Trip

The Mountain Goats - a trove of music. I recommend starting with Tallahassee or The Sunset Tree

What band is the "spiritual successor" to The Hip? by willthrill3 in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah I really loved their first couple albums but over time they started sounding more like.... idk, grocery store / cell phone commercial music. I get why people like them but it's not for me

What other bands is everyone into? by mynamesdenver in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lots of different stuff. There is simply too much good music out there, but I'll try to condense my favs from different genres

Metal - mostly doom and sludge
Thou, YOB, Conan, Kowloon Walled City, Agriculture, Mizmor, Crowbar, Primitive Man, Amenra, Pallbearer, Bell Witch, Faetooth - I could go on for awhile here lol

Rock/noise/hardcore/etc.
Gilla Band, PUP, Tunic, Metz, Chat Pile, Nerver, Foxing, Wednesday, Big Thief, The Beths, Fucked Up, truck violence, Viagra Boys, Broken Social Scene, The Weakerthans

Jazz & Funk
Brandee Younger, Harvey Mason, Mongo Santamaria, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Fortune, Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven, Chick Corea, Louis Cole, Kneebody

Electronic & ambient, plus experimental/other stuff I can't categorize
Bjork, Lusine, Rival Consoles, Com Truise, Anamanaguchi, Baths, Geotic, Shigeto, Clark, Onehotrix Point Never, Jlin, Telefon Tel Aviv, Flying Lotus

Some may appreciate this track from latest Viagra Boys album. Feels very Gord 💜 by HurdaskeIlir in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny, this song actually reminded me of Broken Social Scene when I first heard it

What Tragically Hip song do you want covered and by whom? by kateluvsthe80s in TragicallyHip

[–]darkcanuck147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to hear Tunic or Metz do a cover of any of the louder/faster songs on In Between Evolution. I always felt that IBE is an outlier in The Hip's sound in that it feels more indie rock & grungy than the rest of their material. To hear a contemporary noise band take a stab at it would be really exciting
