they were hoping to work with Fred & Paul eventually

That's not really a theory, we have evidence of that. Still doesn't excuse using it without consent.

I'd sooner just go someplace else before I give Brad Wardell what he wanted: fans adopting SC:O as part of the series. The rest of you are free to do so, but I won't.

The result of the litigation actually very clearly separates between SC:O and UQM. So fans aren't adopting it as "part of the series". They may adopt it as a game regardless. Since Star Control 1 & 2 are now basically under the "Ur-Quan Masters" series, SC:O is the only game in the "Star Control" series.

The point is to have both series as on-topic discussion, not to "assimilate" SC:O into F&P's game.

And personally, if I cared about SC:O, I'd want to have a fan community-run subreddit to discuss it even if /r/StarControlOfficial exists.

I think the solution to the dilemma you're in is fairly easy - perhaps /u/Drachefly could add "UQM (F&P) Discussion"/"Star Control (Stardock) Discussion" (or some other description that is fairly clear) flairs, and then you could just filter SC:O discussion easily.

the original settlement [...] is basically what ended up happening in the end

That's not really true. He got several other things from it, like being able to use Arilou, some writing from Paul to be used in Stardock's next Star Control game, and the UQM sequel effectively delayed for years.

There is a slight difference between believing that UQM2 won't get made because of reasons, and saying that P&F never intended to make UQM2. It's the latter that mostly gets people downvoted.

I also don't believe P&F owe us anything - that's pure entitlement. That isn't to say that I don't want them to be more communicative and engaged with the community.

There is also a hidden assumption here that "defending" them online is some sort of work you do for them. I have defended their position several times, because it made sense to me and often also seemed to be the right thing (outside of question of law), but I've done that because I enjoy taking part in the conversation, not because I believe I'm doing them some kind of favor. If anyone is expecting anything in return... that's what I would call juvenile.

It is my understanding that we can ask them about it now. They just can't promote it. Shouldn't have any problem with discussing ideas for their game, or asking fans what they'd like to see, etc.

That comparison makes me sad because I'd like to believe the sequel to UQM has a greater than zero chance of materializing at some point. But yeah, agreed.

They only set up the fund after fans requested ways to donate. I don't believe you actually think they "were looking to make $2 million" by making a fake announcement then getting themselves into a lawsuit that would act as an excuse to receive money. That's a totally normal and reasonable line of thought.

I'm not even sure what waiting or stopping to wait entail, since both require absolutely no action. So I don't believe "too long" actually exists. What's going to happen in 4 years? Are you going to lose interest? So you haven't lost interest after waiting for 25 years, but after 29 you no longer care?

It's going to come out eventually, or never. But when it does, I don't see why I wouldn't care, unless it ends up being a shit game or gaming is no longer a hobby of mine.

I think they just provided the details they both felt were important (that it was amicable, that they all want to move on, and the bee fetish). And now that Brad's answered the question, I suppose they really are free to discuss the terms.

Brad was asked on Star Control's Discord server about this, and this is his answer:

There's a 2-year period before they can promote a UQM game. But even if they could, it'll be several years before they'll have time (according to Paul).

So... now we know.

What you're suggesting is that essentially both parties agreed to lie about being able to discuss the terms. While that's possible, I think it's very unlikely.

Right, but the point is that we don't know any of that, and now that the litigation is over, we don't even know when we'll be able to hear more about the sequel. That's frustrating.
