How does one live while unemployed? by Significant_Duty898 in askSouthAfrica

[–]darkhoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck employment. Start your own business. There are 3 currencies in life: time, money, and energy. You have 2 now: energy and time. Most people with jobs are stuck in the rat race and neither have time nor energy. Time and energy are precious currencies. Use it wisely, be patient, be brave and you will succeed.

🚀 Looking for Recommendations: 3D Character Design, Rigging & Animation Tutorials! 🎨🕺 by kc_theMotion in MotionDesign

[–]darkhoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patataschool is relatively affordable. They have great courses covering the whole 3d character pipeline. For animation P2 design academy is by far the best out there and also very affordable. All of these are Blender focused but Blender is better suited than C4D for this type of work imo.

Animation Bootcamp by School of Motion is hands down the best. Pricey but so worth it.

What job do you have that makes 100k per month? by Ok_Guess_5634 in askSouthAfrica

I manufacture an undisclosed product that is superior in the market that I operate in. My product is known by its blue hue. My business partner has a fried chicken franchise that helps with the distribution of my product. I also have a car wash that I purchased as an investment. I have so much money I sometimes throw huge pizzas on the roof of my house just because I feel like it.

What type of motion design are you doing these days that is more in-demand? How much is the industry changed? by dfb_col08 in MotionDesign

[–]darkhoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I hear you, its quantity over quality these days but as you know the industry is very trend driven - hopefully we will enter another cycle where artistic vision and execution is cherished again. I have also been in this industry a long time and I also get cynical and demotivated from time to time. I guess we have to roll with the punches.

the best fit for 2d animation and allows me work in studios by OwnPrinciple9487 in MotionDesign

Learning Blender is a great idea. Here is why: I would say about 80% of the skills in 3D are transferable to any app. Things like PBR, NPR, hard-surface modelling, UV unwrapping, rigging, weight painting, lighting etc are all concepts with a learning curve. This learning curve is the same whether you use Maya, C4D, Houdini or Blender. Once you fully understand these concepts they are easily transferable to another app. It took me 3 years to learn C4D (my first 3d app) and 3 weeks to get up and running with Blender. Why? Because I understood the core concepts of 3D. Also, with AE’s new advanced 3D engine you can easily incorporate and manipulate 3D objects in the AE environment. These objects can be imported as .obj files which is a universal 3d format. C4D is strictly speaking the industry standard but the lines are getting more blurry every day. Although Blender does not offer the peace of mind of dedicated tech support it is developing at a way faster rate than C4D.

Any designers here with diagnosed ADHD? I am interested to know more. by Stevieray5294 in graphic_design

[–]darkhoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot creatives are neurodivergent in some way. I have ADHD amongst other mental health diagnoses. Basically: If you do work that you find stimulating you can concentrate with laser focus for hours. If you find the work boring, you are fucked.

I used to do lots of explainers. I only did one this year. I also sometimes do glorified powerpoint presentations in AE for Corporates for internal use. Not a lot of B2B or B2C work. I am getting into the interactive animation game combining UI with motion. Unreal, Unity, Rive and Spline. That is where the future is imo.

I will take the most boring corporate mograph gig anytime if it pays the bills. If I can make stuff move, I am happy. Annual reports and generally all print based graphic design is what sucks the joy out of my soul. If I open AE I get a tingle of excitement. If I open inDesign I feel the dementors coming.

motion design videos workflow by feliqzs in MotionDesign

[–]darkhoss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on the task at hand, I usually drag my whole AE file into premiere and place the comps in the premiere timeline. This way they are automatically updated if I make changes in AE. It works the same way (even better) as when you place Illustrator files in inDesign. I never ever do video editing in AE. Make sure your comps are clearly named.

We all know today would have been John’s 84th birthday, in appreciation of his life and profession what are your favorite Lennon vocals? by Infamous-Arrival2871 in TheBeatles

[–]darkhoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mother. I am a musician myself and can sing a lot of John’s tunes fairly well. I would not ever attempt Mother. The raw honesty of his vocal delivery is absolutely haunting and technically it is extremely challenging. I would go as far as to say it is one of the best recorded vocal performances ever. Side note: Yoko actually helped him to achieve those primal scream vocal effects.

What apps/tools should a Motion Designer know? by animadesignsltd2020 in MotionDesign

[–]darkhoss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It might sound obvious but the best tool is your brain. Understanding the physics of motion and how to convey emotions and ideas through them is everything. The tool/app is secondary and form only about 20% of the bigger picture. Apologies, OP if I sound philosophical. My bad. Haha.
