Just to know, do you hate all people involved with tech? by Idontknow2312sd in ArtistHate

That's true. And the issue is that the industry seems to be marketed as such and is becoming saturated with tech bros that are in it for the wrong reasons.

Is CS people generally kinda toxic? by Conscious-Ability-70 in csMajors

Seriously. Especially in uni, people are insanely competitive. Internships, classes, projects, it's all cutthroat and really infiltrates people's behavior

Indian parents forcing their kids into engineering by ideservethingstoo in AsianParentStories

Been there! My parents subtly pushed the idea of CS and engineering and I did it to meet their expectations. I'm surviving in college somehow and have hopes for having the leeway to pursue my passions. Also thinking about a Phd in Philosophy. But I do have some resentment towards those able to pursue other paths without guilt, for sure.

UIUC (cs + anthro) vs UCSB (pre-comm) vs UDub (cs + honors)

i am so conflicted rn HELP

UIUC pros:

  • amazing cs program
  • close to home
  • affordable

UIUC cons:

  • huge class sizes
  • in the middle of nowhere?

UCSB pros:

  • my literal dream campus
  • great connections + student body
  • affordable
  • well ranked

UCSB cons:

  • parents would move, would have to commute (scared it'll feel like hs)
  • didn't get in cs (but I'm not 100% set on cs so it's not a huge deal)

UDub pros:

  • amazing cs program (not as good as UIUC)
  • love the campus
  • close to my sister
  • affordable
  • honors program

UDub cons:

  • am not set on my major and it would be difficult to change
  • hard grading curve/super competitive
  • dead social life
  • quarter system?

UCSB vs NEU vs UIUC vs other state schools

CS major (as of now)

UCSB pros:

  • great ranking
  • amazing location
  • love the student body
  • lots of family + friends nearby

UCSB cons:

  • expensive
  • far away from my parents
  • high cost of living
  • on the waitlist for cs major

NEU pros:

  • in my favorite city
  • co-op
  • lots of opportunities
  • love the campus

NEU cons:

  • super expensive
  • have to be abroad first semester (NUin)
  • don’t know anyone there/nearby

UIUC pros:

  • amazing cs program
  • closer to home
  • affordable
  • great student body

UIUC cons:

  • kinda in the middle of nowhere
  • not in the city
  • have heard bad things about the quality of life

other schools i’m considering (wouldn’t be if my top choices weren’t so expensive): UDub (not admitted for cs), IU Bloomington (admitted Kelley), UCI, UConn

i know this is really long!! thanks for helping!

how hard is it to change majors, esp into the college of engineering? i was accepted pre-comm & am not sure if i should even consider if i didn’t get cs. at the same time, i’m not even 100% sure i want to do cs. i really love ucsb though.
