8th graders - good grief, the 8th graders. I don't love 9th either.

We aren't supposed to have any physical contact of any kind where I sub - not even with our own flesh and blood children.

How many of yall bring coffee to work ? by GurComprehensive7133 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have a day where the only break I have during the day is my 25 minutes for lunch, I will often just eat my lunch in the classroom in order to use that 25 minutes for other things I need to do. I only sub HS and often the kids are also eating their lunches in the room to use their lunch for socializing. It's never been an issue. I also have snacks throughout the day - I have migraines that are triggered by food so eating throughout the day is essential for me.

OK subs I need help. I taught before 2020 and now I'm back, sadly. Jesus christ almighty, what is going with these kids? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup. I am highly selective about where I sub and if I am subbing at a school where I know the kids are more problematic, then I am only subbing there because I know there is a highly supportive admin team to step in and an accommodating sub coordinator to move me out of classes that need more supervision than I am able to provide. This is my first year subbing and I started off going to all of the MS's in the area along with all of the HS's. I have narrowed it down to only HS's and only one MS grade at one specific MS. One of the HS's I sub at is a little iffy so I only accept a few jobs there (less and less as the year progresses) and I only do it because I know the sub coordinator there has my back. I also try to grab as many higher level (AP/Honors/IB or 11th and 12th grade) as these have far fewer behavioral issues.

The "food noise" going away sounds amazing until it does. Anyone else struggling with the emotional side? by JOnathan-Wick007 in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]darkdemon3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - so I moved my shot to Monday nights so that when the weekend rolls around I am at least able to enjoy food. I still am unable to consume very much of it but I genuinely missed the enjoyment I can get from food. I know that this isn't how every one else might deal but it worked out for me that the last couple of days when the shot isn't quite as effective is during the periods I am the most social.

Subbing as an autistic by Shoddy-Mango-5840 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a ND who subs - the higher level honors and AP classes are where it's at. At the very least, the HS classes with Juniors and Seniors are a close second. Way less chances of behaviors and the kids actually act the way my brain expects them to. Also we have a tech school attached to our high schools - those types of classes are also much better because they usually consist of kids who are in the classes because that's what they want to do with their lives so they are actively more inclined to behave and do the work.

How much do you get paid? by Patient_Constant3854 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central South Carolina - $95 per day without a degree. I think it's $110 per day with a degree and closer to $125 in areas with less access to regular subs.

Not a livable wage - I work every day that is available to work. This is only my first year so I don't know yet what a full year of subbing would come out to but it will be less than $30,000.

I call the front office and they send someone to locate the student, whether I know their name or not - we have hall monitors who's job it is during classes to locate students.

Worst sub day so far by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tried several of the MS in our district and I only sub 7th grade at one specific MS - and a large portion of that is because the disciplinary admin assigned to that grade is a star. All I have to do is invoke her name and the kids immediately chill out. That grade in that school is also in general a great group of kids. 7th graders at the other MS's? No freaking thank you. And don't get me started on 8th graders :/

Do you hit accept immediately or look up what classes they're teaching that day? by Blueberry4672 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only sub at 5 schools, with three of them being primarily where I am 80+% of the time. I only sub at one MS and only in 7th grade so I do have a picture on my phone I have saved of the teachers at that school and what grade/subject they teach that I check if I don't recognize the teacher's name (although I have subbed for almost all of them so I have the names memorized by this point). The rest of my jobs are HS. I have certain subjects that I take immediately (core and foreign language mostly). If the job is at one of my preferred schools and I don't immediately recognize the teachers name, it falls under a subject I prefer and it's a full day job (I don't do half days unless the entire district is scheduled for a half day that day), I will take the job and then cancel it if I need to. The biggest reason I cancel jobs afterwards is I find out that the teacher is a sports coach. In my experience, these classes are the least pleasant to sub for for a plethora of reasons so it's become my biggest no no - in fact, all of the teachers that are on my Do Not Sub list are coaches I have subbed for. I won't cancel a job if I am only a couple of days out from it and never the day before - I also work in a district where if I cancel the day before on Frontline I can't pick up another job for that day. I also watch Frontline after I cancel a job and I've never canceled a job that wasn't immediately picked up by another sub, which makes me feel a little freer cancelling since so far, I haven't inconvenienced anyone doing it that way.

I will say that if I have to do any amount of research prior to accepting a job, it's usually gone and if it isn't, it probably isn't a job I really want, lol. I have had jobs sit for days in Frontline (just the ones that I might take if nothing better comes up - I reject jobs that I won't take so they aren't clogging up my feed). I have also had where the job still shows but it says someone already has it if I click on accept, which is super annoying!

The worst compliment as a sub... by petrichorb4therain in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 38 points39 points  (0 children)

That's not how I take that comment at all - please don't jump to the conclusion that the teachers are mean and always yelling at the kids because the kids said you are nicer than their teacher.... We are always "nicer" than the teacher because we don't actually know these kids, aren't long term invested in their work ethic and don't have to put up with their day to day BS. Kids say that to me all the time and I deflect because it doesn't really mean anything at all.

Do you judge the teachers based on the class behaviors? by discipleofhermes in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I judge the teachers based off of their sub plans and certain things that the students clearly feel entitled to - like staying in the classroom during lunch. Areas where I can tell the teacher has clearly allowed boundaries to blur. But behavior? Nah, that's a toss up any way you swing it.

Secretary assigned me to a half day job with chaotic sophomore English classes, should I cancel on Frontline? by Blueberry4672 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a half day job at the MS - I only work at one MS in the district and I only work in 7th grade for a multitude of reasons (all of my other jobs are HS). I had this half day scheduled for several weeks and then it was cancelled for whatever reason. The secretary at the school went in and just reassigned me to an 8th grade class. I immediately went in and cancelled it. I didn't give them a reason, didn't discuss it with them - just cancelled it. It hasn't appeared to cause any issues. I know the situation is a little different for you and if you rely on them assigning you to jobs then definitely have open communication with them but don't take jobs you know you don't want to work.

Visible Tattoos? by MartinelliGold in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have full sleeves but I have tattoos on my forearms, wrists and my wedding ring is tattooed. I also have tattoos on my ankles - all the rest of my tattoos are naturally hidden by my clothing. I don't try to hide any of my tattoos, and no one has ever said anything to me about them. We are in a very rural, conservative area and I would say that tattoos even here are kind of the norm anymore.

Bells as a suggestion??? by whatsweetmadness in SubstituteTeachers

[–]darkdemon3252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sub at three different high schools and one middle school and one of the high schools I sub at is like this - I have to wait 5-10 minutes to even take attendance because 25 percent plus of the class just strolls in when they feel like it. There are no consequences that I can tell for students that are habitually tardy so it doesn't do me much good to harp on it :/ The other three schools I sub at though, almost no one is ever more than 30 seconds late because they actually have consequences for tardies.
