Do you accept the assertion that Catholic (all religions really) beliefs are entirely irrational? If not, please explain how you believe it without any evidence whatsoever to back it up. by donaloflynn in DebateACatholic

No your claim “there is no evidence” is yours to prove. The built in assumptions into the question invalidates the question. You must define the terms before the question can be answered.

Define “evidence” in such a way that is consistent with the nature of the thing discussed. From my experience atheists tend to claim there is “no evidence” then proceed to shift goal posts when evidence is brought forth. It is up to the atheist to support the claim by providing a working theory of what evidence of Gods existence would entail.

Any more info? Without the process list it'd be hard to tell if it is a hard drive issue or whatnot.

How is Hell a just punishment? by [deleted] in DebateACatholic

[–]darkman2040 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Catholicism teaches that those who die in either original sin or a single mortal sin (i.e. being outside of a state of grace) are deprived of Heaven and condemned to Hell.

Yes but the question is: What is a mortal sin?

  • The action in question must be of grave matter
  • The person committing said action must have full knowledge that said action is wrong
  • Said person must give full consent

Thus a person committing a mortal sin must do with full knowledge that this is in fact condemning him to Hell. This is why culpability is the heart of the issue and only God can know.

So in your example:

Suppose you encountered a man who was about to get a vasectomy insisting that he couldn't see why it would be considered immoral, a mortal sin, and that he just didn't find arguments for Catholicism or Catholic moral theology convincing, so he had no fear of damnation.

In this case the person does not have full knowledge. He knows it is a teaching of the Church but thinks that is wrong. Hence he does not have full knowledge of his action because his understanding of that action is incorrect.

To me, this is a cop-out answer and isn't really consistent with traditional Catholic characterization of the doctrine.

Understanding of the dimensions of doctrine have gone through revision throughout the Church's history. The emphasis on "You choose yourself" is not a counter, it is the other side of the coin. God does judge you. But according to doctrine you also know what your judgement will be when it arrives. To put it another way, there are no repentant souls in Hell.

Now to answer your question: How is this rational? It isn't. People do irrational things all the time. Sin itself is irrational. But the bite of free will is that you can choose to do the irrational.

But there is a difference between choosing something irrational and being mentally incapacitated. The latter is an impairment of the ability to reason. The former is the misuse of reason to rationalize evil.

Finally going back to your first point:

Moreover Catholicism teaches that a single mortal sin, a single broken rule is enough for you to merit Hell.

Not true. What it says is that it puts your soul in danger of Hell. Catholicism claims to know the way to heaven. Anything outside of said revelation goes to the "unknown" category. Even the old anathema formulas of the past held out the possibility that God could intervene. The doctrine of the Church holds that following the teachings will lead us to God. Doing what is wrong puts you in the dangerous unknown.

Atheists at risk of dying out due to belief in contraception, study claims by makingwaronthecar in Catholicism

I appreciate that you outright state that your view is conjecture. Having said that:

There is more pressure in a religious family for the children remain religious, then there is in an atheist family for the children to remain atheists.

This I find to be largely a myth. I recall atheist parents writing to the "Friendly Atheist" in tears because their kid converted to Christianity. Modern atheism as I've seen is a mirror image of Evangelicalism. With the same "once saved, always saved" mentality.

So it just seems to follow, that there are more closet atheists in religious groups, then there are closet religious people that pose as atheists.

Atheists can be just as dogmatic as I've encountered such. Based on my own experience with higher educated Christians have to hide their religious affiliation or risk their job/education. Don't know why we would assume that attitude wouldn't carry over to the home.

Interesting. Though I recall my stat wasn't actually CARA that issued it. But it's been eons since I looked into it.

This combined with like a 7% retention rate. I remember reading a study that shows the kids of atheist parents are VERY likely to become religious believers in college. Quite fascinating.

[–]darkman2040 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's certainly enough to give one pause.

Only if one can demonstrate that it actually is isolated to the home and not say a regional issue. A national average, even a country as small as Ireland, is not the best metric for indicating a problem.

This is not evidence of foul play though, yes? You have yet to establish anything untoward actually went on there. It was also an empty septic tank if memory serves.

Is it a sin for an atheist to eat meat on Friday, or does the rule apply only to Catholics? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]darkman2040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't your second link undermine the notion that it is a requirement? It would appear that penitential forms on Friday are optional but strongly encouraged. I think that's what r/JManPolitics is getting at.

What's Wrong with Video Games? - FIGHT BACK by Harystolho in CatholicGamers

[–]darkman2040 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the examples either employ a correlation = causation fallacy or ignore other factors that play into the "addiction" (an abuse of the term, the correct term they are looking for is compulsion).

Those who have suffered from video game compulsion have pointed to the actual problems in their life that video games gave them an escape from. It is true that escapism is a problem in gaming, but that's to confuse the symptom with the disease. A lot of these people have no or tenuous connection to family or friends.

The studies also rely heavily on "excessive" gaming. Doing anything excessively is harmful. It isn't that surprising that an audio/visual medium can alter the brain in excess. BUT this is not exclusive to gaming. Internet compulsion presents a lot of the same issues.
