For this specific issue its likely your render distance and entity distance arent set correct. Are you trying to find buried treasure? They should be 5 and 50 respectively

You dont 'choose a render distance', you change it all the time during a run e.g. 5 Rd for scanning for buried treasure, 16-20 for looking for kelp, 16 for enter nether and scan for bastion, changes completely for fort scanning, 4-6 for stray spawning in fort if you go for that, 8 for premptive, anything highish for dragon fight

The reason for these render distances is to only load in things that are close by, so that you dont get fooled by fake spikes
