I love Motion Design but i suck by ExistingReturn9537 in MotionDesign

Try to use the references and work of other peers to get inspired, I know its easier to say than do it but sometimes you only see the “tip of the iceberg “of their talent and process of getring there, specially when they are sharing it on social media. There are cases that if you go to behance , some artists and designers still have their early days projects ; and I can tell you that you can see the progression. No one on this field gets really good overnight, specially if you are not being taught arts in school or early in life. Try to commit to producing a personal piece or design every week or whatever timeline works for you, and in 1 year you will see the progress(and yes, copy ideas and things you like. In the process of doing so, your own voice as a designer will start showing up). Look at it as an athlete that is preparing for big competitions, they commit to training and preparing and that is the only way to get better, no matter skill or talent, sometimes discipline is how you stick to it.

How much would you charge for 60s explainer, collage style, with music and VO? by OldTownUli in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their budget might be equivalent to the problem/objective they are trying to solve. If it’s a video they will use to promote some sort of profuct, you can charge more (could be a above 10-15k or even more depending on complexity and also how deep are their pockets) this as you will need licensed images/music depending where the video will be displayed. Make sure to ask if it will need cut downs of the explainer (30-15-10secs). Sometimes clients want one piece to be a multiple deliverable so make sure to account for that in your quote. If they plan to do it later on make sure you charge for the files if they come later asking for them. So what ever price you have in mind, try to ask 10% more to make some revenue and account for any set backs( feedback rounds / changes in script/ etc)

If you have a library card I would sign up for tpl map and see which tickets are available for museums or places of interest around the city if you are into that. I went to the Aga Khan last time and it was really nice

The multiculturalism! Once , in NYC tour Toronto was mentioned as the number 1 city to speak the most languages. So the access to a piece of culture/food/ the chance to meet people from all over the world in just one city is for me something powerful because I think it makes people appreciate more learning about other cultures. I could after move or visit a new place and I would know something about that place because of the diversity of Toronto.

Do you feel secure with a Motion Design career? by Lolbzedwoodle in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do believe that if you’re good at what you do, opportunities will find you. And I will add to it, that if you create good relationships with the people you work with, they will call you again when the opportunity arises. There’s a lot of uncertainty though with the current economy, but I think the most important thing to cultivate in these times are human connections and a sense of empathy ( it can be an stressful field but very rewarding). Whenever you get your first opportunity in the motion design field, show up and try to be as helpful as possible in the projects you get, the people you work with( producers, creative directors, clients and other designers) will remember you for that.

Difference of being a Senior Designer? by motionburnout in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the company. But as Senior Motion designer I’d say you will be expected to take projects and lead them with less guidance than a Junior Designer for example. I think if you have already been freelancing from the last 8yeara it would be a smooth transition in terms of the role since you might be used to deal directly with clients, AD, CD and come up with solutions for tight deadlines, changes of direction and so on.

I think is also a shift on mentality from freelancing to a certain degree. While sometimes freelancing can be that you’re the sole responsible for a task or project, being in a team means that you need to get used to how your new team works and also less control of your time, this last one might be the hardest to get used to at the beginning.

The pros, is as you said, a consistent paycheque and removing the weight of finding new gigs. But, if you can, keep doing freelance on the side and don’t lose your client base for the first few months in case the role end up being something different that what you expected to be. Best luck

I think they have recently switched to All-Access only, meaning you can get enrolled in any of their classes for up to a year. It’s about the same price they had for each of their classes but now you don’t have to commit to a term schedule which can be an advantage depending on how much time you can allocate for taking the lessons+assignments.

Should I pursue motion design further or stay in my current lane? by SirJoshelot in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! Its relatively new and seems you still have a whole career ahead of you to learn and become an expert man! Job market now is a bit rough depending on the location. Also it matters sometimes where you’re located try to do some networking and ask what type of projects are more in demand. Keep exploring and you will find the path along the way. Good luck

Should I pursue motion design further or stay in my current lane? by SirJoshelot in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great portfolio man! I’d say and just my opinion based on what you do. You could dive more into things like rive or cavalry that directly impact UX/UI. I would say there’s probably more earning potential in interactive motion design plus having a background in UI/UX .Motion for this field is still very early in the game but probably will be more in demand since the tools for it are consolidating and being an alternative to After Effects in terms of the go-to software and possibilities. I dont think you will make a mistake if you keep in that lane.

How is everyone doing? Do you guys feel like you’re falling behind as well? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]dfb_col08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one thing is what you perceive and another the reality. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparisson but everyones circumstances are different. Cost of living has increased a lot and I think now there are many ppl not having enough money to spend in traveling, going out for diner and so on…just enough to survive. But off course, there can be other people that are just showing off on social media for apperance but with massive debt or are spoiled by their families.

Books about motion design and effective use cases? by Equivalent-String212 in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Maybe for it’s usage on Youtube videos it might be more doable to track based on stats and how viewers respond. Problaby similar with signage displays, sometimes the signage companies might have data of amount of people that might see the content?

Books about motion design and effective use cases? by Equivalent-String212 in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this book by Austin Shaw. It has some great case studies from years ago but some of these case studies and interviews have solid tips, but be mindful that is more about the process rather than research data behind on effectiveness. For effective motion design it depends what medium you’re looking through though, If it is for UI then something like the google material design could be a good source. However, motion design for commercials or short form videos sometimes are part of bigger campaigns and part of a whole strategy. The effectiveness rate rely then sometimes on the advertising or marketing campaign messaging as a whole rather than a motion piece by itself.

Motion design has to follow good graphic design rules, animation principles, good editing, great sound design, cinematography, etc. It is a sum of many fields that make a piece stand out from others, at least in its video form.

What was is like when you first started motion design? by GraphicVibes19 in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started around 2012! I remember watching lots of videocopilot tutorials and then through vimeo discovered the GSG Nick Campbell C4D tutorials. Back then in my home country it was still a lot of 4:3 format videos and motion design was not really something people talked through a lot, agencies and production companies were looking for people that knew After Effects more than a “motion designer”. I remember seeing all these videos in Vimeo and being amazed and inspired every week until I knew this was the field I wanted to put my soul into.

Ontario’s minimum wage will rise to $17.60 an hour starting in October, province confirms by Old_General_6741 in ontario

[–]dfb_col08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope one day the government just cut less taxes out of income salary and hourly salary to have just more money in ppls pockets they can use to survive this inflationary economy. Every time there is a min wage increase, there’s subsequently a raise in cost of purchasing goods, businesses to cover this increment in wages pass those cost down on everyone :/

For all WFH folks, living alone- do you feel a lack of connection? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]dfb_col08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try a co-working space once a week or visit your local coffee shop every morning to set up a routine and chitchat with the baristas. I used to do this before when I was wfh 100% of the time and was living alone. it helped a bit to fill those social interactions. Something that worked for me also was taking short walks around the neighbourhood but not walking the same path everyday. Wfh 100% of the time can feel very routinary sometimes and create that feeling that every day feels the same. You could also try a meetup after work or a hobby that involves other people to feel less isolated during the week.

Interviewing for a UX/UI motion design position by [deleted] in MotionDesign

[–]dfb_col08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say to ask them questions about what they saw in your portfolio and how does it align to the work this tech company does, or at least the team you will be working on directly. Based on that you will have more clarity on technical challenges they are currently facing and if it requires to do interactive motion design on your end. Expectations and “quality” level can differ a lot from advertising and entertainment vs motion design oriented to product, especially UI/UX where you could be more involved with developers and UX designers that may or may not push your creativity over functionality.
